As much as I agree that Gary is hilarious, when the twist comes towards the end, you see that it's literally just a cover Gary uses to cover up his real feelings. All of Simon Pegg's characters in the Cornetto Trilogy have an element of tragedy to them but Gary is easily the most tragic of them all. A liar, self-destructive, addicted, depressed, dismissive, general arsehole and yet HE KNOWS ALL OF THIS THE ENTIRE TIME. He hides his guilt purely with memories and nostalgia and had been doing it since they left school, slowly drifting apart from his friends and ruining his relationship with them to the point he's on his own going to AA and spending his days institutionalised because of his rapidly deteriorating mental state

You’re right. It even foreshadows this when Gary argues with his friends in the bar before the bathroom android fight starts. I honestly can’t decide whether I like Simon Pegg more is the straight man or the crazy man. I mean in both of the other films of the Cornetto trilogy he seems to be the one with the most sense (arguable for Shaun of the dead obviously) but here he is the one that is the crazy in the chaotic in the oblivious to the other people‘s feelings. So I honestly can’t decide which I like more.

It is my favorite role of his. Part of it is the subversion, yes, but I genuinely think Simon Pegg poured a lot of himself in the character to make him unique and managed to hit on something painfully real. He had huge struggles with depression and alcoholism in the late 00s and early 10s and I think that tinge of real trauma really worked to set Gary King apart and ahead of all his other characters. Imo of course
