That's been a common fault of Gareth throughout his reign. He took a squad of 26 but was only likely to seriously use 16 or 17 of them. The rest were there just to make up the numbers. And he is tactically not good enough, no question ...he reacts too slowly when things aren't going well, and makes baffling, head scratching substitutions.

@James SomeGamerGuyUK I like Foden, but he was having a limited impact on the game, Rashford should've been brought on to replace him earlier to have a crack at the French full back Kounde. Who's to say he couldn't have caused the same problems for him as Saka was giving to Hernandez on the other flank. Sterling scored against Iran, but in general, his form's being poor recently.

Agree with Simon, the next manager has to be a proven, serial winner. Southgate is not that, he's just a lukewarm, feel good manager that tries to create an amicable, non confrontational environment. The media loves Southgate because he has got the playing group "united". The point of the game is to win, not be back home after the quarterfinals. A manager with a solid track record, steely edge and winning mentality. Southgate ain't that, he's just a PR darling, and then the media try convince the public that "he's on the right track, we're getting there" nonsense.

@LeonWillBeatUsman So where would this serial winner be coming from if that whole serial winning thing obviously doesn't translate? Eriksson came here with the reputation of fashioning a Serie A treble, Southgate's bettered him TWICE and that's not including the '19 Nations League. Seems to me that folk are in a rush to get back to where we were seven years ago, in the vain hope that it'll somehow make us serial trophy collectors all of a sudden.

You nailed it. Deschamps is ruthless. He is the guy who kicked Cantona and Ginola from our team in 98. Won the world cup as a player. He got rid of Benzema in 2018. Won the world cup. Every player is at risk with him. And they know it. No one is superior to the team. He supports the guys, but don't mess up or he'll get rid of you. And look at his career. He won everything (except the Euro). Top choice as a manager. Southgate seems to be a nice guy.

I don't like getting on him for 96, because it can genuinely happen to anyone. But he just doesn't learn. His mistakes in big games - being reactive, failing to make changes soon enough, panicking and making ridiculous substitutions which contradict who is playing well and which areas of the pitch need improvement - were repeated in that France game, just as they were repeated against Italy from the Croatia game. We've given him chance to learn, but he's thrown away 3 pivotal matches where his lack of management acumen cost us going further in / winning tournaments. Can't keep excusing his failures just because he's improved the average of England performances. He will not get us over the line in tournaments - with him, we will always be stuck getting relatively close but falling at the biggest hurdles because he's scared to change the system or play to our strengths.

Even great players miss penalties though (ask David Beckham, Michel Platini, Roberto Baggio, Alan Shearer etc.). Part of the problem is that the best penalties, i.e. the hardest ones to save, are those closest to the woodwork and are therefore only a few inches away from missing the goal altogether.

The FA and some England fans are so used to losing that it's become their norm. Now, reaching the quarterfinals or semifinals is considered progress. He won a couple of league cups in his playing days which are sadly the only major trophies to his name… you have to go back to ‘82 to find a World Cup winning manager who hadn’t won major domestic or international trophies as a player or manager I’m afraid, so it would suggest that yes it helps massively having that pedigree… mourinho is not a good measure for the norm, & he was under the tutelage of Bobby Robson at Barcelona as a translator at a very young age, before he even got his coaching badges, so his coaching training was the highest pedigree even if his playing days weren’t…

I've been going in hard on Southgate over the past few weeks but I'll give him one thing - he turned the ship around and got us consistently going deep into tournaments, but along the way he has made far too many mistakes that simply didn't make any sense, my new favourite being bringing Jack Grealish on a minute before the end of stoppage time! What is that going to achieve? That's the sort of thing you do when you're winning 2-1 and you want to try and waste a bit of time! Southgate has taken the England team to a much better level than it was in 2016 under Roy Hodgson, he has made players want to play for England and he has made the nation fall back in love with the national team, but he's now reached his ceiling. We can't be having these same discussions in eighteen months' time when we get knocked out in the semi finals by France or Spain. It's been six years - a period where we should've won at least one tournament; that Italy team were there for the taking and we should've gone for the throat. That's the problem with Southgate - he doesn't have that killer instinct and he plays favourites too much. 2024 will mark the rise of the "Golden Generation" to their prime years. We need to have a manager in place with the steel, ruthlessness and tactical know-how to take advantage of that.

