Great video, apart from throwing away good dough! Just roll into a ball then roll it and bake. You get an extra, albeit, maybe mis-shapen, oatcake! Just eat that one with your eyes closed! 🧀😋

i NEVER chuck left over dough into the bin. I made a wee one, just for me, privilege of the cook. I'm Scottish but live in France so you can't find store bought oatcakes, but as you say, they're so easy to make. I eat mine preferably with cheese and add a nice topping of Branston pickle - homemade by the way - heaven!! So oatcakes are made, after a cuppa, getting down to making shortbread, another Scottish treat that'll be on the table at Christmas. Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy New year to all. A big thanks to Cheryl for giving us such great recipes.

So wonderful! I can't have plain flour so I used finely ground almond flour. Kept everything the same and used a smaller cutter (didn't have a 6mm one), turned out devine! Topped them with cheddar, poached egg, tomato, avocado and onion, salt and pepper with a thin slice of ham. My husband was so excited! We both just loved it. Thank you!

I never usually leave comments but after trying several different recipes for oat cakes, this recipe is by far and way the best I have come across. I have been trying unsuccessfully to replicate my favourite commercial brand for smooth oatcakes and this recipe not only comes very close but the oatcakes taste so much better. I suppose purists wouldn’t add flour to the mix but I think it adds so much to the texture. I didn’t have enough butter so used the equivalent in rapeseed oil. The flavour was excellent. Thank you from a grateful Scot.

Hello from Seattle in the USA. I was so happy to discover your channel a few days ago. My nana, who emigrated from Aberdeen to Vancouver Canada immediately following WWI, always had fresh oatcakes on hand and I loved them. She made many delicious, simple meals and treats. Buying Scottish oatmeal here in the States used to be difficult, but it’s much simpler now, what with the Internet! Thank you for sharing your recipes, stories, kitty, and humor. Happy new year!

Thank you for posting this. I tried your recipe last week and have been enjoying eating the oatcakes, especially with butter and honey as a snack. They are great with soup like you said. They have a good texture although a bit dry. They don’t have much flavor eaten plain. I tend to experiment and modify almost every recipe. In the batch I made today I substituted a gluten free flour blend that I grind myself. I mix different grains together to make things more nutritious. Today I used a blend of Garbanzo bean, millet, flaxseed, sunflower seed and buckwheat flours. Due to adding too much water, I ended up adding a bit of regular flour to get them to the right consistency to roll out. This batch turned out very flavorful. Delicious 😋

I'm going to try this. I've been looking for a nice recipe to use oats. Edit: I just made them and they turned out great. I used coarse oatmeal and oat flour instead of the all purpose and that works fine too. But I'm a lazy person, so I rolled out the dough in a rectangle inside a folded piece of baking parchment and then cut the dough in 10 equal sized pieces. Worked wonderfully as well. They give a nice bit of energy. Good for in-between meals as well when you need something. Good healthy alternative!

I made these carefully following the recipe except that I replaced the wheat flour with gluten free flour and they turned out delicious. There is actually no need for parchment paper since they have enough butter not to stick on any regular oven tray. (I baked mine on an enameled tray). The only problem is that they won't last long since once you take a bite there is no going back.

It is not a big deal though because to break them down to a finer grind; I have heard to just need to give them a quick and short wiz in the food processor. It won't stop Me from trying this Yummy-looking recipe. As I have never heard of these before I have one question for You, "Can these be sweetened and not only be used in savory dishes?" Mine were yummy, but a little bitter... Have you got a solution for that? To be honest for the flour part I used mostly oat flour and just a little bit of spelt flour, because I don't digest gluten very well. What's maybe nice to know is that I succeeded in making them in a frying pan with a thick bottom, covered with a lid on low fire. I turned them halfway. So that's possible.

I found these too salty and a bit bland. I did use unsalted butter. Next batch I may try 1/3 the amount of salt and add a teaspoon of sugar! I did miss that they were 6 CM and made them 6". When I make these I make a huge batch like 100 of them! that way I can freeze them and then seal them in my FoodSaver vacuum sealer and have old cakes for 6 months or more. I need to have my home care person when I have one listen to what I tell her to do and I check and I can demonstrate but it's too difficult for me to roll the dough. That's why I make so many because it's a revolving door here with Home Care they are all from Africa and think they speak the language and don't understand much of what I say. :-(

My Aussie wife came in said she doesn't talk like you! I said no, she's from Ayrshire and I'm from Aberdeenshire, opposite corners!

I measured the ingredients exactly but found I need much, much more water than you stated. They were delicious though. Many thanks.
