My Tav was a Dark Urge (Resisting it), so he was like "Wait... You want... ME to be the leader of the group. Have you all lost your minds?!" ... At which point he looked at the party and realized he was actually probably the most competent/stable of the gang and went "oooookay nevermind then, leader it is". XD

Astarion has his moments of being very self-aware of the tropes during the story, funnily enough. He calls everyone in the group a bunch of weirdos, including himself, calls his romance with a Durge a romantic tragedy that can profit many-a-smut-peddler from all the angst, among other moments like these.

Given you can play as any origin, it seems like the sole reason Tav is the leader is based on the scenario where you save Shadowheart/meet her and Lae’zel. Shadowheart assumes you are as you went above he head to save her. Tav has to make decisions after this bc Lae’zel and Shadowheart are bickering. Everyone who meets them now assumes Tav is in charge.

Karlach, who is prone to anger issues and does her idle dance at the most inappropriate times? Lae'zel, who asks you to fight her and then gets emotional because you're fighting? Shadowheart, who bickers with and antagonizes everyone who talks to her? Gale, the wizard with a nuke in his chest and falls in love with anyone that pays him the minutest amount of attention? Wyll "Rehearsed Superhero Pose" Ravengard? Astarion, the vampire who practices one liners in front of a mirror despite having no reflection? Yeah, Tav is the leader of the group by default. Nowadays, I've learned to have a loose outline of events I can pull from and I am more comfortable letting the players drive the narrative with their actions and I adapt my plans as needed. When I'm a player in that group, I'm usually the voice of reason trying to keep us out of too much trouble, but I don't always succeed. Reminds me of my Necromancer's excuse to cleanse the Shadow Curse. The one and only reason he doesn't want there to be a massive undead curse cloud is because it's not HIS undead curse cloud and he can't stand the sight of gods flexing their superiority over mortals as better necromancers so he decided to clean up the curse to spite Shar...and in the eventual future cook up his own Shadow Curse one day by studying some residue samples he took during his stay in Act 2. He also killed Loroakhan not due to any moral reason regarding Aylin, but because he wants the immortality but Loroakhan refuses to share while encrypting the ritual to only work on him so he decided "If i can't have that immortality, neither can you!" He plans on taking over the tower by pushing Rolan off it one day to reverse engineer the ritual to use it on Aylin. Sometimes, extreme pettiness can ironically lead one to do good things...for all the wrong reasons.

i always thought shadowheart was just being shadowheart when she hit us with the “so the leader of the pack has come to make their rounds” or whatever she says, but if your tav is outside of the camp and you’re playing as one of the characters when you talk to someone else they all go “not right now, but maybe i’ll have a chat with tav” LIKE??? WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE
@silentwalker434
@silentwalker434 Жыл бұрын
I think there are some good reasons for why Tav is the leader of the group. Shadowheart might be pragmatic and practically enough to lead the group, but her whole Sharran quest and amnesia proves a hindrance to her ability to lead since like Wyll, she's got her own boss up top to deal with. Lae'zel might embody the qualities of a firm leader, but if she were in charge she would likely be too strict and nobody would want to follow her. Astarion is....Astarion. Need I say more? Gale could function as a good second in command, but not as leader because of his obvious condition of needing magic items and that could skew his judgement as a leader along his all baggage with Mystra. Wyll might radiate main character energy, he is unfortunately bound by his contract and can't be considered a reliable leader with him still being leashed by it. So Tav is somehow the most sane and grounded person out of all of them.

She's also funny, sweet, and has a can-do attitude. -i would die for her- so not only would she inspire team morale, she'd also know when to call the shots as a tactician, but also bring levity to the group as a leader bc she's always crackin jokes. also, im pretty sure a lot of the other characters already like her, canonically, or are in the very least neutral towards her. hell, even laezel, who doesn't like tieflings, was super complimentary towards her battle prowess. which is a lot, coming from laezel. Now that I think about it Wyll seems to be less bound by his dommy-mommy than Shadowheart and Laezel by theirs, because of their blind faith. All it took for Wyll to defy Mizora was having to kill a non-devil for her. He didn't even know whether Karlach was innocent, only that she isn't a devil, and he suspected he'd be punished for sparing her. Laezel killed her family members as a school project, while Shadowheart would've had no problem killing anyone to gain a higher rank. Of course Tav can influence Laezel and Shadowheart with great effort, but Wyll's choice was his. Wyll would've been a great leader for the group.

Your impressions of Astarion and Gale are prefect lmao I have a headcanon explanation of why the companions perceive Tav as the leader. The companions' tadpoles perceive the player's tadpole (be it a custom or origin character) as the "alpha" of the group, so they submit to it on a subconscious level. Tav is always influencing their minds even without trying or them being conscious about it. That could also explain why they they're all ready to jump your bones so early on and it's so easy to make them like you despite their complicated personalities.

