Silver Mont, just to propose an alternative, here is my theory.. - At the beginning of the Ring City DLC, what is the one thing we (the player) are doing?.. We are following Gael, remember the message signs with Gael's image, it was Gael who left the signs for us to follow. So, trough out the DLC, we are following on Gael's foot steps, until we reach Princess Filianore, who has a cracked open egg with her. What was inside the egg?.. the Dark Soul.. Who cracked the egg?.. I think Gael cracked open the egg and he killed Filianore for the Dark Soul. Now, there are two enemies we meet at area where the dead body of Filianore is.. One is Gael, who already consumed the Dark Soul of man and is busy eating the rest from the Dark Lords left and the other is Shira, who is hunting for the one responsible for Filianore's dead and as she says it.. "I've searched for thee,.. Dark Stricken creature" I think, Shira is looking for Gael but, she thinks we are responsible for Filianore's dead, after all; Shira confined herself inside a temple and never saw who was responsible for Filianore's dead. All that we really did was break the illusion by touching the already cracked open egg.

Maybe Midir´s soul is actually just a mass of humanity. See as how the soul is completely black, even the core. Meanwhile Artorias´ soul is black but the core is still white.

They "Challenged" the dragons. I think they were jealous of the immortality of dragons. They took over their surface world and struggled to rule over it as immortals. Practically everyone in the Dark Souls universe covets immortality, to the point where people even wish to become dragons themselves.
@KaiserAfini

Matheus Esteves Monteiro I believe humans could become dragons, giants/archtrees, pigmys or gods. After all, if with fire came disparity, then everyone was the same, human. Dragons and archtrees evolved after fire came to be and before it was discovered. So Gwyn's war was to destroy all who had any hope of contesting the god's role as apex predators. Except afterwards he couldn't get rid of the pigmys, them being immortal, so he started to get desperate and taking desperate actions. The rest is history.

As with all of Gwyn's gifts, I think it's the soul he got that made him do the gods' bidding. There's always a trick to his gifts, like the Ringed City meant to contain humanity, same with the four kings containing the humans in New Londo. Seath was made a duke of a library, not really a place where many people live. Gwyn's way of locking him up away from Anor Londo without making it look like a punishment. Gwyn is the kind of guy who'd give you deodorant for your birthday.

I have a theory about why the blood of the dark soul was dry. When the Abyss Watchers linked the fire, the wolf blood dried up and Farron became a swamp overnight. So my theory is that Ludleth was a pigmy lord, when he linked the fire, the blood of the other lords dried up, since they, much like the watchers, draw power from a single fragmented soul, in this case, the dark soul. That is what made the swamp in the city streets appear, so quick was the change that we can still find corpses clinging to the top of buildings in an attempt to avoid drowning. And Filianore's life giving power kept the city's ruin from becoming absolute.

KaiserAfini Wow. Yeah. It might also explain the pus of man. The corrupted humanity breaching the hollow. Since we all have a piece of the Dark Soul, maybe that's its way of reviving itself. Like Blood congealing. The old blood. 😱 Always had a feeling we were missing vital information about Ludleth, and we are still no where close.
@KaiserAfini

Glad you liked it, there are some pretty interesting details in the DLC left to explore. For example, remember how the purging stones were made in Dark Souls 1 ? They were former humans to which we transfer curses to. The purging monument is composed of skulls and we see the mound maker's pile has skulls and vertebra shackles, the monument anchor's Lapp's sanity and the mound anchors Hodrick's (more or less). So perhaps Hodrick and the Mound Makers were trying to make their own monument. Now what conclusions can be drawn about the founder, and by extension his katana, is something I am still pondering.
@KaiserAfini
@KaiserAfini 7 жыл бұрын
One last detail, remember what Ludleth said about the eyes of a fire keeper ? "We did all we could to spare her from them". Does he mean Filianore ? Her eyes are missing, her crown is like that of a fire keeper. So perhaps she did or rather threatened to do something against the gods and in favor of the pigmys, Ludleth was still loyal to Gwyn, had the eyes taken from her and taken to hidden area in Firelink, but one day they "went missing" only to return when we deliver them from the past.

Yes. His name heavily hints at it. Dark Eater Midir. The Chasm also looks kinda similar to the location of what looks like the first flame in the intro of DS1. I theorize that the gods couldn't find a way to eliminate the Dark so they decided to contain it by getting Midir to eat it. We know dragons can change form through corruption (Gaping Dragon changed form through gluttony) and we can see the dark crystals coming out of Midir's body and may have even gave Midir that Dark laser blast. Also Midir is a big nod to 2016 Shin Godzilla which funnily enough is a creature of radioactive corruption.

