Dark Souls Lore - The Nameless King / Gwyn's First Born
For the duration of this video, I'll be assuming that the Nameless King IS Gwyn's First Born, just for the sake of brevity and clarity. Whilst it is extremely likely, it's still not outright confirmed. I just wanted to mention that, because there are times when I say stuff like "We know X is Y" etc.

Well, Andre _was_ originally meant to be Gwyn's Firstborn -- which explains his character design, among other things -- but the idea was scrapped and Miyazaki stated that the Firstborn does not make an appearance in the final version of Dark Souls 1 (I guess he wasn't lying). Solaire was a massive red herring, though.

I'm sure Andre was meant to be a descendant, not the first born. It points more to Astora being a city of deities, which also explains why the Astora armor is called the Elite Armor, Elite as in the gods and their children being elites.

@ingonyama70
@ingonyama70 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think Nameless is something as clear-cut as a hero or a villain, at least until he Hollows like his Daddums. As a war god, the Firstborn only had respect for arms and battlefield prowess -- something the dragons had in spades, if you look at Gough's dialogue. A 20-to-1 kill ratio is pretty amazing no matter how bad you are at math. So a betrayal makes sense from that perspective alone. And yet, this interpretation of him clashes strongly with the Warriors of Sunlight, benevolent comrades-in-arms who place "jolly co-operation!" above all else. They're the original Sunbros. Even if Solaire's quest for "his own sun" is a search for power, he greets you, a comparatively weak Undead at the time of your first meeting, with friendliness and respect. The Sunbros are a Covenant of nice guys (not to be confused with "Nice Guys" who whine about friendzoning). So, let's see what happens when we combine these disparate ideologies. You have a guy who both a) respects strength and prowess, and b) founds and watches over a "band of brothers" style covenant of protectors and heroic champions. Obviously loyalty is extremely important to him. Let's flash back to the Dragon Wars, and Gwyn's companions at the time. He's buds with Nito, First of the Dead, and the flame-happy Witch of Izalith, both of whom use "underhanded" tactics -- poisoning the dragons once Gwyn's shocked their scales off, and burning down their homes, the Archtrees, presumably in an attempt to demoralize them. Such tactics, which have less to do with combat prowess and more to do with dirty fighting, might have left a bad taste in the Firstborn's mouth. The last straw, however, would have come from Gwyn's third ally, the recipient of a piece of his Lord Soul: Seath the Scaleless. A weak, malformed, twisted dragon sorcerer who betrays his kind and uses sorcery to compensate for the fact tht he can't fight his own kind "fairly". Such a creature would be the absolute antithesis of everything the Firstborn stands for, even before he went crazy and started doing mad magi-science in a castle that's too small for him. The Firstborn's already smarting from Gwyn relying on Nito and Izalith's tactics, and now we have this traitor to his kind, who relies on methods that have nothing to do with being any kind of good at fighting. If i were the Firstborn, that would have definitely pushed me over the edge. I'd want to fight on the side of the conflict that aligned more closely with my morals, no matter what I had to give up. And given what we know from the "Sacred Oath" miracle, it talks about an heir of Sunlight, his faithful First Knight, and the loyal dragonslayer who served them both. Now that we've assume the Firstborn had a beef with Seath -- not to mention the fact that we find him in Archdragon Peak -- we can pretty much peg Dragonslayer Ornstein as the first knight, and Havel the Rock as that loyal dragonslayer. Truly a trinity not to be messed with -- at least until Gwyn decided to mess around with the Curse of the Darksign. This might even have been the trio that kicked off the rebellion against the Gods, though that's even further into speculation than this. Just my own take on the mythology, but I feel it makes a good deal of sense.