As someone who’s worked closely with dogs, this really feels spot on. They need an experienced, firm…and I cannot stress this enough…PATIENT hand to acclimate and train them. Could also see him as a husky. He won’t sing you the song of his people but he’ll sure as sh*t complain nonstop about the slightest inconvenience. Personally, Karlach as a Golden is just *chef’s kiss* perfect. Goldies can be surprisingly mean (but rarely for long) when they lose patience, and they throw their weight around like the clowns they are. I mean this is the most affectionate possible way. I can also see Karlach doing Nala stomps and it’s the best image my brain has concocted all day. Sweet, sweet serotonin. Rotties also fit her pretty well-affectionate, scary-looking but ultimately communicative and very sweet once they get used to you. Tossing 90+ lbs of pure muscle around at you like a tire swing. He was self-righteous and wanted people to like him and admire him so he choose generally noble and good options. He wanted gold and power so he made deals with hags and devils, and was very mercenary in his dealings but only with those he thought had too much gold to spare. I think if this game was made into a show without the concept of the player being the leader, Gale would definitely take the role- external problems like his bugged approval system have mischaracterized him to be more desperate than he actually is, but he's very pragmatic and rational with everything and he's neutrally aligned, so he can kinda bend either way as long as it gets the job done (although he doesn't like unnecessary bloodshed). It seems canon too, looking at all the animated shorts they've made with Gale being the one to lead the way and narrate their journeys. However, he'd still have to go through his arc of overcoming his power-imbalanced exploitation from Mystra, just like all the other companions' traumas.

Astarion darling but i am also a warlock with a archfey patron. Yes you have a dommy daddy, but at least arch fey also want chaos. But your also a bard and can talk your way out of trouble. A leader if i ever saw one.

Yea Karlach took my role within the group. I wanted to be the head empty, but secretly smart, head in the clouds one. But Now I'm just "mom" and I'm constantly yelling "I will turn this car around". Having durge be group leader says a lot about the rest of the squad doesn't it? Going around fixing the party's emotional baggage and I can't even remember who the fuck I was and why I have the desire, the NEED, to literally paint the town red. 😂😂

I remember someone saying without Tav or Durge, Gale is written like the defacto leader, hence some of the lines of you end up romancing him...intentionally or not

So basically, Tav is the leader because they aren't a traumatized vampire, a kamakazi wizard, or an amnesiac cultist

Really like, I remember having gathering all the companions, and after I saw that even Wyll had bad news coming my way, I really thought: Man! Why do I have to either be the leader of 6 ticking time bombs (1 of them literal) or die alone?! This stresses me out XD

My drow Tav seconded this confusion. Until he had Shadowheart, Gale, and Astarion in the ruin, and realized none of them knew how to fight effectively as group (50% is just how I characterized him as a strategist to begin with, 50% was watching the cast play dnd. Tav will now always be the strategist in my brain). His second is Shadowheart, partly cause he found her first, partly cause she is super level headed and devious. I imagine she encourages him play things smart, instead of just intimidating his way though everything. I like to imagine she is his general emotional anchor, gives good advice, etc. Not romancing her, they just like to drink wine and silently judge everyone together. He romanced Astarion, for the same reasons Astarion did, and now they both have feelings they did not plan for and don't know how handle lol

Meanwhile cut to my Tav: "So what you're saying is, if I become a mind-flayer, I'd have just all this power *on top of* whatever skills, powers, and magic I already have as long as Orpheus remains sealed?" The Emperor: "Yes, that's exactly what I JUST finished describing to you in explicitly wordy detail." "Sign me up!"

I think its because Tav is the first one who wanted to team up, making that offer to them all puts a label on Tav. They're the one who convinces them to join up so they look to Tav first. Gale is too inexperienced with the physical space and is violently short lived. Wyl is one of the few non-scoundrels but also a major altruistic hero (which most of them will find tiresome as in liezels words he is a and contracted to a demon who wants him to hunt karlach, which puts off the others. Karlach's is loved by everyone but is also short lived and doesnt seek leadership. No one will trust Astorian even if he wasnt a vampire. Laezel alienates people with her attitute and is a Gith, plus has a conflict with Shadowheart. Shadowheart hardly remembers herself, is mysterious ontop of that and has a conflit with Laezel. Tav is the only one they are willing to trust as all the others have an agenda except to keep their eye on the ball of curing their affliction and mediating their internal issues. As a result Tav is the one who acts as an emotional anchor for them all. They THINK the Durge contains the same qualities initially but by the time they realize what the durge actually is, they're already invested in the dynamic and Durge's actual leadership qualities stand out, to their benefit and their bane. (Act 3 spoilers) In a situation where both arent present (in a durge run its hinted they killed tav for investigating a string of serial killings they commited and in a Tav run, Durge leaves for baldurs gate by themselves weakened and alone, falling pray to Orin. You can find their body in one of Orin's chambers. In an Origin scenario where you lay as the companion, both situations occur and your chosen companion is thrust into the position and has to make due, but your agenda clashes with the others and complicates things. rather different scenarios can occur.

Where does it say that Durge goes to Baldur's Gate? Playing as Tav, you simply find his corpse with Orin, and that’s it. I understand why the developers didn’t include him as a companion, but to make such a small reference to him... I don’t even know...
