Look at Paul clapping at the end, such huge respect for Art's singing! I heard an interview many years ago with Paul Simon where he said after he wrote the song, he knew that Art had to sing lead on it because he's one of the greatest singers ever. And he was right.

This is undoubtedly one of the greatests duets ever. But what Paul Simon does at the end elevates this performance into the musical genius level. Paul, after finishing the final harmony, withdraws to allow Art Garfunkel to use his God-given incredible vocal talent to take the song into the stratosphere. It's so generous from Paul but he knows that, even though the song is a duet, the finale requires a really powerful solo. Pure class. Love them both.

This song rings almost every emotional bell in my tired old body. When I was a Light Weapons Infantryman in the Army in 1970, along with thousands of others, I listened to this song and wondered what it would be like to have to use my M-16 on another human being. I'm so thankful I never had to find out. Since that time I have forgotten how to kill but I have never forgotten this song.

In April 2020, when the streets went silent, shut in a little apartment just me and my cats, not sure if opening a window would harm me, my phone my only connection to the world, in the dead of night this song drifted through the smallest crack of my window, thinking how this song perfectly fit this time all these years later, giving the smallest sense of calm and knowing I'm not alone in my thoughts. Millions were with me but millions also died. Giving thanks to life in 2023 and thanks to the All Mighty One who provides and decides.

Simon and Garfunkel. Sony and Cher. The Beatles. I basically grew up with them in my ear. So their break ups bothered me, always have. I was 15 when these two called it quits. Since, The Sounds of Silence, it's been clear that Simon was the songwriting powerhouse of this duo. Still, Art had some beautiful vocals that were never more front and center than on this song. Bridge Over Troubled Water gives me chills!
