I have built it (Stage I) on Java 1.12.2 and it did not work at the beginning. The observers were picking up no activity from note blocks. All the inserted items got stuck in the first dropper, the attached redstone clock was going on/off forever but that was all. I have solved it by replacing all of the note blocks by redstone lamps. Now it works like a charm. I really admire this elegant, flat and scalable design. Thanks for that.

That's a nice use of observer as an indicator when the sorter is running. Alternatively, if you're in experimental/snapshot version, you can also use crafter as indicator. Similar to observer, crafter also has blinking texture when it is powered. Got this idea from watching Xisuma in his Hermitcraft 10 Ep. 1159 (at around 5:48). There he put crafter on the floor as indicator when his storage systems are running. And because the crafter texture is similar to plank, it looks nice and subtle with his plank flooring.

I built this in my survival world, but it seems like whenever I add too many items at once, the filler items move through the hoppers. I'm using 20/21 paper per hopper depending on stackable/unstackable, but the first two hoppers don't seem to consistently hold the 20 items. As soon as the 20 paper moves through, the whole sorting breaks. Any ideas what might cause this?
@elhedran
@elhedran 20 күн бұрын
The first two slices (unstackables) also should have a different repeater setting for the lower repeater. It also would not deal well if built over a chunk boundary and was half loaded at any point. If all the repeater settings are right and it isn't a chunk loading issue then it must be something I haven't thought of. Worse case scenario is that there is something changing the in block update, update order between the to dropper and encoding hopper, the both fire in the same tick but the dropper needs to update first. If you work it out let me know please. Full transparency, I'm not using this in my survival world at the moment, and if I wanted an encoded multi item sorter would now look at cart based multi item sorters.

Good question. Most of the system is fine to back up a little, so as long as you don't spend a lot of time close to 10 chunks away, it will probably be fine. If it does get a lot of items backed up, some items may end up skipping the location they are meant to sort into. If it backs up even more (chests worth of items over an hour) the elevator will clog up and need to be unclogged by hand (e.g. items removed manually from the droppers)

@@bencekiss2341 if you are going to build a chunk loader, there are better designs out there. Also one chunk loader will fully load 9 chunks, and load chunks enough for this design over 25 (5x5) chunks. No, Tango and Etho use a set of chunk loaders in the nether activated by the minecart. It's more complex, but ensures the mail gets there sooner (the design in the video would wait until normal Hermit activity loaded the chunks). There is a chunk loading approach on my channel, but still isn't the same as on HermitCraft. Still a little slower in my channel as I wait for the cart to be allowed back through the portal, Etho and Tango break and dispense the cart to reset the timer.

A bucket of water would break the shulker emptier, but that is why there is a filter at the top of the elevator. This design does still need better pre filtering. @@gules3971 I think I know the one you mean. Not quite hopper speed when sorting unstackables but hopper speed for stackables. I've got an idea for a hopper speed separator, but will see whether Miazuma's fits better. An advantage of the Miazuma design is the shulker separator can be swapped for a chiselled bookshelf or brewing stand given shulkers are already separated in system 13.
@elhedran
@elhedran Ай бұрын
Yes, I think the Maizuma one is the one to go with, only with a chisled bookshelf instead of a shulker (so last silo is unstackable, and second last column is books, or potions if using a brewing stand). The fact it isn't quite hopper speed when dealing with unstackables shouldn't matter, would need something like 200 unstackable items in a row (or possibly more) in order to get it to back up across the entire silo sorter before it impacted the dropper elevator. Not sure who would rock up with an inventory of 200 unstackable items and expect to put it in a sorter. I'll think about doing an "optional extra" video some time - but almost certainly going to use it in the one on my survival world

Thank you for the system! I have a beginner-level question (I don't understand redstone all that well): if I just wanted to evenly distribute between 2 barrels using this system, do I just replace the barrel at 2:22 with a composter filled to 2? Also, I'm planning to use this for gold ingots at a gold farm, which I expect to trickle in (rather than go in a whole stack at a time). Does this work with that (either exactly or approximately)? The ultimate goal would be to have half the ingots from the farm go to an automatic piglin trader, and the other half to go to storage.
@elhedran
@elhedran 3 ай бұрын
Short answer, this is not the system you need. Mainly because of the trickle in part, you need a system with some sort of memory. I don't (currently) have any designs that for your needs. It certainly should be possible though.

