Durge as a companion would be terrifying because he may occasionally fail a will save and go murderous and then you’d have to contest said save to keep him in line

Honestly that would be interesting,considering we don’t have a Dragonborn or a sorcerer as a companion in the game so it would have been cool if that was a thing.

If Durge was implemented as a companion I doubt Larian would make him occasionally go berserk while in gameplay cause that would get annoying real fast. It could happen once in order to bring up conversations about the urge but I don't see it happens occasionally while you're exploring or something.

i WISH durge could have been a companion. he is essentially the main character of the game and so obviously ties in pretty directly with everything and the urge could be a very fun downside to try and mitigate.

Indeed, that would be interesting. It's worth noting that durge does appear, in a way, in non-dark urge playthroughs. *SPOILERS FOR ACT 3* After you defeat Orin the Red and get her netherstone, you also get the chance to explore (and loot) her living quarters. Inside Orin's living quarters, aside from the usual loot and bhaal stuff, you will find the dead body of a familiar looking white dragonborn.

That's just it though: essentially the main character. Meaning in a playthrough where you're playing as anyone else, you as the player character chance being overshadowed by who in this theoretical scenario should be straddling the line of secondary character like how someone like Karlach or Astarion sorta do, which might kinda detract from the narrative for your own character and the overall experience in turn. ...don't get me wrong, were it not for this, I'd be on board with your idea, but I can see why Larian didn't make him available.

Because they made a prequel game/interactive comic where the protagonist is Tav and the Dark Urge is the villain who wins and kills Tav. Therefore they made it almost impossible for both characters to exist in the game: either (a) the Tav character (somehow) survived or gets resurrected and the Dark Urge gets a nasty case of overdue karma or Tav is straight up dead and the Dark Urge is forced to atone for every evil thing they/he did

Durge is silent because he is trying to hold his stuff together. I enjoy playing as the Durge and being a bit incosistent in behaviour at the begining. It's like him trying to work it all out and find the new "me" for himself.

Durge, also known as the Dark Urge, is a bit of a mixed bag. He is a playable origin character like the the others, but if you choose anyone but him, he is not a companion. Spoiler reasons for not saying more, though he is still present in a manner of speaking.

He is mostly considered as the true/canon protagonist of the game, but is heavily recommended that you do not pick him for your first run.
