His character growth is actually pretty large. The entire point of his character is his relationship w Dinesh and vice versa. He hides it behind his persona, but they make it clear his relationship with Dinesh changes from strictly mean spirited hate/racism to genuine care. When your entire character is written around another character, and the relationship 180s, that's as big of a change you're ever gonna get. This ranges from their cooperative schemes in the middle seasons to the very end when Gilfoyle grants Dinesh access to the server even after Dinesh made it very clear "he will do ANYTHING to stop the intentionally broken release from going live". Richard choked and couldn't make a decision, Gilfoyle was the only one who had faith in Dinesh. Gilfoyle and Dinesh saved the internet when others were too weak. Gilfoyle's leap of faith was probably the most character defining moment in the entire series. NTM the ending where they start a business together and are neighbors for the rest of their lives. That wasn't Dinesh simply "snaking" his way into Gilfoyle's life like Gilfoyle said it was. That was genuine friendship hidden behind a veil. Gilfoyle played an equal role in that happening.

My best friend was very much like Gilfoyle - a genius programmer specialising in networking and security. He loved the character, both for the excellent accuracy and attention to detail in the technical stuff, and the attitude of a true ninja coder forced to work among mere mortals. Would love to see Gilfoyle get his own spin-off series or movie, could see him becoming a guru at the head of a new tech-cult, based on satanism, total freedom of information and crypto-anarchy.

yeah i was kind of disappointed to hear him say (10:50) "i like you. Not in a... you understand what I'm saying." I almost hoped we would explore some stoic part of his emotional side or something. His personal relationships are very off screen. He's used almost exclusively to deliver hilarious deadpan one-liners, or criticism to advance the plot, before returning to the background.

Derek Ocean i think they did that because they haven't addressed if he is still with Tara as she was not mentioned in season 5. But Gilfoyle spent a lot of time with Monica in the finale and I'm glad he has a friend he actually likes and views with mutual respect. The cute awkwardness around him and Monica as he tried to explain himself makes me hope we'll see them spend more time together and work as a team in season 6. This show doesn't have to turn into a romance show but it would be cool if they had two characters who you'd never expect to end up together, end up together at the end because the pairing does make sense, and it would be so great if it was written well. This show is known for romantic pairings that don't work, I'd love to see an end game couple with Gilfoyle and Monica that does work, and is successful.
