I think what makes him compelling is that Gary is clearly not stupid. He's very quickwitted which makes his struggle to confront his own flaws, of which he is painfully aware of, all the more tragic.

As much as I agree that Gary is hilarious, when the twist comes towards the end, you see that it's literally just a cover Gary uses to cover up his real feelings. All of Simon Pegg's characters in the Cornetto Trilogy have an element of tragedy to them but Gary is easily the most tragic of them all. A liar, self-destructive, addicted, depressed, dismissive, general arsehole and yet HE KNOWS ALL OF THIS THE ENTIRE TIME. He hides his guilt purely with memories and nostalgia and had been doing it since they left school, slowly drifting apart from his friends and ruining his relationship with them to the point he's on his own going to AA and spending his days institutionalised because of his rapidly deteriorating mental state

That's exactly why this is my favourite Edgar Wright film, and Edgar is my favourite director of all time. Gary is funny and it is fun to watch him but he is so flawed that you sympathize with him and that final scene where he is desperate for that last pint really hits me "It's all I've got".

High Definition - It isn't just him breaking up with his partner; it's that he was such a workaholic that he never learnt to build real relationships with people, never had any friends and no-one liked him despite being the best at his job and in fact that was precisely why people disliked him. It's also why the entire town tried to kill him

You’re right. It even foreshadows this when Gary argues with his friends in the bar before the bathroom android fight starts. The Apocalypse saved Gary because he has nothing to lose and everything to gain. He’s already been separated from society, so a global collapse is less impactful on him than anyone else.

The Worlds End is one of the most perfect films ever made. Far superior to the other two films in the Cornetto Trilogy in every way, the depth of layers this film has is the reason for its brilliance. The characters, the story archs they go through are wonderfully done.

I honestly can’t decide whether I like Simon Pegg more is the straight man or the crazy man. I mean in both of the other films of the Cornetto trilogy he seems to be the one with the most sense (arguable for Shaun of the dead obviously) but here he is the one that is the crazy in the chaotic in the oblivious to the other people‘s feelings. So I honestly can’t decide which I like more.
@solcrac9445

It is my favorite role of his. Part of it is the subversion, yes, but I genuinely think Simon Pegg poured a lot of himself in the character to make him unique and managed to hit on something painfully real. He had huge struggles with depression and alcoholism in the late 00s and early 10s and I think that tinge of real trauma really worked to set Gary King apart and ahead of all his other characters. Imo of course

Tonight, we will be partaking of a liquid repast as we wind our way up the Golden Mile. Commencing with an inaugural tankard in The First Post, then on to The Old Familiar, The Famous Cock, The Cross Hands, The Good Companions, The Trusty Servant, The Two-Headed Dog, The Mermaid, The Beehive, The King's Head, and The Hole in the Wall for a measure of the same, all before the last bittersweet pint in that most fateful terminus, The World's End. Leave a light on good lady, for though we may return with a twinkle in our eyes, we will be in truth blind; drunk.

I personally feel this is how it was done. If you see Gary King was quite similar to Billy Butcher from the Boys except for the comedic parts.
