Simon, a bloke in the woods

In this video, I am in Wiltshire with Wilderness Survival Skills, taking part in the Hunter Gatherer Challenge, a four day, four night solo primitive survival challenge using very limited kit. Armed with just a belt knife, a folding saw, a billy can, 3 metres of paracord and a few essential emergency items, I head off into the forest to build a shelter and bed, make fire, forage for food, make a primitive hunting bow (including a knapped flint arrow head) and live as comfortably as I can using the natural materials found around me.
This is part two of the challenge, the last two days and nights. Day three and I’m feeling like I’m settling in to my woodland home - I have established routines and I know where to go to find certain resources and wild foods, my shelter is improved and I start to think about making life a bit more comfortable, starting with my bed. I also begin to make a primitive hunting weapon. One of the briefs for the challenge is to think about long term survival and to make a weapon capable of catching game in order to provide me with a protein rich diet available year round. My chosen weapon is the bow. A target contest along with the other participants gives me a chance of
‘winning’ edible prizes to add to the pot.
This challenge has been a thorough enjoyable and rewarding experience, I have learnt such a lot about primitive living, but also about myself and my capabilities. It has certainly be tough, both physically and mentally but after all it is a challenge! If anybody is looking for a challenge to test their existing bushcraft/survival skills in a controlled environment with the backup of an experience survival expert (and a bloody good bloke!) look no further than Joe O’Leary and his Wilderness Survival Skills School.
I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

The tempo and ambiance of his presentation and the interspersed locked off shots just observing life pass by is certainly reminiscent of the late, great Jack Hargreaves who I used to watch as a kid. Selfishly I'd prefer Simon to stay here as TV is far too much a medium of manipulation. I think we'd see too many concocted drama's. BUT for the greater good and to give a standing ovation to a thoroughly entertaining chap, yes I'd second your suggestion.

@@simonablokeinthewoods If you ever come over to the US, some place you might like for overnight or a couple days worth of wild camping is out in Royalston Massachusetts as you go past Orange MA. center. There's a nice area called Tulley Lake up there which's man made by the Army Corps of engineers but has multiple islands you can pull up on & camp out on. If you do, be careful of what I jokingly call "Ant Island", It's the biggest one out in the lake & @ the top, it seems the whole thing is a huge ant mound that has biting ants that look about the size of American carpenter ants but are white & black & don't seem to like anybody hanging around for long. As a bonus, you may find my ex GF's pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses up there which we believe the ants might've used for solar tech

@@simonablokeinthewoods Another place is Erving State Forest which is public camping but, not too sure what they allow for bushcrafting if any at all. This might be a place for a tent, but not one if those drive in campers with a toilet in it where there's no where to hook it up.( There are bathrooms & an 2 places for showering if you bring American quarters to spend on a hot shower, it only costs about 50 cents American) Only possible problems are 1- @ this moment, It's closed due to Covid BS. 2- it is an area for black bear & the woods go all the way into Vermont & / possibly Canada if you're up for a good hike.

Simon, the bloke in the wood. The man picks up and tidys up the woods, drinks nettle tea, shoots arrows and s###s in the wood. Brought back memories back in the days of my youth with wood fires, of putting potatoes directly on the camp fire embers. Tastes absolute lovely. lovely crispy skin. That was a very close call. It reminds of trek in rainforest. I heard a crack and falling branch thru the canopy but I couldn't see where it's coming down and for me to run away from. Standstill and hope for the best. Great video mister.

I really enjoyed this series very much. You did an awesome job throughout. I have never tried the bow drill. I have an idea where to start from KZbin videos, but from how much you struggled it does not look easy. Good job on conquering that task. It obviously meant everything to survive this challenge. Now I know that widow makers are serious business! I am glad it did not hit your shelter. Since I found your vlog, I have been following it for a while and have recommended it to others. Thank you for your content. I am learning a lot. Cheers, Doug.

