Harvard’s Lawrence Tribe has forcefully remarked, “there can be no justification for halfway measures, let alone for doing nothing while Ukraine is destroyed. Inaction is an illusion: it would represent a cowardly decision to appease and to encourage further aggression around the world.” Similarly, 80 years ago, FDR warned, “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.” Interpreting that in the context of Russia’s illegal violation of Ukraine’s sovereign borders, Jeffrey Sonnenfeld argues that now is the time to act and seize Russia’s $300 billion in frozen assets to support a Ukrainian victory over an imperialistic aggressor.
----------
Jeffrey Sonnenfeld is Lester Crown Professor of Leadership Practice and a Senior Associate Dean of the Yale School of Management. He helped catalyse the retreat of 1,200 global corporations from Russia, and now strongly advocates for seized Russian Central Bank assets to be passed to Ukraine. Sonnenfeld is known as the founder and CEO of the Chief Executive Leadership Institute (CELI), affiliated with Yale University and for convening Yale's semi-annual CEO Summits, which have drawn thousands of CEOs over the years to engage in off-the-record peer-to-peer conversations.
We discuss topics such as "why the IMF naively 'endorses' Putin's fake economic stats."

He was basically ‘persuaded’ when the CIA visited him for a brief to behave himself. Consequently, he became a different person overnight. Indeed, he is now a hawk instead of a Russian agent. Amazing what happens when the establishment people visit you to lubricate your brain with the correct oil type 😂. If Trump wins the presidency, he will get the same treatment. They will wait to see if he behaves, or he will get a Jesus meeting to put his mind straight. We love the CIA and pentagon’s rulers when hey take charge.

I agree but the Belgian company Euroclear is apparently scared to release these funds. They are claiming this is because there is a fear of litigation if a cease fire between Ukraine and Russia is signed. Theoretically this could imply Russia can sue Euroclear for their losses and the company would be bankrupt. Euroclear themselves advocate for a legal pathway to releasing these funds but only if they do not risk losing their company.

And yet, the average American refuses to listen. They want to pretend there is no war, that russia did not declare war on the West, that the fighting is thousands of miles away, that the money is better spent on the homeless. Except that they hate the homeless and resent a penny of their tax dollars going to them. The influx of refugees when Ukraine loses the war, however, will knock the Americans socks off, and then the complaining will start again. Too late! IT WILL GET WORSE. RU is starting wars worldwide, it’s their lifeblood. That’s imperialism!

Despite the efforts of international law, the world is still falling short of its ideals. Putin's actions, in particular, are a notable example of this failure. In the early stages of the war he started, Putin publicly declared on television that he would no longer recognize or honour any international agreements made by past Russian governments. This statement has significant implications, as it essentially nullifies Russia's legal right to participate in international organizations such as the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and many others. In light of this, it is time for the international community to take a firm stance and impose consequences on Putin and Russia. Issue the eviction notices to leave all these offices, embassies, The UN and other facilities located in other countries, as well as reclaiming the land they occupy. In the end, Russia legally has no more Veto power in the UN as they are there illegally as per Putin's denouncing all former agreements made by others. Time to show Putin & Russia the door.

This kind of childish conception of international relations in terms of black-and-white moral absolutes, employed highly selectively against some and literally never against others, is why the entire world outside of Europe and its former colonies is rapidly realigning itself outside the West, and negotiating how to structure alternative international institutions to facilitate trade & commerce such that they'll function fairly, consistently & impartially - unlike the Euro-American post-war projects that were always biased to benefit the West at others' expense. You don't need to be a non-Westerner to recognise that the UN, IMF, WTO et. al. all function as tools of Western dominance & exploitation. You just need to have a brain, and know how to use it. Something entirely foreign to regular viewers of this channel, no doubt.
@Hits-dr4lt
@Hits-dr4lt 28 күн бұрын
@@lachlanbell8390 I respectfully disagree with your perspective, which appears to be influenced by a limited understanding of international finance and growth of nations economics. Despite not being American, I have spent over 50 years studying international finance and various geographic fields, and I have a comprehensive understanding of the global financial landscape and capital flow. To better understand the growth of nations, I recommend familiarizing yourself with the 1930 Banking codes and the 1933 SEC regulations in the United States. These regulations have had a profound impact on the economic development of nations and their ability to move out of economic cycles. China's current economic status is largely attributed to the USA's granting of exclusive special trade status and later the 1930s SEC regulations, which allowed the Chinese Communist Party to access bailout funding after the Asian currency crisis in the 1990s through the US financial system and markets under the same conditions and rules as other countries. However, China cheated by transferring its federal debt to provincial banks' balance sheets, claiming they were almost debt-free, and securing lower interest rates on new debt issues sold in the US finance system. The Belt and Road initiative has led many countries to become entangled in unfair deals, with China later altering the terms. This is reminiscent of a dictatorship's tactics. In contrast, the USA was the first to adopt international fair practices for foreign issuers, making it impossible for such exploitation to occur under its regulations. Additionally, exploring the Middle East from the 1930s onwards or the collapse of the USSR and the UK and USA's introduction of advanced oil extraction technology to help them rebuild and become financially viable again could provide valuable insights. However, this progress was undone by a single individual who prioritized hoarding wealth for the few and providing scraps to the rest, rather than promoting fair distribution across the economy. Regarding the USA, domestically, middle-class workers have been forced to pay for everything and are even ripped off of their government-controlled pension savings trust accounts (as seen in May 1983's "The Great Social Security Heist"). This has led to strains in the US system today, as well as similar policies adopted by other Western countries that have caused problems for their people. I believe that your statements are based on spin and reflect your limited knowledge about international finance, capital flow, and growth of nation cycles.

