My dad had collected so many silver coins that it made the back end of my car sag when we moved it after his death. He bought silver dollars, silver coins and silver proof sets. The silver proof sets (60s-70s) weren’t worth much more than face value. Ditto the other coins. Frankly, I was surprised. Even WWII pennies (steel), which I figured to be worth something. Not enough to justify the time. I spent months going through coin books with each coin. Then it hit me. My dad didn’t get it. It’s a hobby, not an investment! He also bought a lot of copper pipes, wrapped them in oil cloth, and buried it in his backyard. It’s still there, I’m sure. And yes, we had 6 months of dried and canned foods which he canned from the 20 fruit trees we had. We also had a bomb shelter (of course!). He also tried to drill for water, but in LA? SMFH. I hope I’m not coming across as bitter. I’m not at all. My dad was a war hero (some of the roughest battles in WWII) a liberal, democrat, anti-racist in the 50s!, and a life-long Marine, with what we now call PTSD. And his wounds made him paranoid. A hero, my hero & a good man. A terrible investor!

The trick is finding something people would buy. Gold is usually in government coins and mint bars. But sometimes there are custom poors and shot. You pay high premium for the bars and coins, but people recognize them and trust them. Meaning they’re more likely to buy them. Not a fan of coin shows or slabbed gold coins... nothing against either because buyers and collectors can do whatever they want. I've got a few dealers I have worked with for years and have a wonderful relationship with each one. I buy gold on a scheduled basis and vault it for a rainy day and thankfully it hasn't rained for me personally in decades. I purchase silver and exchange it for gold as well. This way I have exposure to both precious metals. Stay "money" safe everyone as our currency has been and will continue to decline over time. Love your channel and how you show people the various ways to buy and sell metals.
@Lpreilly72Ай бұрын
Currencies all decline. It’s called inflation & a modicum of it is essential for a healthy economy. We don’t want deflation. The only question is: has your income remained stable or inflated sufficiently? In 1972 gold was $36/ounce. But my dad, an engineer for NASA made $23,000 a year (he made $135,000 on his retirement in 1981) and our house cost $21,000 (LA home in the Valley worth 8 million today). Just because the dollar is worth less means nothing unless it’s matched against your income & cost of goods. And just because gold costs more doesn’t mean it’s worth more.

What people don't understand is the fact that Gold is not "appreciating" in value - the dollar is depreciating. Gold holds its value - it is a constant value - real value. It is the same today as it will be tomorrow. In 1924 the "cost" of an average house was 6 bars of Gold, that same average house today still costs 6 bars of Gold! Gold is not an investment - it is a way of securing your existing wealth. All this talk of $10,000 per ounce is really quite meaningless because you need to look at what that $10,000 will give you in real value. Hold your Gold to protect your existing wealth!. Anything dollar based is depreciating everyday as more dollars are printed - the scary depreciation will come when total trust in the dollar is lost and then...... like the Weimar Republic, you will take a wheelbarrow full of dollars to buy a loaf of bread!!! Your Gold will be worth a truck load of dollars per ounce.
@franklinmartin810325 күн бұрын
CORRECT. The dollar is shot, gold holds most value, but depends on Market and spot. In 2004 premiums on one ounce gold was significantly lower than the premiums paid today. The spread on buy and sell are the only profits these coin shops can make. That means trying to stay in business when the gold you sold last week at spot price then won't cover the replacement cost for new stock next week when spot goes up by $100.00 So premiums increase as the spot price gets more voitile.
@Lpreilly7210 күн бұрын
@@Kysushanz 5%. That’s as much as I’d put into gold. As you said, it’s a hedge, NOT an investment. Metals cost money to store, stiff premiums when you buy or sell (which kill profit margins) and they earn no income while they’re sitting in your expensive bank vault. So, unlike stocks, there’s no compounding of interest and dividends, which is a major reason to invest. And coins aren’t even that. They’re a hobby. As for Weimar, I’ve been waiting for the next Great Depression for 75 years. Still waiting.

A person who puts time effort money into restoring a car then trying to sell it for all they’ve invested in it usually will not get what they put into it back out of it. Same with modern gold coins. Unless it’s a coin that’s in demand by others due to low mintage and to fill the spot in their “collection” Coins of modern day made of precious metal are made for collectors, it’s a hobby. Gold bullion coins or gold bars is what someone might buy as items to cash in on. But coins in a collection is someone’s personal hobby. To collect the gold buffalo from its first issue date to present date is like a hobby, it’s not for taking it to cash in on it because it’s gold and gold went up to 3 thousand an ounce. It’s a hobby, coin collecting, graded coins in perfect excellent condition, no flaws is satisfying to the collector for their collection

@@carstenf279 How is the value of a dividend-paying stock inherently different? Its "offspring," as you put it, is entirely dependent on a company's performance and decisions, which are, in turn, tied to consumer sentiment, management, and market fluctuations-none of which are guaranteed or "rational." Gold and silver, however, are tangible, finite resources with intrinsic properties. Silver has critical industrial applications, and gold has been a universally recognized store of value for thousands of years. Unlike Bitcoin or tulips, their demand is rooted in both utility and history. You can't 100% guarantee that some company you're invested in doesn't go belly up and makes your investment worthless. Anywho I definitely appreciate the discussion, it's nice to have a civil conversation rather than a crypto boy attacking me because I don't want bitcoin lol! Merry Christmas

looks like he offered usual spot price. he will turn around and make around $150 on each. thats how dealers make money. nothing special
@SilverSeekerАй бұрын
Well they all offered over spot, and of course dealers have to make money... that's not at all what this was about. It was to show what to expect when you go to sell as well as show how EASY it was to sell it also.

I never got spot for those libertads. I will not even consider them, or platinum coins, or old gold coins.

Personally, …. Would NOT touch numismatic coins. WAY OVERPRICED and not reliably sourced. An unwitting public has been duped before to buy gold leaf tungsten.

Coins are for collecting and it’s a hobby. Same as if it’s model trains, classic cars, a record collection, what have you. If you buy to profit from any of the above then you may be disappointed. It’s a hobby, coin collecting.

I disagree. Gold is a commodity, there will always be an intrinsic value in gold coins. In 2000 an oz of gold was $274.50, 24 years later it’s $2,600