Just one observation that no one dares makes. Before the French game (as with all the others) we got down on our knee. We got down on our knee before the French. Please note the French team did not do this - they stood and watched, including all their players of colour. Want to know why England always start slow? Because they've psychologically belittled themselves before the opposition 2 mins before, that's why! In a game of small margins what huge margin does this convey to the French - and unconsciously to the English players? Why do the new Zealand rugby team do the Haka before a match? To declare war! But we get down on our knees. This team will never discover any form of killer instinct whilst it spends its whole time grovelling, apologizing and embracing every fake-woke agenda. Southgate should go because he is more committed to woke propaganda than he is to winning tournaments. Join the Greens or the Tories or Labour or someone else who wants to do damage through fake conformity politics, but please leave our football team alone!

"We were the better side" typifies the delusion of the English fans and press. Firstly no you weren't the better side in either half. You were the more attacking side in the second half but France easing off a bit was as much a reason for that as anything else. Secondly you failed to score from open play for the second time (in just 5 games) this tournament against the two best teams you played. Not a coincidence. "better side"? you're having a laugh

The fact he played a out of form Mason Mount over James Maddison when he was available. Not even a SINGLE MINUTE. And how he shoe-horns Foden into positions that don't suit him. Just because "I can't leave either out, they're so talented." Maddison does circles around Mount. And there is only a 2 year difference between them. So you can't use the "well he's a youngster, so you gotta be patient" excuse. Cause Lingard's been a "young talent" for the last 10 yrs according to MU fans. Look at him now.

The English sporting mentality is still dogged by the notion of "gentlemanly amateurism" and the spirit of Kipling's famous poem "If" which has the line, "If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same". I think Southgate tries to live up to this gentlemanly ideal and so does the FA. Thats why they can just blithely announce that they want him to stay on without so much as a post tournament inquiry as to what went wrong instead of having an honest heart-searching analysis which would show that Southgate lacks the tactical ability to change a game while its on. Southgate is a good man and he was great at dealing with the racist fallout after the Euros loss - pity he didn't send on Rashford et al after 60 minutes when they might have won the game in normal time and so avoid the shootout altogether -but all that cant remove the fact of his tactical limitations that stop him from being at the sort of level that wins international titles. Sorry for going on but Im really concerned that if Southgate stays we can kiss goodbye to any Euros title in 2024.

I certainly remember Germany in 2002. Croatia in 2018. I even remember Ghana in 2014 and they were quarter-finalists. This 'win or else' mindset is nonsense. The FA are why England will struggle/fail to win a trophy. It shouldn't be in Southgate's hands. All Southgate is deciding is if he wants to remain as a manager in a high profile job. If he resigns, he won't ever manage another high profile international side or any club in top 5 league football. England should be giving English managers with a body of work that shows they can over achieve an opportunity. Sean Dyche and Dean Smith, they're not Howe or Potter level, but they're realistic appointments that have proven they can over achieve.

The underlying problem for England stems from the Premier where the great majority of decent players are foreign and the only decent English Coach is Eddie Howe who has greater ambitions than England. England needs an aggressive manager, being nice wins you nothing - Lampard does not fit the bill either. Mourinho might be a good candidate, and he would surely take it, but again the FA is too slow and Portugal will snap him up. In reality, England has the players, but not the management to win.

I've been saying it. If England keeps Southgate they need assistant offensive coaches. England can beat weaker opponents but need training and better tactics against equally or stronger matched opponents and I believe they can win tournaments. The offensive looked like they weren't totally sure how to finish their chances against France and that cost them more than the missed penalty imo

Exactly, they were lucky to beat above average teams back then. Southgate has brought unity and put the players feet firmly back on the ground. That's a huge a achievement for an English team that historically has an overwhelming hype and hysteria surrounding it.