I think the fact that the egg Fillianore is holding looks like one of the vagrants from the first dark souls is really intriguing. Since they were always so rare and unimportant in that game I think they were pretty much written off from being anything significant, but if you think about it they were really interesting. The fact that one of the few ways to spawn them was by a lot of humanity being dropped or lost at once suggests a connection to the dark soul, and they fact that they will continue to travel to other worlds until killed shows that they are one of the few creatures that can travel the different worlds. Maybe that egg is a vagrant that continued to grow as it traveled many different worlds, gaining the power to trap the entire ringed city and remove it from time? That would certainly align with Gwyns desire to eliminate humanity as a potential threat to his rule, removing the strongest members of the dark soul lineage and eliminating their history, giving him the power to lie to all future humans and manipulate them into continuing the age of fire. I don't know if its just meant as a call back or cool Easter egg, but I think the presence of that egg could have some really cool implications on the nature of vagrants and their impact on the world.
@KaiserAfini
@KaiserAfini 7 жыл бұрын
So why is it rotting ? What is even that rot ? And more importantly, how can Filianore keep pressing her weigh against it but even our slightest touch causes it to crumble ?
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's one of those things where I can't help but wonder if it's intentional or not. Logically, there should be a reason it's a little like the vagrants. On the other hand... it's a bit of a stretch. By and large, I think it's just a coincidence. Or an easter egg!

I think that the reason the armor displays a "smidgen of life" is because it contains some of the last vestiges of the Flame in which the Dark Soul was found. And it was forged using these tiny flames because it was all they had. The Witches had their mighty Fire Sorceries, Gwyn and his Silver Knights had lightning, and Nito had his withering plagues. What did the pygmies have? One soul split among many, many people. So they returned to the Flame, and fashioned weapons and armor from it. Notice that in every game, the Abyss and the First Flame both are always underground, and the "Abyss" in the Ringed City is eerily similar to the cavern where the First Flame was found. So why did Gwyn not recognize that the weapons and armor of humanity was forged from the Flame? Simple, he did. He saw what it was, and was terrified of how humanity had turned "his" Fire into something that could be used against him one day. We know weapons once in service to the gods can be turned against them, look at how Divine Weapons in DS can become Occult Weapons, weapons built to kill the Gods. So Gwyn sees humanity, creatures with a soul which is the antithesis of his own, clad in the dull sparks of the First Flame, a flame that one day will fade and become Dark. So he seals the flame into the armor and humanity, binding it's power to them and turning the pygmies into a slow-burning fuel for their own weapons and armor. By doing so, he has forced them to either bow to the Darksign, or throw away their weapons and armor, leaving themselves defenseless. Remember, at this time Sorcery, hexes, and even things like the Dark itself either didn't exist or were not well-known. The only things Humanity could arm itself with was fire, lightning, death, and metal. So they accepted the brand so as to not be slain by the dragons outright, and we know what happens from there...

I believe, if you look at it, the egg was dark eater midir, I know it's mainly based on beserker, but I believe Game of thrones may have had a influence, as well as the legend of a girl and her wyvern. I believe they hid the fact a god's daughter, was not only to hid his fears of change, but the fact that she wanted a Dragon. I mean look at the nameless king, another child of the god. He was erased from history, to where his name was lost, JUST for ridding with dragons. And look at the daughter, almost no one knows about her, and she had what might of been a dragon egg, which is one reason why she may have been also locked away. As for the soul to midir, just like in the legend of the wyvern of Maud, but with a twist. In the legend of maud, her parents promise she can keep it, but one night she hears them say they will kill it why she sleeps. The twist version I believe for this version in DS3, is that she keeps the egg, sleeps, but never awakes to stop her parents from taking her egg, so they give midir a soul, not as a reward, but a tool to soak up all the dark, then, when it's all gone, they can kill two birds (midir, & dark (aka threat to gwyn's age of fire/light)) with one stone, then keep her asleep to not have her wrath apon them, or to keep her from crying to death, which in some versions of the wyvern story, maud does do.

I really want to know why the Milwood Knights were battling Midir before they ended up in the painted world. Cause didn't a piece of their gear mention their struggle against a Dragon of the Abyss or somewhere along those lines? So were the Milwood Knights near the Ringed City before?? ButcherGod Maybe The Ringed City was their original home. Filianore and her stead is blessed with the symbol of fresh grass. The Millwood knights left after something happened to their world tree. Sure, Gwyn "gifted" the Pygmies a new home. Either that, or their tree was the Cursed Rotted Greatwood, but I feel like the Undead Settlement was definitely not their home. Good question.

