If you think about it, as soon as Erlich left, Pied Piper actually did well as a company for a season.

But without Erlich the company would never have gotten as far as it did. Erlich understood the business side. He was able to actually sell the idea of Pied Piper to Peter Gregory when Richard couldn’t. He started and contributed to the middle out algorithm. He helped keep the server up during the stream. He bailed Richard and Pied Piper out of a lot of tight spots.

MEanME the future? What does any of that have to do with Erlich? The point is that Erlich was instrumental in Pied Piper getting to where they were. Monica and the “Sexy Boss Lady” (Laurie) were good at business but how much did they really help? Monica tried to when she could but only really helped them out a few times, and Laurie didn’t give a damn about them. As for Jared, he is good a business but only a certain side of it. The numbers, the administrative stuff, slowly molding Pied Piper into a legitimate company, and what he does makes him instrumental as well. But Erlich understood something about business that Jared couldn’t, that Monica didn’t have time to lead them through. He had an instinct that helped Pied Piper navigate through the world of investors and other politics and social bullshit. He could present the company in ways that Richard couldn’t. While Richard was too nervous, awkward, and throwing up, Erlich helped him present the business plan to Peter Gregory which really got them their start. And he would even push Richard to have an attitude of a CEO, giving him more confidence and resolve in his decisions. Erlich could see through the corporate bullshit that was fed to them, he even noticed the coup that was attempted on Laurie before Monica did. And even outside of that, Erlich bailed the company out of a lot of tight spots.

Erlich and Gavin interacting was low-key the funniest parts of this series. Not only were the scenes funny, but the point that a loudmouth like Erlich could seemingly interact on the same level as a CEO billionaire when confronted with each other really showed how these billionaire emperors really have no clothes so to speak. It's mostly talk and posture. And I would have paid good money to watch a short spin-off about the misadventures of the two in Tibet.

Bachman has an excess of low quality confidence, he has no practical skills and belittles people who do, constantly underestimates others and gives them the upper hand. He can only hurt himself and those around him. High quality confidence is based realistically on your actual abilities, is more goal-driven and less ego-driven. It stems from a sense of purpose in life; a feeling that something needs to get done, that a problem needs to get solved, no matter the cost.

What bothers me the most about TJ Miller's departure from the show is I always saw him as the "Yoda" of Silicon Valley. He doesn't need to be in every episode or have a pivotal role in the season, but he's there for guidance and a divine bizarre wisdom that only he can provide. The concept that Yoda could show up in a future Star Wars movie adds to the fun. Erlich could have done the same for this show from Season 5 on. Such a missed opportunity.

Erlich got 10% of a not so promising company, Pied Piper only became successful much later. Erlich was never a scammer to his incubees , a year's rent in his house would probably be worth 20k or so, most of the companies failed, he probably lost 100s of thousands in rent, he deserves the 10% once it actually works out.