This makes me wonder why the key to Archdragon Peak - the "Path of the Dragon"-Gesture - is found after Oceiros' boss room, who emulates Seath and everything the Nameless King supposedly despises.
@belland_dog8235
@belland_dog8235 3 жыл бұрын
@@randomcarbonaccumulation6478 Well, NK doesn't despise the Dragons, just Seath. But Oceiros would not have known that it was just seath he hated., as the NK has his name struck from history and all (or almost all) records of him destroyed as well. Oceiros, probably just wanting anything related to the Dragons before he went mad, probably saw the likeness of all the stuff in that room behind his boss room and thought "Hey, looks kinda draconic" and starting researching or whatever he does. It probably had nothing to do with Seath, just other dragons, but Oceiros wouldn't know any better, how could he?. That's my theory anyway.
@kuronishiro7239
@kuronishiro7239 3 жыл бұрын
@@belland_dog8235 I don't think so because if you look closely where we fought Oceiros there are lot's of stone that are engraved so we could imagine that it may be someone who wanted that all this knowledge about dragons doesn't disappear and moreover we can find a pattern on the ground just before the Oceiros' room that we can also find at the dragon peak. So it's clear that the Nameless King has something to do with the Lothric kingdom. Btw sorry for my mistakes english isn't my mother tongue

In regards to Yorshka there's an easy way to reconcile her and Gwyndolin being siblings despite him being Gwyn's last-born. They could always share a mother, just not a father. If Yorshka was the result of Gwyn's wife having an affair of some sort with a dragon she would both be Gwyndolins younger sister even though Gwyndolin is Gwyn's youngest child. This would also give the Nameless King motive to betray Gwyn and join the dragons. If he decided to side with his mother that could easily be the the foolish act that lead to his removal from history.

to add this theory, The mother could have been Velka who happens to be referenced as one of the deities from the time. It would certainly add much motive as to why Nameless would have tuned his back on Gwyn.
@Seinglede
@Seinglede 7 жыл бұрын
Titanic Tuna I almost put that in my original comment as well, but decided to keep it to a single point. This would also explain Gwyndolin and the Darkmoon Blades connection with Velka and, if Yorshka and Priscilla are in fact the same person as I believe they are, would explain Priscilla and the Painted World's connection to Velka as well. It could also explain why Velka is considered a rogue deity. If we consider all the dark souls games part of a recurring cycle, as they are, the recurring theme in Dark Souls 2 of the queen of the kingdom tempting the king into letting the age of dark come to pass could be meant to be harking back to the events preceding Dark Souls 1. If Velka realized the Age of Fire's end was inevitable then it's not strange that she would "betray" Gwyn. I even wonder if Velka was always called Velka. Thinking about it now maybe her true name is in fact Ariamis. Priscilla herself says that the Painted World is a kind place. Maybe her mother, Velka/Ariamis, made it to protect her from being killed by Gwyn. That could have even been the inciting incident that lead to her siding with humans against the gods, to get back at Gwyn for trying to hurt her children.
@Titanic_Tuna
@Titanic_Tuna 7 жыл бұрын
I just thought that Velka would be the perfect character who fits the missing piece of your theory. I just hope we get to have more mention of Velka in the upcoming DLC. Hopefully a bossfight if we're lucky.

@Solid_Seth 7 жыл бұрын
I remember seeing an interesting theory regarding Priscilla being the daughter of the Nameless King. Since Priscilla has an ability that is practically the bane of the gods, you would think that Gwyn would of had her killed on the spot. So why was she just banished into the Painted World instead of being killed? And here's what the theory believed. Despite her being an "abomination", if she truly is the daughter of the Nameless King then that makes her the grand-daughter of Gwyn. Now its not uncommon for parents to have a hostile relationship with their children, as seems to be the case with Gwyn and the Nameless King. However, parents tend to have a soft spot with their grandchildren. It's rare that you hear of a volatile relationship between a parent and their grandchild. So despite his anger towards his son and despite Priscilla being a threat to the gods, maybe he just couldn't bring himself to have her killed because she is his grandchild and she didn't choose to be involved in any of this. So since he couldn't keep her around because of the threat she posed, but didn't want to kill her, he chose to have her banished.

The Firstborn is like a hollow in appearance, somewhat resembling Gwyn´s face after he linked the fire. As you said it could be that the bell not just summoned him but brought him back from the dead. But I don´t think he linked the fire and I find it hard to believe he wants an age of dragons. Great Lighting Spear says that he had respect only for arms and nothing else. There would be less challengers in the age of dragons and since he fought dragons during many years it is safe to assume he once considered them his hardest enemies. But after dozens of dragons it starts to get easier and the battles would lose their luster. He would seek new challenges. What bigger challenge than an undead that never gives up and always try new strategies? I think that he sees the dragons as battle comrades, beings strong enough for him to consider them friends.Remember what Gough said? For every dragon killed they lost three knights. So in the Firstborn´s eyes dragons are superior to the Gods´s army even though the Gods emerged as the winners.