Yeah, that description does somewhat fit with Midir. I was under the assumption that their original home began succumbing to the abyss, so Shira sent Midir over to gobble it. I feel like the egg Filianore holds is continuing the gods' cycle, that is why the four great souls keep finding new hosts and why the main characters of dark souls 1 still have an influence on the ages that proceed them, and in breaking the egg it undoes everything the old gods "created" after they died. The reason lothric kingdom is so prominently there at the worl's end is because they didn't want to link the fire and rejected the will of the old gods (at least lothric did, and in doing so forced the kingdom to) *also I call it an egg cuz idk what it actually is

It's not anything I've ever considered! I guess it would depend on the series - I like making these for things that I feel you can have a good discussion on. That's why I also made videos for Destiny/FFXV as I felt they had a lot of things to talk 'bout. With anime/manga? I could see it being possible, but it would have to be the right series. There aren't too many that I watch currently. I guess I could do one about Dragonball haha. "What the hell is wrong with power levels."

4:35 The time after touching the egg can't be further in the future than the fight aganst Soul of Cinder, since Lothric Castle still stands during the fight against Gael, but is completely distorted in Dreg Heap and at the Kiln. This is very odd, since we were basicly walking from Dreg Heap to the Ringed City earlier. It completely breaks the visual storytelling. 6:35 Not quite. We don't know how much of the Dark Soul Kaathe had collected (nor do we know what he did with it). We also don't know how much the Pigmy Lords carry in comparison to Manus. 7:30 The problem with the Painting is, that we don't know what it really does. It could just be another wallhanger with a small world inside of it, which starts to fall apart when the painting falls apart. Also: Will the girl's painting stay inside the other Painting and burn away with it, or will the Ashen One take it outside, where it also falls apart ove time? by the way, I think you're trying to push the "soft talk" a bit too much near the end 11:35

I do believe our old serpent friend, or one of the unnamed ones at least, did wind up in the Ringed City. The massive serpent we find, the reason there isn't any more, and why we can't find any, is because should a serpent enter the city, the ring knights will uphold their ancient battle honor, or whatever you want to call it, and kill them, much like how we found the dead serpent

In regard to Filianore's "egg", that object looks remarkably similar to the Transposing Kiln, right down to the black, starry section within. It's possible that the Ringed City itself is the product of a constant transposition that FIlianore maintains, trapping the Pygmies within certain boundaries and perhaps even shaping the development (or lack thereof) of the Dark. Destroying the kiln (which seems to be wearing itself out as is) prevents Filianore from maintaining the false world. It's also possible that Filianore was made to transpose her own soul to create the Ringed City, which might explain why she appears to have so little energy left, even for the otherwise time-proof "gods", that she dies. Another possibility is that the Dark she was exposed to, or to be precise, the Dark that she was to keep weak, unhealthy, warped from its true potential, and ironically enough, Abyssal, eventually ripped her apart. Her eyes seem to have massive veins of Dark expanding from them, and a modder known as Bonfire VN has found that Filianore's eyes, when opened, just show a similar darkness. Finally, when the player finds the dead Filianore, her hair is still black, so it doesn't appear that she died of old age. Perhaps Gael killed her, perhaps she sacrificed herself to create the false city much like Gwyn eventually burned himself at the Kiln (though Filianore was truly expended), or perhaps she already died from the twisted Abyss and the Kiln was just barely operating itself at that point. Whatever the case, Gwyn definitely sacrificed his own daughter out of his paranoia and fear, and looking at how even the Nameless King (I'll just call him Faraam) was seemingly afflicted with the Darksign, this calls into question just how self-sacrificing Gwyn really was. By the time he had to head off to the Kiln, there might have been no one left to send instead. Filianore was already sacrificed to surpress the Pygmies and Faraam was an exile and perhaps burning in his own way. Gwynevere wasn't a fighter and was already too popular and known, effectively being a living symbol to rally around, with her husband, a flame god (Flann), getting to be the next successor to Gwyn. As for Gwyndolin, Gwyn spurned him and seemingly tried to lessen his importance as much as possible. In fact, by raising Gwyndolin as a daughter, that blocked him from ever actually getting to be the true ruler of Anor Londo, since all the societies in this medieval-inspired series (save for Izalith) seem to place kings as the ultimate figures. The Gwyn we ultimately encounter isn't even too far removed from the Gwyn of the opening cutscene; his arms are charred black just like when he was preparing a Lightning Spear, shades of how the Lord Souls burn the hands of their owners, and his sword is awash in the flames of his soul, just like in Gwyn's iconic pose in the intro. Perhaps Gwyn hadn't simply burned enough yet and Gwyndolin wanted to stick it to his father by engineering a champion to beat him, or perhaps Gwyn in part refused to burn himself as much as he would have another burn in his place. He's even melted and similar to metal or stone more than he is to burned, hollowed flesh. Moving back to the Ringed City, something I find interesting is that both Kalameet and Midir are a few of the only dragons in the series to have longer hind legs than they do front legs. The rest of the true Archdragons were like the Stone Dragon of Ash Lake, with much longer front legs than hind legs. They share this trait with Sinh in Dark Souls 2, which means that Midir and Sinh might have souls of their own due to being later descendants or parallel species to the Archdragons. While Kalameet doesn't bestow a soul, defeating him does result in the Calamity Ring, which certainly bears his likeness, one of his abilities (inflicted on the wearer who killed him), and is befitting of a partially mineral-based being. If Midir was granted a soul, that might defeat the point for why he was even made to eat the Abyss. Aside from the clear danger of his soul becoming corrupted, if that is what happened to Midir, the soul might grant sapience to some life forms. Considering how the Abyss is treated, especially by Gwyn, who sees the Dark as a whole as dangerous, Midir was basically born to be a living garbage compactor, and a sapient being might realize this and quite understandably rebel. As such, Midir's soul might be natural, and even the true Ancient Dragon in Dark Souls 2 (found in Freja's boss room) has a soul on its corpse when one travels back to the ancient past of fog and stone archtrees. The real Ancient Dragon is balanced in terms of its legs, but the hind legs do resemble those of Kalameet and Midir. A final element I find interesting is how consuming flesh, particularly of living beings, might be related to the Deep and curses. Looking at Aldrich, his cannibalism destroyed his body, and while he did unintentionally accumulate Humanity in him, similar to the rats of Dark Souls 1, the manner in which he acquired it seems to have corrupted it. This forms the Deep and Human Dregs, and due to Gael's methods of murder and cannibalism, as well as using blood as a medium instead of getting the true soul, the Painter's materials might end up being cursed instead of creating a world of comfort. Lokey_DS, a highly skilled fan translator, goes into the origin of the Deep with a fine comb on his Lokey Lore site, so that might make for a great read. Thanks again for this fun video! I've watched your stuff off and on for years. Sorry that this comment is so long, the Gwyn stuff wasn't planned, but those thoughts occurred to me after writing the first Filianore paragraph.

