Very easy to follow. Reminds me of how a neighbor taught me how to make pie crust when I was younger, except for the addition of the egg, vinegar, and rolling on wax paper. I'm working to sharpen my pie skills and have seen a few videos with varying techniques. Why didn't you refrigerate the crust before baking? I've seen some videos calling for it. But your technique is the way I learned when I made my first crust. Thank you and Merry Christmas.

I just made pie crust, and I had an awful time. I wish I had watched this video first, because it pointed out several things I did wrong, including using just two cups of flour, and not working it in the bowl long enough. I did use the wax paper method, which probably saved my crust from being a total fiasco. I am going to save this video, and try again soon. Thank you for posting this; I will report again after I try again.

How long do you bake the crust before you add filling?
@MoneySmartFamily4 жыл бұрын
Oh boy, did I leave that part out? If it's a one crust pie, bake your bottom crust for around 10 minutes, til lightly browned. Make sure you put pie weights on the bottom. (they are a string of metal beads) - We use ones similar to these that are on Amazon: amzn.to/3fcuryt

Does look real easy to make an i have never ever made my owm crust but have been saying i am i am lol. I do have a quik question again remembering i hsve never made my own crust... Question is or maybe this is a combo question with comment... The dough looked dry when u were forming it into that ball.. Am i rite that maybe another drop of that Cold water would have made it more manageable to roll? Please reply if possible. Oh an was it Lard or Shortening that u used? Is it ok to make it with Real Lard like i already have or even regular shortening or Oil instead of Crisco( if thats what u did use?) Thank u for sharing an I will let u know if i made it when i do. Hoping to make a pie for Xmas which again i have never ever made a homemade pie etc.
@MoneySmartFamily4 жыл бұрын
You can certainly play around with this recipe. lard, shortening, crisco, margarine, or even butter could work. And adding a little more water is fine. Get it to the consistency you like, then roll out. If it sticks to the pin too much, sprinkle with flour.
@patdyer50383 жыл бұрын
Don't know if you remember a brand of shortening in a red can called "Spry" ! Very old recipe was for their "Fool Proof Pie Crust" which my mom made and I still make: 2-1/4 Cups Flour plus 1 Teaspoon of Salt mixed together in a bowl, 1 Tablespoon Milk added to 1/4 Cup Boiling Water, 3/4 Cup + 2 Tablespoons of Shortening. DIRECTIONS: Using a pastry blender (I use something old that is called a "Thing A Ma Jig" looks like a wide spatula with slots in it and was very popular in the 50s and 60s) put shortening in a bowl and add the boiling water/milk mixture and whip rapidly until all is incorporated and the shortening looks creamy. Add the dry ingredients of flour and salt mixture to the wet ingredients. Mix all of it together, first with a pastry blender and then use your hands to get dough into a nice ball. Makes a 2-crusted pie. Divide the dough into 2 pieces making 1 slightly smaller than the other (Larger ball for bottom crust / Smaller ball for top crust. Smash them down a little so that they are disk shaped, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes or so. Roll out as shown in the above video except use parchment paper instead. The parchment paper is larger so there is no overlapping of sheets and the dough does not get veiny from the wax paper. Ta Da - That's It ! I love the MoneySmartFamily video since it is so nice to see someone else making pie crusts other than myself and it so relaxing. I loved the nice way the dough is crimped -- mine never looked as nice as theirs -- I have to work on the technique !

Can this be blind-baked and used for quiche? This looks so much less fussy than any other crust I've seen, and as a mom with a toddler...this makes me excited to try it!

I have never heard the term blind baked. If you mean make a quiche without precooking the crust, then yes you can.
@emullinsstreams3 жыл бұрын
@@MoneySmartFamily I mean pre-cooked! Sorry, I've heard it called blind-baking, par-baking, and pre-cooking. 🤦🏼♀️

thankyou for your video I just have 2 small issues I think you overworked the dough a bit that makes it tough. Also you should chill the dough for at least a half hour before rolling out.

Is this leaf lard or just regular lard? Also what if I have super hot hands? 😱
@MoneySmartFamily5 жыл бұрын
This is regular lard. If you have hot hands, maybe you could have a larger bowl of ice water to dip your hands in to cool them off.

In Step 5, about how long were you working the dough until it came together like that? It looks like you cut out some of the video to jump to the point where it looked good. I'm curious because other recipes warn you about over working it. Thanks
@MoneySmartFamily6 жыл бұрын
This pie crust recipe does fine no matter how much you roll it out. So you don't have to worry about overworking it. It's not a very flaky crust, but it is delicious.
@dcwatashi2 жыл бұрын
Most people chill the lard before putting it into the flour. And the majority of people also put the dough in the refrigerator first before rolling it out

Hmmm. We've never done that, but can see the value in it. Thanks for sharing.
