Thank you for this video! I am a stroke survivor and hemiplegic. I've had terrible sciatica on my functioning leg for over a month. I've tried many stretches taught to me by physical therapists and they worked but only temporarily but then I followed this video a few times and my sciatica is so much better plus your exercises are easy to do so thank you so much!!

I am so glad I found this exercise. I can't quite put my left leg onto the other thigh yet, but I will get there with patience. As they say, prevention is better than cure. I had very painful Sciatica 15 years ago, and it lasted 5 years. Exercises wasn't part of my life at the time. As we age, we might not be able to do high impact exercises any longer, but we can certainly find plenty of exercises to suit us in Mike's videos.

Oh thanks Mike, I tuned in to get some ideas for my mother and wound up doing the exercises myself. It's interesting, my own mild sciatic pain seems to be related to how tight my muscles are. I had trouble with a few of the movements that were always easy before. I appreciate the inspiration!

Thank you for your help and video...I am 71 and recently have a tremendous problem with Sciatica in my Right hip....It has become so painful that I acan't function some days...More pain that I have ever experienced !!! Mike- My right side glutei and piriformis have been so tight. I don't have sciatic pain. I found this video. The glute and back of leg feels good afterwards. The stretch pulls on inner right groin muscle also which helps. Can you recommend other videos to stretch and/or strengthen this area? Thanks very much. I will also search thro additional videos of yours.

I am so thankful I have found these exercises/stretches for seniors. On the "Simple Stretches for Sciatic Pain" Mike does a back stretch seated whith his hands on his lower back and talks about doing the same stretch on the floor or standing. Where can I find these ?

I really like this and yet found that I sort of automatically rounded my shoulders. Here's what I did to stop from doing this. I put my hands on the underside of my chair and held on while bending forth. That stopped me from rounding my shoulders to keep my back straight. Thank you for this. I can easily see myself doing this regularly to help with sciatica. I appreciate you Mike. : )

Thank you for this stretches it lessened my pain considerably my hope is my pain will eventually be relieved as i do this stretches 5x a week. i still cannot do the piriformis stretch but i do a modified one where i bring my foot to the middle of my other leg and hold it there it is getting better i know by next week i should be able to bring my foot all the way up to opposite thigh. am hopeful.

Thank you so very much for this video. I'm experiencing sciatica nerve pain and the pain has been so excruciating until I felt like I was going to vomit several times. People say they can’t hear you but actually, you have an echo because your space is empty of rugs, drapes, etc. Would using a different mike, or new settings, or a muffler help the sound? I just found you a few days ago, and I’m going to stick with you. In my mid seventies, was in ICU THREE MONTHS ago and I have severe left leg pain in hamstrings and knee. Can’t bend the knee because of severe pain that burns also. Can’t get off a chair more than once lol. Where do I begin? I can do the upper body exercises. You teach just right. Not too fast and not too slow. So glad. God bless you.

Hey Patricia. Thanks for your comment Yes I think you're right in regards to the sound. Might turn the room into a giant cubby house to help with the sound :) Good to hear you're out of ICU . Have the doctors/Physiotherapist suggested exercises to do.? I suggest you work with someone considering your situation, until it improves. With the exercise, do a little bit and gradually increase this over time. As you stay consistent, you'll begin noticing differences in your movement, which will help with confidence and it will get better from there. Also make sure you balance the exercises with rest and recovery.

More Life Health Seniors thank you for replying to me. My recovery is going slowly, but that is because of my age and other health issues. I have been exercising since I am a teenager and so I know how critical it is to be consistent and not to overdo. I’m in good shape for my age, LOL, and I will eventually be in therapy with professionals here where I live. In the meantime I am keeping in shape as much as I can with your exercising plan. Can be many things Duff. Hard to know! Best to see your doctor or Physiotherapist in person.. Start with eating healthy, getting a good nights sleep every night and eradicating stress and add in some exercises and you'll feel a big difference!!

Hello Mike, my mother is 71 and facing sciatic pain. The pain is in the calf muscles till the ankle, she is unable to walk and absolute no pain relief whatsoever. Please suggest what can she do. She does not have any other medical conditions. Thank you very much

It depends what's causing sciatica. These exercises cause sciatica for me especially the first one as having foot forward and leg straight puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. The leg needs to be slightly bent.

Exactly this exercise tells you to have your leg in the right position before you even Lean Forward . the sciatic nerve can cause your lower back, your hips and your leg to be in awful pain but once the pressure is off of the nerve the right way then you have relief which I found that this exercise brought me the relief

Hey Rebecca, the first two will be ok. May need to bend the knee a little bit when doing the second stretch if you get pain when the leg is straightened. The third exercise you may find a little difficult. Can leave this one out.

You could work up to 3 sets Mike.. If doing more frequently EG every hour - just stick to the one set.

Sciatica can be scary. But give it time, make sure to rest until you start feeling better, the pain will improve and you will be ok! 🙂

Hey Tony, with these exercises I often recommend doing them every hour especially the lumbar extension exercise (leaning back into the hands).
