How to choose a Silky Zubat Saw

Just bought a Zubat this afternoon. I NEVER expected it to be that good!! You can cut 4 inch branches in about 10 seconds with amazing ease.. You cannot understand how good these things are until you have tried one..

Never had a problem cutting with a curve saw at chest height, just start your cut at a 20-30 degree angle. If that is uncomfortable for your arm just widen the stance of your feet, that will drop you down a few inches. Straighter handle of folding saw makes this easier

It is hard not to recommend it to everyone as it is a personal fav with Shenae and I. I believe the trade off for large teeth is that it’s not as clean of a cut. If your pruning a tree, you want a nice clean wound that will heal nicely.

If you pick a Silky with Non Set Teeth particularly the Mirai Me teeth it should still give a very smooth cut. The key, is to make sure the branches your cutting match the size teeth you are using. Ie if using the XL tooth you would want the branch to be at least 2 inches wide. 😃 Nita.

a 52 inch Japanese silky pull saw would be the best. full tang fixed handle. With back carry sheath for easy carry. 36 inch blade, with gigantic teeth 🦷, and a 16 inch handle for leverage.

I have noticed that the fine tooth Zubat is 10 teeth per 30mm. On The bigboy and pocket boy, that would be medium tooth, but why is it called fine on the Zubat?

Hi back'bush, it is quite deceiving to go on the tooth size descriptions as they break all the saws into families. ie. Gomboy family, Zubat family, Gomtaro family etc. The tooth sizes are then broken up in that family, so a large tooth in the Gomboy could be a completely different tooth size to a large tooth in the Bigboy or Zubat. So always best to work with teeth per inch when comparing. Hope this makes sense 😊 Nita.

I have the Hayauchi 21 ft pole saw . Is there a hand saw that the blade will change between the two ?

Great choice in pole saw! The Ibuki saw has a blade that will fit on the hayauchi black pipe :) Shenae

So for coppicing hazel , smaller blade length... 27 cm to get into stall ,ideally Fine Tooth .. but silky only do a 330 blade lengt in fine. What would you recommend going for , 27 cm but large tooth or 330 and fine tooth?

Love my zubat 330 I do Backcountry trail maintenance for the National Park Service and I was issued one 3 years ago and it's been strapped to my work pack everyday since. One time I had to clear half a dozen 8"-12" (20-30cm) and at least one 16"(40cm) aspen trees that got blown across the access road, in a storm, just to get back to my barracks. Needless to say I keep a chainsaw in my truck 24/7 now but my zubat got me home that night.

If your only going to have one saw do everything make it a Zubat 330 large tooth.

When climbing I'm using a chainsaw 99% of the time regardless of pruning or a removal, but my Zubat goes everywhere with me. Can't beat the Zubat as a climbing companion, cuts fast enough, light enough to stick on and forget about it when accending/moving around a tree and just chews through wood. Sure you can get a Sugoi or something but anything above wrist size and I use a chainsaw, most people won't be planning on a full dismantle with a Silky saw so after a certain point having the biggest Silky is a bit pointless.

Hi, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Depends on the length Sugoi you are looking at. If 360 then I'd def go IBUKI if 420 Sugoi, that will win the battle! 💪

Large Sugoi is probably your best bet, curious though as to why a clean cut isn't important to you? Being honest with you if it's for large branches/small trees then you should just use a chainsaw. Sure it's possible to use the Sugoi to do those things but why would you? Doesn't matter how fast the Silky can cut it's never going to be faster than a chainsaw.

The tip and the smaller chance of the blade snapping made me opt the Zubat. Now I'm hesitating between the Zubat Xl teeth and the Sugoi. What's the main difference there?

Don't worry, we struggle to pick just one too! The Sugoi has a graduating tooth where as the Zubat has just the one tooth size. So the Sugoi feels a bit easier to use. 5.5 - 6.5 teeth per 3 cms. If it was me, I have a soft spot for the Suogi so that would be my pick 😃 Nita

ladies - that piece of steel to which the handle is attached is called the 'tang' - many saws have a partial tang whereas the Silky Saw have a full (eg:full length) tang - which is one of the saws most impressive features.

Great demo, I enjoy watching you both. The fine medium tooth blade took the most strokes and filled up the quickest. I'm not sure how you chose the XL tooth saw as the best choice when it required more strokes to complete the job over the large tooth , and appeared to take more effort. It also appeared that the XL tooth may have clogged more. Is there a sweet spot where a large tooth may be the best overall choice? Thanks

Hi, thank you for your comment! The large tooth is best as a general purpose saw. If your MAINLY cutting small branches or VERY dry deadwood then the fine tooth would be your choice. If your MAINLY cutting large, green branches then the XL tooth would be the best choice. If it is more aN even variety then the Large tooth would be the best one. I hope this helps, Nita. 😃

Hi, great vid as always, I'm learning so much from you guys. I can't seem to find the specs anywhere on dimensions though. Can you let me know the overall length of the Zubat 270 with sheath and without sheath? Also the blade width at widest point. Also the depth of the handle. I have limited space in my bag and am tossing up between this and the Gomboy but I'd prefer a fixed blade so really want the Zubat. Also, the sheath seems quite bulky.
