How many of you watching took Home Economics in High School? I would love to hear about it in the comments. Extra points if you remember what you made in class. 😜

sewing wise it was a gingham apron, skirt, and a-line dress .... food wise, cookies, hamburger gravy, sloppy joes, muffins.....ran across a folder of home ec recipes from the 1970's, LOL. I think schools today should reintroduce these basic life skills.
@lylymongeon Жыл бұрын
I did home ec. I remember making blueberry muffins and some cake. And for sewing I mad a skirt. Took me forever but I passed both classes with a good grade. I love cooking and sewing to this day, Mom had taught me before taking the classes but it certainly reinforced the attraction by learning the basics of how to read a recipe, chopping skills and learning to read patterns, difference in stitches, etc. My daughter took cooking as well but it was an elective and after class course, not part of regular curriculum.

Yes, it was required when I was in school, I don't think it is taught anymore and the kids today really need it!

We had Home Ec. in middle school. We made monkey bread and mac & cheese !

I took Home Ec in Junior High. Seventh grade was sewing and eighth grade was cooking. I just remember making toast in the broiler. I homeschooled my 3 boys and taught them Home Ec. They all know how to cook and do basics around the house. The youngest though really embraced it and now designs and sews costumes for his cosplay events. I didn't really learn to cook well until I met my mother in law when I was 19. She was Spanish and grew up on a ranch in New Mexico. She and I spent many hours together in our kitchens for the next 35 years. I miss her so much. Your recipes remind me of her. Thank you!

I really enjoyed reading your comment. That's awesome that you taught your boys Home Ec. These skills are so important.

Hi Marcy, I had Home Ec "cooking and sewing" in Jr. High in 69 & 70, then later in a Continuation H.S. It was a different time back then. I still remember those years, good memories. 😊

Those really were great years, and such practical classes! I took sewing, as well. I remember making a pair of pleated pants and a flannel shirt which I wore for the longest time. I still love cooking and sewing to this day. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

Oh my goodness, this was the first cookie I learned to make when around 4 or 5 years old. My Grandmother taught me. I grew up in southern Indiana, French ancestry, my Grandmother's recipe used butter, added orange zest to the batter and used the juice of the orange to make icing, just icing sugar, zest, and the juice. She also cooked her carrots first, then mashed them before incorporating into the batter, I still make them sometimes. Great for teas in the afternoon. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

I loved Home-Ec, I learned how to sew from them!! I don't remember much cooking but it's still taught in school! The cookies looked yummy!! Great Job!

That's so cool that you learned how to sew. And it's good to know Home Ec is still taught in school. I figured classes like these would be among the first to go with so many budget cuts.

These look delicious. I want to take a treat to an elderly friend this week, and these will be perfect. Thank you! Also, I happen to have exactly the same hand mixer (color and all) that you are using. I like it because it really does have a low speed.

I'm glad the timing worked. These really are yummy and so simple to make. Also, love that teal color. I have an emulsion blender that color, too. Thanks for watching!

My friend had home ed in the mid 90's. She shared her food creations with us, I remember some good green, blueberry muffins. The carrot cookies are a great idea! I have a carrot cake recipe from my grandma, I think it calls for baking soda and lemon juice on the grated carrots, makes the carrots different, maybe a little tangy, I don't know. I was going to say, that I made your meatloaf last night. I think our consensus was less bleu cheese next time but overall delicious. My dad had two helpings, which is great because he hasn't been eating all his dinner lately. :)
@marcyinspired1442 Жыл бұрын
I LOVE carrot cake. I haven't heard of putting lemon juice on the grated carrots, but I've heard of too much baking soda turning carrots green. I wonder if your grandma added the lemon juice to prevent that from happening. Guess you'll have to make the recipe to find out! Yum! I'm thrilled you made the meatloaf and that your dad enjoyed it even if it had more bleu cheese than desired. I hope he continues to have an appetite. Give him my regards.

Some schools still offer home ec, now it is generally called Family Consumer science! Sadly, it is a program that often gets cut and its really, really hard to find teachers in that area. I am going to make those carrot cookies!
@marcyinspired1442 Жыл бұрын
Family Consumer Science. I had not heard that. That's interesting. And also sad that it's not in every school. These life skills are so important. Thanks for the update, and for watching. Hope you enjoy the cookies.

In the late 70's I took in Jr. High School. 6th, 7th and 8th grade. Sewing, Cooking and woodworking/shop. Currently in school they are not teaching these wonderful skills except if you wanted to take up a trade such as culinary. We even had a class to teach you how balance a check book and they are not teaching that either.
