Tickets in the Birmingham Road end were first sold to WBA season ticket holders and then WBA members. The tickets that were left were then only sold to season ticket holders. It comes down to a WBA fan supplying a ticket to a Wolves fan. The Wolves fan was silly to celebrate but thats no excuse for dozens of fans to run down the stands to attack him and about 50 more to invade the pitch. Earlier in the game the Albion fans in the opposite corner of the ground were throwing bottles and coins at Wolves players and then at Wolves fans.

The fact that keeping supporters separate at all is considered a "safety" issue speaks volumes about the types of people attending matches.

@@TimBee100Franchise sports is different to what we have here, for better or worse. Many teams were created about 150 years ago by people from the local area. Wolves in this case by school boys from a local church school. My team by armaments workers in South London (as spurs fans won't let us forget). It's only in the last 30 years that teams have been bought by big businesses and individuals. As such, some football teams are key parts of the community and their history also embedded in the community. People feel like their football team represents their area and people. Also, maybe more here than in North America, people from different parts of the UK are already tribalistic. As a Londoner I'll get a lot of stick going north. Liverpool and Manchester don't particularly get along etc. Put that all together and it creates a lot of tribalism and tension that probably would mean it's unwise to mix fans. Also, that tribalism can create immense atmospheres that, I believe, are unrivalled in any other sport.
