When using the DC4 (or any other sharpening stone) out in the woods, a neat trick is to carry a couple small nails that you can hammer into a downed tree (or tree stump) to keep your sharpener in place, thereby freeing both hands to hold the blade and keeping your fingers out of the way. I think I learned this from watching Ray Mears, but I don't remember exactly...
@walterpalmer27498 жыл бұрын
Joe, also use s "sharpie" and black out (ink) the blade edge , then file and sharpen allowing the ink to reveal those otherwise omitted areas. Does a nice job also.

Do you ever soak your stones? You said you felt like the middle of the stone was losing its grit, and soaking it can tend to get rid of that material that has embedded itself in the stone. Water, kerosene, thinner, diesel... I'm pretty sure they will all do the trick, but once you choose one, you gotta stick with the same liquid. Just a thought! Been loving your videos.

The edge angle on that axe could easily be cut in half and still be plenty durable for what you use it for. That would make it a much nicer tool to use and sharpen.

Hi Joe, thanks for doing this video on my request! I have a few questions: Is there a chance I will do more harm than good if I don't do this perfectly? I see that you do it rather quickly and don't seem too overly focused and concerned about getting the angle just right as you sharpen it. Am I being way too nervous about sharpening? Is this a practice makes perfect thing that I can just keep sharpening and sharpening until I get an edge? Or is there a chance that I will dull my blade or damage it to the point that trying to practice on it any longer would be pointless?
@josephallen198 жыл бұрын
+Daniel M I dont sharpen unless a knife really needs it, but yes, its just a practice thing...you will get a feel for it.

Dude, im watching this vid again and realized. Your strop leather is the same thickness as mine. But on the smooth side that I do not strop with, I gluesticked a piece of 2500 grit sandpaper. Do away with the mousepad. and then you have your hone and strop in the same piece. between that and DC4 you can handle any blade in the field. Convex, Scandi, Or regrind a scandi with microvex back to original geometry. Its so much kinder to a blade than the mouse pad. I have the 3k grit foam backed sandpaper from 3m, and its insanely difficult compared to leather backed sandpaper. It peels off easy to be replaced, and stays flexy if you need to roll it. etc. Better yet, I may just have to send you one. PM me your address on BCUSA if you want.
