Hi there Taro .. 👍 Good Advice .. thank you 😊. Education in recognizing the onset of hypothermia is just as important as the prevention and treatment thereof. A story in that regard .. As a teenager in the '60's living in Durban, a sub-tropical Coastal City on the South African East Coast .. coming out of the water after a day's surfing in wet, windy 'Winter' Weather, we would often find ourselves barely able to speak .. lips blue .. shivering uncontrollably and with stiff muscles and joints. We could not afford 'wet suits' as protection against the rain and wind (some wore cotton Tshirts to 'keep warm' .. which actually aggravated the situation). We just accepted it as 'par for the course'. Fortunately, my pal Max's Uncle had a flat right on the Beach Front where we surfed so we had a place of refuge to retire to and warm up in. As the average daily Winter Temperature is about 20°C, one does not imagine that Hypothermia would be a problem. Thinking back .. Wisdom in Hindsite' .. we were suffering from Hypothermia and did not know it. We were just lucky. Take care .. stay safe .. Tommy

Thanks Taro, much appreciated 👍 it’s always good to revisit the basics of mountain safety and you reminded me of my instructors back in the 70’s when I was training for my Scottish Mountain Leadership Certificate in the Cairngorms 😂. Great overview and explanation. And a wonderful video in total - it is always such a joy to watch what perfection in terms of videography you created. That part about the neck remembered me my childhood. In those days it was kind of obligatory to wear a cap and a shawl during cold season. Nobody ever went out in wintertime without a shawl. Meanwhile I noticed that this habit became less common, so many people seem to even not own a shawl nowadays. On the other side, more people are now using bandanas - in my childhood nobody even knew that kind of stuff. ;-)

Thanks so much dear Robert, yes at our early days our parents hat a different view to our clothing, on the other hand we have not that strong winters anymore, but believe me, if it gets really cold again people will remember, alway got to hear from you👍 take care, Taro
@bangalorebobbel3 жыл бұрын
@@Taromovies yes in central Europe will be less cold in average but I heard winters might even become more strong there, not always but sometimes. I remember my last strong winter in Europe in 1984/85. We had minus 27 at my native place, my dad had to unfreeze the water pipe inside the house - luckily I was in my wife's place where we had only 24° minus. ;-) This was the last winter I have spent completely in Europe ... anyhow I am not such a big fan of extreme minus temperaturs ;-D But I guess many hypothermia deaths happen even in zeroplus temperatures, it doesn't need extreme cold weather and snow and ice. Means something in the range of single digit temperatures can also kill people, especially if they are homeless and have no shelter and are suffering from malnutrition etc. combined with bad luck or alcohol ...

Very well prepared video. Good information. But I miss an experience of hypothermia that I often experience. I cycle avery day with a velomobile. A fully enclosed bicycle. A recombent. So no wind direct on my body. My body heat also lingers around me in that shell. That is why I can and must cycle in the cold with little clothing. A T-shirt and short trousers and still I'm sweating at 0 degree outside temperture. Without feeling cold, hypothermia occurs after hours of cycling. Only when I get home and shower I'll start shivering. I still feel the cold after days. It's surley hypothermia. On the end of de ride I'm mostly only concentrating on stayng on the road and getting home. Eating and drinking is almost impossible in that stage. I don't feel like it and to much trouble. I'll keep the finger test in mind next time. So hypothermia can also accure while you feel warm and your body is moving.
@Taromovies3 жыл бұрын
thanks for your interesting response, as you describe you have experience with this situation, maybe you should wear more clothing even if you sweat more at the moment or plane your trip with some more stopovers to warm up before you push yourself so far, hope you’ll find a solution for your self, all the best, Taro

Very good explanations on effects and causes of Hypothermia. Not many are covering this important aspect of outdoor activities. And it can happen in Spring or Fall when the days are warm, but the nights cool down to near freezing. Dress appropriately, and know when to undress also. Very good video, Taro. (I still think you need better snowshoes. ;-) )

@@Taromovies They are expensive, but traditional modified bearpaws might help, they have a larger surface area, and don't have a tail to entangle in underbush. Real traditional rounded bearpaws are better though, much more surface area, used by trappers in Canada for years.
