Күн бұрын

In this video, I am in Wiltshire with Wilderness Survival Skills, taking part in the Hunter Gatherer Challenge, a four day, four night solo primitive survival challenge using very limited kit. Armed with just a belt knife, a folding saw, a billy can, 3 metres of paracord and a few essential emergency items, I head off into the forest to build a shelter and bed, make fire by friction, forage for food, make a primitive hunting bow (including a knapped flint arrow head) and live as comfortably as I can using the natural materials found around me.
This is part one of the challenge, covering the first two days. Part two will continue shortly.
The kit and clothing taken on the challenge will be covered in an upcoming video.
I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

Simon, thank for truthfully showing that starting fire with a bow drill takes time and effort! Too many others show a perfect 8-10 strokes of the bow and VOILA FIRE! BS. So I appreciate how you showed multiple attempts. And that your first lean-to was not perfect, just workable. Adding the various berries and herbs to the pot is also good. The liquid has most of the nutrients. Good vid, thanks.

No if he had made a dry area where even his mess ups fell in dry(as dry as he could) wood. He would have done far better. You can watch literally 3 cuts of him bowing right in a patch of wet grass. The 2 more literally on top of a patch. It takes time and he did well, but definitely has improvement in developing a fire environment.

The Bow Drill is a very different beast when you're tired, hungry and thirsty. Add the pressure of knowing that you absolutely must make fire and it can become a difficult challenge quickly. It only takes a couple of problems and you can feel your energy dwindling to nothing. Knowing that your chances are becoming smaller and smaller. Well done on getting it! Not many people are prepared to test their skills to this level. :) Great episode too!

Thank you Leigh!! Your book helped hugely - getting an ember is hard enough, I was really worried about my tinder too - everything was so damp - all that effort can easily be wasted when a damp tinder bundle sucks the heat out of your ember. Phew!!!! 😁👍🔥

Hi, Simon....I've been binge watching your videos for the last few days - enjoy them all - but this is the best one, yet.....It's inspired me to go out tomorrow night for a solo wild camp as I've Thursday and Friday off work. I've solo wild camped only once this year in the spring. As much as I'd like to give butchering a deer a good go, I'll be taking a pre packed steak from Aldis. 😆......Also, there's an awesome shelter already there at my disposal. 😃👌....Not that we're due any rain. 😁....I know I'm a bit behind, but keep up the great vids, and well done on this achievement/video, here. 👍

Very nice. Finally someone shows the hard work to find enough food in the bush to survive. Not being careful or knowing what your doing will have you using much more than you take in. You actually showed the big part of the day is spent foraging. Didn't see it but putting you pot out in the rain to catch water? Great video.

Tough test. You’re doing okay, better than most. The rain of the UK is much like the rain of East Tennessee. It makes shelter a challenge. The hazel is nice though. You were fortunate to get some venison. Too bad about the water. Nice to see you out again. Thanks for sharing and working hard to video. We all know the videography makes the test just a lot tougher. Interested in Part II. TEXAS

What a great challenge Simon the close shaves are part of the adventure . Me and a mate were hunting near skips hut in the whirinaki forest New Zealand it was still with no wind when a loud crack like lightning split the air as we both stood still in the following silence a new noise started as a tree 4 foot across and 100 foot high crashed down through the forest 50 meters from us awesome nature at its most impressive display of regeneration one of many great experiences. Thanks for sharing yours.🙏

Granted, no tree fell that I knew of, but around 12/29/19, there was an ice storm that hit & I helped a friend of mine clear their driveway. There were 3 MASSIVE (& sounding like the apocalypse) style thunderstrikes. Someone mentioned "thundersnow" which I never heard of before, but I gather it's possibly pretty dangerous. Sure sounded that way

Good stuff there Mate! You can't go wrong with a Zebra cooking pot! The inner pan alone is worth it's weight in gold! Next time you are passing a Sainsbury's have a look at the mesh drawstring bags meant for loose goods they are currently replacing plastic ones with. They are very lightweight, handy sized and fine enough to squeeze hawthorn berries through, possibly even for filtering water. Good size for foraging too if you bend a thin nut stick round the top to hold it open. Looking forward to part two!

Once again, you disproved the old adage: "where there's smoke, there's fire!" I cannot see Andy taking on this type of challenge; the food is substandard. It takes an unbelievable amount of energy and determination to forage and process just a bit of food. 'Aspiring Caveman' on KZbin gave me an interesting idea in his video about building a long-term shelter: his chimney would have made a tube shelter very quickly in a hazel copse. He made a rake that easily produced a lot of duff for roofing and insulating. Much of the FUN in watching how Blokes like You meet these challenges in thinking about what we have found and how OUR conjectures might apply. At the end of this challenge, YOUR insights about the process would be fascinating.

Thanks James, I’ll have to check out ‘Aspiring Caveman’. It was all a lot of effort, but hugely rewarding. 👍

Watching you doing the friction fire, makes me really appreciate the necessary point of having everything ready for you're fire. It would be devastating to expend all that energy, getting an ember and then not having the tinder to keep the ember going. Well done in deed. I wouldn't be almost as comfortable as you.

Preparation is vital mate - been caught out before, rushing to get aflame before I was really ready! 🔥

👏🏼 that was brilliant. It was good to watch you under pressure where the stakes are a bit higher. I don’t mean that in a horrible way, haha, I mean to see how you work and think. I especially liked the foraging parts of it, it appeals to me for some reason, eating from natures larder. It looked tough but the kind of tough that makes you feel more alive! I can’t wait for the next episode 👏🏼

Wow, that challenge looks fairly intense! Great perseverance on getting the fire going. I’d say the sense of accomplishment after a course like this is totally satisfying. Really looking forward to part 2, but Jaysus! That branch!
