Welcome to our monthly conversation with Konstantin, who is one of the most respected voices on KZbin about what is happening Inside Russia. Konstantin Samoilov is a well-known KZbinr whose channel ‘Inside Russia’ comments insightfully on Russia’s decent into authoritarianism over the last few years. But now, like many others, he’s outside Russia, with no idea of when he can return there.
----------
CHAPTERS:
00:02:12 The crisis started on February 24th, 2022, when the first missile flew into Ukraine.
00:03:32 They're trying to keep inflation under control, but they cannot achieve that.
00:07:27 Elvira Nabiulina had orders to sugarcoat the reality. And she did for some time.
00:09:27 The collapse of global oil prices was the final straw that broke the Soviet Union.
00:10:30 It's a perfect storm, an economic tsunami that is hitting Russia right now.
00:12:31 Why in the world does Russia think that Trump is going to help them this time?
00:14:50 They get the control of resources and don't have to make products or process them.
00:20:08 Remaining oil storage facilities in Rostov are on sale and go for pennies on a dollar.
00:22:25 Numbers coming out of the Russian government are cooked, but IMF is using them.
00:25:32 Russia simply can't find people. Millions of people are needed for the economy.
00:32:48 The tsunami is not around the corner anymore. It's here. The storm is above Russia.
00:42:21 What is happening with Kursk is beyond crazy. I think the regime is also panicking.
00:44:31 I don't understand why Russian people are keeping silent about Kursk. Total apathy?

Heroiam slava. You know, I think Konstantin is smart, and his eyes are a lot wider open that most Russians. I know economics are his thing but he seems to have no problem talking about the Ukrainian strikes on Russia. Haven't ever heard him address the massive war crimes Russia has committed. I think I heard him mention them once and said basically 'I dunno.' I guess my point is.... I don't see much empathy for Ukraine from him. Its more - he doesn't like the war because its bad for Russia.... not because its bad for Ukraine. Thats why I stopped following him, Smart guy, is against the war which is good, but against the war for the wrong reasons, I think. Okay talk about economics and the oil refineries... but why not talk about the childrens hospital?

Yeah, I[m a big fan of him. He's wrong about Trump though. As was pointed out, Trump had met with Putin. He openly admires dictators. He also had Mike Johnson hold up aid to Ukraine for 8 months, despite it being popular among Democrats and Republicans. Trump winning would be the end of Ukraine. He would stop aid.

Konstantin, we Germans have always recovered like a phoenix from the ashes, how many times have we fallen? Too many times, but we are proud of what we once were, excluding 1933-45. Russia on the other hand has never shown the same determination, nor the will to restart, they just plod along with the same structures in a new wrapping, Zar, Chairman, Putin, all the same. You can't compare the two at all
@18_rabbit
@18_rabbit 2 күн бұрын
of course. But also Germany lost so much in so many ways in a quite tight time frame of 1914-1945, finally losing so ignominiously & having outsiders occupying it, etc. My idea and that of a german scholar friend of mine is that it's bcuz DE was so down and traumatized that it had no choice but to do precise wise new ways of doing most things (though DDR arguably fell right back in to the old-world trap of the militarized-life). Ethnic russian ppl will have to undergo some actual severe hardships and humiliation before they're motivated. They really are different from germans personality-wise partly bcuz there's a lack of imagination, a lack of being part of european society where the influences of The Enlightenment etc, which is how/why notions of democracy/human-rights came from. What we're seeing now is actually THE most interesting global sociological/political challenge since WW2

I’ve been a viewer and financial supporter of Konstantin’s channel since early in Russia’s war on Ukraine. And it’s been fascinating watching him grow into a trusted source of accurate information on other channels. I shall forever be impressed by his ability to preserve his objectiveness while covering what must be a personally painful journey watching his homeland and its people (his countrymen) spiral into this abyss.

It's especially annoying because they have access to smartphones, so there is no reason to be so uninformed. I sometimes hear people comparing russians to WW2 germans when they learned the truth about what happened, but they aren't really comparable. The Germans didn't have access to such information, russians do. They even gloat about some of the atrocities.

Russian economy limping along, are pretty amazing! But old Soviet Union military supplies are long and deep, even with corrupt officials selling off equipment and munitions for +30 yrs! (2005 movie Lord of War was inspired by real-life international arms dealer Viktor Bout. ) Putin exchange prisoner's for him, why? He's Putin's kind of guy! Knows stuff, knows military munitions connections! Here are some details about the real-world inspiration for Lord of War:iktor Bout A former Soviet military officer who became an international arms dealer and trafficker of blood diamonds after the collapse of the USSR. "Bout" is known as "The Merchant of Death". In 2008, U.S. agents took him down in a sting operation. 🚀🇺🇦💥💙🇺🇦🩵 ẞftukjg

I remember in 1991 or so seeing a news report in which a Russian woman says to a reporter, "How did we become so poor?". Perhaps in three or four years Russian citizens will be asking that question again. The answer will be one word - "Putin". Hopefully the Russians will understand that and will not be fooled into blaming Ukraine or blaming the west for problems caused by the idiocy of the Putin regime.

yes except not really one word Putin: actually he only exists within a club called the Siloviki , a few dozen or hundred, perhaps couple thousand elites. They operate by controlling the several federal security police/intell services and miltary intell service. Only Star Trek has the right analogous org/s armies etc that resemble what Ru actually is. VERY dangerous bcuz they just...keep...going and they will try to damage our way of life, bcuz they lack imagination, and they view economics falsely visavis international affairs.

CCP China is failing but it's a bigger economy than Russia so it's around 2031 before the full effects are known, it takes time because China is piling up debt to keep going by using the savings of its citizens. Russia did save money in a wealth fund prior to the war, since December 2022 Russia has posted 20+ billion losses on its financial reports, in 2025 it will run out of money in its wealth fund and no-one will lend it money except for cheap land or resources but it will be limited, North Korea is propped up by China to stop a US ally being a neighbour, Russia is in the weakest position at present!?!

@@geoffgill5334It’s a lot less fragile than Russia’s. The thing with China is that it has a very different kind of economic relationship with Europe & North America than Russia does. China needs US & European markets-and vice-versa. We’ve become interdependent. Now that the west has mostly weaned itself off of Russian hydrocarbons we don’t really need anything from them anymore. China benefits from a weakened, dependent Russia, actually.

Konstantin, thank you for the great work you have done, you are extremely intelligent and informative on the Russian economy. Economics is very difficult to understand and you explain their problems well. I am sorry you have to be going through this in your life and wish you all the best. I wish Putin would just stop, but evil dictators never learn.

The German example will not work for Russia. Except for 12 years of Nazism, Germany has been one of the most advanced nations with good government. Russia has been a backward country with terrible government for 500 years.

Not just 12 years of Nazism, there was no unified Germany til the Berlin Wall came down and the government in GDR East Germany was an awful brew of Stasi, KGB, communism, confinement under threat of death. Otherwise, Germany has seen some good governance.

If regime is changed to something like a western country it will take at least two generations before people of Moscow and St Petersburg have adapted. But since Russia is so vast and sparsely populated it will take several generations. And the Muslim population will never change.

indeed. Regardless, the logical thing for US/Nato to have done was immediate full mil intervention/assistance , and not only did we not do that, we couldn't even figure out a way to directly physically provide Ukr with assistance for the first four months at least! I'm an american who studied the history of US wars in great detail! I dn't know the true situation bcuz not involved, but i'm pretty sure that if this war doesn't slow/wind down fairly soon, then within a decade there will be a need for someone to demilitarize RU. Literally! I went to a very very very good uni program for international politics.