RuZZia is not gentle when it takes over an area. This is what I refer to when I say that freedom is on the line. And a defeat now would be no worse than a defeat later. In fact, a long term defeat may risk greater escalation, as it would be achieved through Russian collapse. I know the entire premise of this post is that we should welcome it, but the chances of nuclear options become greater when it's not just the defeat of the army, but of the entire regime. 3. Let Ukraine hit Russian territory when needed.

I agree. Sadly, what I have heard about the alternative in Trump is worse. And republicans have been a hurdle to getting weapons and gear to Ukraine.

You make some good points. I am sure the USA was thinking about the ridiculous collapse of the government in Afghanistan and worrying Ukraine would be the same. There are certainly many valid criticisms of Biden. However the alternative is far worse - a man with zero character who would throw Ukraine to the wolves.

So pleased you got Professor Sonnenfeld, Jonathan, well done! I saw his interview by DW many months ago and was very impressed by the academic rigour of Yale School of Management's analysis of the Russian economy. Collapse will come. We must see the economic, technological and military “power” of Russia in perspective. Russia is indeed a huge country in square km, but only has (a declining) 144 million inhabitants (Mexico 128 million, Japan 123 million). This is about 30% of USA or Eurozone. The GDP of Russia however is only 4% of the GDP of the Eurozone + USA, this is equal to the GDP of the small countries Belgium + Netherlands. And less than the GDP of the state of California. Relatively (per capita) the GDP of Russia is very low. Beside that the economy of Russia has signs of a 3th world economy. Half of the income is coming from oil & gas. Based on this, Russia isn’t a world power. And for sure, it isn’t a economic power. This is the reason they can’t build up and maintain a big army. The army they have is far beyond normal proportions in relation to their GDP. This hurts their budgets and prosperity permanently. In this perspective, Russia is just a dictatorship with a huge inferiority complex and dangerous megalomaniac dreams. The path they chose shall be and will be their downfall.

C’mon- people have been talking about russia’s collapse forever but their population is capable of dragging themselves around on the fumes of an old paint rag and the dregs of the vodka bottle for centuries, which is why they make such great decisions. Children are raised to believe that their highest achievement in life is to die for russia as soon as they graduate high school, or make baby soldiers while nursing the vodka bottle. Can the West come up with a scenario as tempting for conscription? They pay in drugs, what can I say….

Thank you Jonathan, for bringing in Jerry Sonnenfeld. I celebrate that he shared his views on the current delapidated state of Russian affairs. A highly qualified professor from Yale with many insights and an experienced mind to sift through the fog. What I share with some others here is sadness or anger about those who seem to almost cooperate with the criminal gangsters who have hijacked Russia. The IMF taking on those numbers as if they were real, the lack of stringent and timely support in weapons, the failure of European to make those 300 billions availabe to Ukraine. Great channel, appreciation from Germany.

Leaders should speak to the underlying principle, international law and rules based order, not “them”. When Jeffrey and Bill Browder speak about this they are in a powerful position to apply the principles to Israel. Otherwise, allies of Russia just dismiss all their good points. I find myself in agreement that the discussion of inclusion of Russia as an equal state among states is over. It is a pariah. No area for further friendship. Turning Russian assets over to Ukraine (and not some Western money grab) is just, and a down-payment on reparations.

Yes, invite him back! Sonnenfeld is perhaps my favorite of the commentators on Russia I have followed since the full scale invasion. His evaluation of the Russian economy is unique and conntroversial. Rebuilding is reality for Ukraine and every second it is let waiting is time lost for the Ukrainian people and businesses to support themselves.. Additionally, The European Central Bank has been a true rock around the neck of the defense industry's ability to expand production in smaller countries such as the Czech Republic until recently, but again, slow to come to TERMS, slow to act while the industry itself was starved for capital to meet demand. The faster the Russian collapse, the better for every living entity on the planet. Thanks, Jonathan, for bringing him back to us.