It would make sense that a god of war would test warriors strength before letting them enter his kingdom. Daniel Antony; Sometimes, a child who was born in unusual/unfortunate circumstances would be not only raised, but adopted by their grandparents. Teen pregnancy? If the grandma was willing and young enough to make it believable, it could avoid a scandal. (See Dr. Who ep. “The Empty Child” for a variant on this). Mom’s an imprisoned abomination crossbreed, dad’s a runaway traitor? Sounds like someone who could really use the protection a “legitimate” parentage would offer. Of course, who offered this protection? Gwyn, as a doting or at least begrudgingly accepting grandfather? Gwynn’s wife or consort? Or perhaps Gwyndolin himself raised Yorshka, and told her he was her elder brother. Hey, better “your dad was the sun god who died for us all” than either “your dad’s an exiled traitor.” And why not “I’m your father”? Gwyndolin already showed that he has self-esteem issues. Born deformed, forced into a gender role he wasn’t comfortable with... he hid behind an illusion of Gwynevere instead of ruling outright. He wouldn’t see himself as any more palatable a father than the Nameless King. But that’s just my take.

I have a theory - in Dark Souls 1, Ornstein is an illusion, but Smough isn't. You are told in DSIII that Smough was the last guy left guarding Anor Londo, and that Ornstein had left to seek the Nameless King. Doesn't this explain why Smough smashes Ornstein's body when you defeat him? It's because he knows it's an illusion! Whereas Smough's body is treated with care, if it is him that you defeat first. So, I think - and this is just my opinion - that the Chosen Undead killing Smough is cannon. Smough was the last one left because Gwynevere, Ornstein and Gwyndolin were all illusions. And we now know that Gwynevere left for Lothric, and probably Gwyndolin and Ornstein went with her(she left with a ''great many deities'', right?). Gwyndolin then returned to Anor Londo only to be devoured by Aldrich. Just a theory! I think that it makes a lot of sense with the DSIII item descriptions.

+VenomtheOne I've mentioned this before in another video - it's possible that the soul and ring were used to create the illusion, that it's born from those two things that would have a strong memory of Ornstein

SwinnyUK but if ornstein is slain he drops his soul an illusion can't have a soul however considering the "alternate theory" for every decision made a new universe is created in which you make the exact opposite decision so in one universe you kill ornstein he doesn't go to Lothric and archdragon peak but in another he stands with smough and fights the chosen undead but no matter what it is impossible for ornstein to be an illusion if he was an illusion how could he drop a soul?

I think it's worth noting that the Nameless King/Faraam/Gwyndor (whatever I like how it rolls of the tounge) foolishness might be much deeper than just aligning with the dragons. In DS2 you have those two paths from Majula, Iron Keep and The Lost Bastille. In the lore it states that both of them hated each other. Considering Iron Keep and The Lost Basille are representations of Gwyn and the Witch of Izalith, it's subtlety saying that the hatred between the two is still continuing (the went to war with one another). What area is on The Witch of Izalith's side, Heide's Tower of Flame. I always thought it odd that an area so connected to Gwyn was on the side of The Witch but treating HTOF as Nameless King/Faraam/Gwyndor area it makes more sense, especially with Old Dragonslayer and "DragonRider". Maybe I'm reading too much into it when I say this but considering HTOF location, Nameless King/Faraam/Gwyndor might have sided with The Witch as well who went to war with Gwyn at one point. It's deeply interesting if true because if so then it appears Gwyn wasn't a beloved ruler and is more reason for the Nameless King/Faraam/Gwyndor to be stript of his status, he really did the ultimate betrayal. Also a bonus, you know how angels are a big thing in DS3, in Iron Keep there is an angel satue above the bridge. It isn't Dark Lurker and is female. It seems angels have been a big thing from the begining.

Gwyn literally means white however white is synonymous with being pure or blessed.. because different contexts and connotations can generally change a word unlike English, it's quite hard to directly translate every word to an english one... for example: if you ask for someone's age in Welsh your really asking 'how many years do you have' see how it doesn't fit into English very well.