Two questions. Is it ok if it only runs at 1.5 hopper speed (or slower if items come in slower) and is it ok if it keeps a buffer of 40 items in the first dropper. If the answer to both is "yes" I may have something that would work for you - assuming you haven't found something already on another channel. I remembered that I had something I only built in my test world that is a variation on this design: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqCxgpltjKh3edEsi=r8IIk86_r7QwVv70

On second thought, lets keep this simple. 2 barrels distribution just is hoppers under a double chest. Even (trickle items in) is the same thing, but locking the hoppers until there is detectably more than two items in the chest. elhedran-minecraft-public.s3.ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/simple_two_way_split.png It is possible to do with less of a buffer (variation on one of a dropper based smelter distribution) but honestly given the difference in complexity and given its connected to a farm, I'd go with the simpler design in the screenshot.

how well would this work with bamboo fuel? would the distribution be fast enough?

Auto crafted bamboo planks would work. Bamboo directly would need to pre fuel as fast enough is hard to do with a lot of furnaces. 4 bamboo per smelt at hopper speed is only (doing math in my head) 6 furnaces. I think it should be possible to reliable speed this up to one every 6 ticks instead of 8 which would make it a bit better for bamboo, but that still only gets it to maybe 8 furnaces. And given auto crafting is in the next version...

did you put items in the barrels? The redstone that locks the hoppers do so via the comparitors (sideways ones) acting as not-gates. If the redstone along the top isn't on, either some dust is missing, a solid block is transparent, or there is no input signal at the back of the not-gate comparitors. Which parts of the schematics are not matching the tutorial for you? I'm a bit lazy and generally either use the schematics for the tutorials or capture the schematics from the tutorials - it would be difficult for me to upload one that looked nothing like the tutorial. That said, mods change, minecraft changes, and even my own designs get updated occaisionally, so it isn't impossible there are some differences.

Pretty interesting! I like making unreasonably technical Minecraft contraptions, though I mainly play on older versions (say 1.12). If you ever implement this on a large scale -- that would be an interesting video for sure! Makes me think about how this could be integrated with other systems. This already could be used as 'just in time manufacturing' system, where you request a certain item by sending a particular minecart order and the factory producing the needed item sends minecarts of its' own to get more ingredients if it's short. Expanded enough, it could turn into a network of single-purpose factories that collectively could produce almost any item in the game. Though it would probably require a sort-of mail system, where the minecart unloads its' cargo at the factory that requested it, not just any factory. Otherwise some factories would potentially get stuck, never receiving their order. This video popped up as a recommendation (on the right bar) on SethBling's Typewriter video for me.
@elhedran
@elhedran 5 ай бұрын
It only works with a single delivery destination due to how holding unloading minecarts work. With this design if more than one factory needs sugar cane, it would need to use a named item as the filter instead. Either that, or a way for a receiving station to disable its filter if it's already unloading so that the matching minecart goes to the next receiver. I probably won't take this any further on my channel though. The next step up in just in time automation is a level of Redstone I just don't have time to do the builds for.

Small update - the update broke some of these - specifically anything in this video that is observer based probably doesn't work anymore. The crafter now takes a little longer from when it pulsed to actually craft, meaning the repeater isn't able to "merge" the signals anymore. The lamp now also takes a little longer to turn on, meaning in the sorting context it can get "flipped twice" when matching items and get stuck in the wrong state.

Turns out the "complex" design also works for dispensors. Just have the non-stackable go in first (for what would now be the empty slot). Some trickery around extending the duration of the clock to allow all the items from the hoppers to filter through, but not enough different to justify recording another video. Basically have the "on pulse" also trigger a fader circuit to hold the clock off instead of coming back directly via a repeater. In terms of being able to feed items into the droppers, can always put solid blocks with redstone on them over the solid blocks, between the droppers and the comparitors, this allows the droppers to feed into the side of the hopper hopper line to the crafter and allows hoppers to feed into the top of the droppers.
@elhedran
@elhedran 7 ай бұрын
The problem with publishing your working builds as they work is.... you learn of even simpler ways often not much later. Can't make the video now as I need to go to start work on my real job but... crafters output a signal of 9 when every slot is accounted for, and 8 or less when they are not. So a crafter ready to go (at least at this snapshot) will output a signal of 9. elhedran-minecraft-public.s3.ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/1+tilable+fill+crafter.png Same thing as the video, but 1 wide tilable and only using: 1 composter 2 comparitors 1 redstone dust 1 observer 1 crafter 1 barrel <and whatever input to the crafter is wanted. As for "not fill" recipes, you can lock the recipe by not pulsing the crafter should it become empty if you did. So it doesn't really matter what order the items go in, so long as the crafter isn't pulsed to the point of using up the last recipe it knows about. Which means if you have a single hopper, instead of waiting for the crafter to be "8", you could just wait for the feeding hopper to be "full". It buffers more items then you need to, but it would also ensure you could repeatedly craft the same recipe (of up to five input item types)
