No 3 of 3 songs from this TV appearence. GREAT! Fantastic! At this time Simple Minds was the best and coolest band in history. After the album Sparkle in the Rain they transformed from Simple Minds to Jim Kerr & Co. and turned into a booooooooooring standard rock band. Early Minds can never be compared to what they become after 1984.

I can't recall were this quote comes from but I think it is accurate; "Simple Minds managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of success." Such a remarkable and brilliant band up to the post New Gold Dream years. They had something dark and brooding that none of their peers matched. A perfect blend of electronics and traditional band which towered above everyone else.

Many peers matched their quality and dark mood... Echo and the Bunnymen come to mind. But that doesn't take anything away from SM. Unfortunately I only got to se them exactly when they turned to crap, 1984 I think. Whereas I saw Bunnymen at their peak.

I agree: Simple Minds were so fascinating until 1984. I mean their songs were atmospheric, experimental, creative...They were probably the best in the early 80's!

1984 corresponds more or less to Derek Forbes departure. Simple Minds were used to put some melodic atmospheres on Forbes basslines. When he left, the band became something else. The MIDI changed a lot of things during those times making the music clean and often boring.

They really were the best in the late 70's/Early 80s. 1984 is when the decline began unfortunately.

Picked up my bass again during our (NZ) lockdown & went through a bunch of Dereks classic bass lines. He was the reason I picked up the bass in the first place (along with early OMD) way back in the 80's. Still cant get it perfectly right but fun anyhow. Even tried to listen to 'Sparkle' to give it another final chance, but nup, still dont like it. Hope SM still come to NZ later this year with OMD.

Easy test, if a 'fan' thinks NGD is their first album then you know you're on the wrong track. very clear description that they ended up a stadium band, yet the first five albums are genius (can rarely say that about any band)
@theredraven
@theredraven 7 жыл бұрын
I don't get all the vitriol for Simple Minds post NGD. While the stuff after that certainly lacks some of the genius and magic, "Sparkle" and "OUAT" are both very solid albums. Even "Good News from the Next World" is a decent guitar driven album. Only album I really felt let down by was "Real Life" and even that has some tracks on it which are quite strong.

@@suz5862 You are ridiculous because you can't think of this : I knew Kenny was in the band in a short period of time but 1/as there was no date on the video it was hard to decide if Kenny was still there 2/ the image quality is too bad to recognize a specific drummer's face 3/ you have no life to not consider there are people who don't know 100% of anything about simple minds 4/ so that it makes you a social case, quite a mormon.