Congratulations on completing the challenge and filming it whilst under duress. It is often a challenge in itself filming, but when you're cold, wet, under nourished, suffering from sleep deprivation and CONSTIPATED then that is a different kettle of fish. I learned the 'hard' way what 7 days of constipation can do to you, headaches, loss of appetite, not thinking straight. After four nights you moved on from Bushcraft to what Joe's Profile states, FIELDCRAFT. You have proven enough throughout your films that you can make almost anything out of nothing (I would never in a Million Years have thought of that Bow configuration,) albeit, many folk discover that they don't have enough 'Moral Fibre' to see it through whilst out in the elements and the going gets tough. I think these two films proved beyond any doubt that you have it in abundance. Also, an important point to all Preppers/Survivalists as depicted on the weighing scales, make sure you're able to notch your belt as you will lose Stones/Kilos. 10/10 from the Brit in Bulgaria Panel. Now, let's get back to some relaxing Canoe trips with Maggie baling overboard after Swans. 😉

I had the fun experience of being made homeless for around three weeks aged 17, luckily I grew up in coastal Cumbria, went to secondary school in North Yorkshire and had spent a large part of childhood playing in the local woods so I knew where I was going and had a plan for shelter, fire and water even before I'd set out. But this time it wasn't playing out, there was no going home when streetlights came on, and no mates whose Mother had done a packup for us, If I hadn't the skills and more importantly the will to succeed and survive, I have no doubt that I wouldn't have made it, The skills and techniques you learn on courses like this (and I gained from my childhood) stay with you for life, it's up to you to nurture and hone them but the knowledge you have reinforces your mindset immensely (Bowdrill anguish notwithstanding :-D) and increases your odds of not only surviving, but thriving longterm. The old adage about teaching a man to fish rings ever true. Oh, and I'm putting a fiver on the skull being a weasel or otter :-p
@simonablokeinthewoods

That reinforces the fact that we just never know when we really WILL need these skills! Good on you, I doubt many teenagers would have had the strength of mind to think k the way you did - most would head for the town centre and get into a whole world of downward spiralling misfortune! 👍👍 The skull was a badger - the ridge of his skull was the tell tale sign - so I’m told!

Simon, I believe that as time passes you will realize your four-day experience will benefit you in unexpected ways. One cannot help but have expectations as one goes into such an endeavor but often what is expected does not seem to unfold, as imagined, during and shortly after the experience. Something far greater will, over time, sprout and bloom and potentially enhance your life. It takes its time and comes in its own season. Many seemingly insignificant thoughts and feelings may lead to lots of things such as a heightened sense of gratitude, just for one small example. That is one of the more obvious ones, though. There is much more. I admire your courage and your great attitude in meeting and greeting the challenges. I felt for you and the withdrawal that you may have been enduring as you went without your delicious foods, your hot chocolate and your daily slab of beef with all the trimmings, not to mention that morning cuppa. When I camp, my morning cup of coffee is a religous ceremony. I cannot help but think that you will be rewarded. Thanks for sharing this.

I loved the foody bits om nom nom, haha, I really want to do this but ive been unwell for a few years and haven't had the stamina so i might give it a go when the weather improves, the bow and arrow looked awesome, i'd love to see the acorn meal process done properly if you ever do a wild food tutorial, what else can we eat?, i saw a vid on birch sap tapping the other day, that would have been a good calorie source :) take care, i look forward to the next one x

Thank you! A video on acorns is a really good idea - might do that, but probably next year now - the squirrels are out in force at the moment!! Birch sap is quite nice, like a tonic to cleanse the body and soul after the winter months! 😁

After watching so much; the crafting, gathering and cooking etc... What I get from your videos the most, (and that I love the best) is that it feels SO rewarding. "Ancestral Living", I love that!

That branch that came down really deserved the name "Widowmaker". One of the few things I'm actually scared of when I'm out in the woods. Brilliant video as always Simon. Cheers!

When setting up camp they say look for the 4 Ws wind, wood, water, and widow makers. Glad number four didn’t take you out, loved the series and hope to get my skills to this level someday.