I was under the impression that ancient dragons were not actually able to breath fire. Therefore any dragon that can breath fire is not a true ancient dragon. Before the first flame there was no concept of fire, and once the first flame ignited any dragon that came afterwards was tainted by the flame. So once Midir gained a soul by devoring Abyss/humanity he gained both the ability to breath fire and use the darkness of humanity.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 6 жыл бұрын
I think technically they aren't breathing "fire" but they do have breath attacks. Of course, the nearest we have to that would be Kalameet - there's conflicting information as to whether or not he's an "Ancient Dragon" but his breath attack is fire-like, but obviously not normal fire.

I think that the ringed knights fought in the war against the dragons alongside the gods. But because the ringed knights armor and weapons that was forged in the abyss granted them so much power that they didn't needed gwyn's lightning to slay the dragons,by learning of the dark lord prophecy, by being so arrogantly bent on mantaining the rule of the gods, by being so arogant that he could not stand seeing humanity one day rule over the gods and by being so fearfull of the power of the humans and of what the age of darkness might be gwyn put the dark sign on the weapons and armour of the ringed knights to supress their power and deny us humans our birthright. Then he gave the pygmy lords the ringed city as a sign of aparent gratefulness for the help against the dragons but the truth is the ringed city was the same as the dark sign. A fiery ring meant to seal and keep us contained until the end of the world. As for his giving of filianore i think she has powers over time so she imprisoned the dark soul and the pygmy lords within the egg. Afer that gwyn put a spell on filianore so as long as she sleeps time will remain still in the ringed city and as long as filianore sleeps and time stays still the egg will not hatch keeping the dark soul and the pygmy lords sealed forever. Or so gwyn tought but the egg couldn't hold forever as we see it crumbled when we get to her. It seems gwyn made all in his power to deny the humans their rights and erase from history any contribution the humans might have had. To keep us supresed and mantain his rule. Not only that but by sacrificing himself to the fire thus linking our humanity to the first flame gwyn casted upon the entire humanity the same fiery ring that he casted upon the ringed knights thus giving birth to the curse of the undead. As for the reason he attacked the dragons is quite simple. He wanted the surface world all for himself.The gods and dragons could have coexisted but gwyn was far too arogant to share the glory of rulling over the world so either you are by his side and live or you stand against him and perish.Also he and the gods were envious of the dragons immortality knowing that for all the power they obtained they would die out one day. By killing the dragons gwyn fucked himself and us up. I think the only beings capable of fighting back against the abyss are the dragons. By being immortal they would consume the darkness of the abyss within themselves and after that the first flame would consume the darkness within them before they could be corrupted by it.