I have this to say. Remember the darkened Orenstein in DS2? Perhaps the king turned him away, and he went to Drangleic, perhaps to the old cathedral to atone for his "sins", or something. Perhaps he was unworthy, serving with Gywn and all. I also believe that the Nameless King sorta gave up on the world after being defeated. He watched close by, but why care? His enemies were getting his revenge. Also, Solaire. He is the true Lord of Dark Souls. Praise the sun, brothers.

Gwyndolin may be worshiped as a moon god famously in the first game...but in the third it seems knowledge of his god status may not be known outside of Irithyl. As for the first born...I think the matter is likely complicated. We don't know what inspired him to join the dragons. Only that his father disapproved so much that the first born was disowned to the point of losing his name and status in Gwyn's court. Kinda hard to take away in born powers...but all else could and was taken from him.

By the way, I'm a little confused about the whole phantom thing. You can see Solaire is "physical" in your world near several bonfires, but I didn't realize he was considered the Chosen Undead in his own world. I thought he was a part of your world, like the way Frampt or Gywn are part of your world. I assumed every world had its own Solaire, not that he had his own world. Sorry about how long this comment was.

The way Solaire puts it, his world and your world have "overlapped" momentarily, which is why you're able to interact with each other physically. And yet when he's not physically there, he can still be summoned into your world as a phantom via his sign, etc.

How about this one, you failed to consider the full implications of Yorska only mentioning Crow and Dragon and flying. More conventional like climbing and more fantastical or magical means are not considered. How she naturally assumes the player, a fully human (or hollow) looking creature to be these things. Then how she is shocked, amazed and ashamed even if you say you can not fly. Also note she does actually know of the Pontiff who does posses a flying analogue ability by magic. I'd be willing to go so far as to say this suggests she knows of or has met Crow / humanoid and Dragon / humanoid shape-shifters, that can fly. I'd say it also suggests a connection between the two factions that have those creatures central.

Theory time: I believe that Forossa was destroyed due to their worship of Faraam/nameless king and therefore they were seen as heretics that must be destroyed, it makes sense to why then many kingdoms feared them. And also the reason he sided with the dragons is most likely due to Seath, maybe seeing his father and a dragon gave him the idea that they're actually sentient creatures with thoughts and feelings and seeing the capabilities of coexistence with them drove him and his curiosity to ride one, also think about it the way to archdragon peak is in the irrythyll dungeon, so I believe he watches over irrythyll and helps prisoners (who are primarily mages) escape

I've been waiting for this video for a while. You always do the most research and your name definitions are very insightful. I believe the king is Gwyn's firstborn the evidence is to numerous to stand against that theory unless Fromsoft retcons that he is Gwyn's long lost twin brother. Yorshka on the other hand I think that she is Priscilla's daughter and like your theory she didn't inherit the lifehunt power from her mother and was allowed to leave the painted world. The part about Gwndolin being her brother in my opinion is thay Gwyndolin posthumously adopted her in the name of Gwyn because I believe the Seath + Gwynavere = Priscilla.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Lifehunt is a bit of an anomaly. Could be the result of Seath trying to research "immortality" (and instead coming up with something that ends life) ooor maybe it was NK's doing, to create something that can be used as a weapon against the gods. Now I kinda want a "Painted World 2.0" DLC haha.

If you separate the name Faraam into three syllables Fa (Which is a Chinese name meaning "firstborn" I'm pretty sure?), Ra (which is the sun god), and lastly "Am" (which just could be exactly how it sounds, "I am" or just "Am") rearrange the name into a makeshift sentence "Am Firstborn Son" and víola! The name Faraam eludes to saying "I am the Firstborn son"

Because Gwyn is a Celtic name and the gods in dark souls are generally connected to the sun I think it would be reasonable to assume that the Nameless King's name could be related to Celtic deities of the sun. There are a couple of gods associated with the sun in Celtic mythology but in particular, the two "Belenos" and "Grannos" are the male ones that fit the bill. You may have already noticed the pattern, both these names have the ending "-nos" and hell, "Grannos" is only two letters away from "Gwynnos" which is what I'm proposing. Not only is "Gwynnos" apt for cultural and symbolic reasons, but I feel like it's exactly the type of thing DS would try to pull off. Like, it's literally "Gwynson" with the suffix flipped, which is the exact type of thing I would expect from Fromsoft, the creators of the vaguest and most punishing game series.
