Living on a budget doesn't mean you are poor. Like you, I never talked about money. My parents taught me it was rude. But the downside is I never learned how to save or invest until I turned 60 and panicked when I realized I had nothing for retirement. I started my own business, paid off all my debt ($30K), built an emergency fund, focused on my health and got my finances in order. Now 4 years later, I'm financially secure but not rich nor do I ever expect to be. Comfortable is just fine with me.

Had a stroke and am now diabetic. Never took meds before. Now I do. Working gig apps to help my budget. God will provide and keep me moving forward. I save my coins and dollar bills also.

I retired at age 53, so I am in my early 60s. Many of them resisted me because they couldn't understand the idea of not working if it wasn't necessary. I considered the phases of my life. I worked very hard to achieve what I have now, but in my last years, I owe it to myself to "stop and smell the roses." In my instance, I departed the nation after retiring and currently reside in Latin America. It made it possible for me to appreciate my new surroundings while escaping all the bad things that were going on in America. Nobody that I know of regrets retiring has yet to come to me.
@Latonya-r.b2 ай бұрын
Nice way to retire. For me, I believe retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My wife and I both spent same number of years in the civil service, she invested through a wealth manager and myself through the 401k. We both still earning after our retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.

It's unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than a million dollars by just investing through an advisor, and I don't have to do much work. Doesn't matter if the economy is misbehaving; great wealth managers will always make returns.

I think this is something I should do, but I've been stalling for a long time now. I don't really know which firm to work with; I feel they are all the same but it seems you’ve got it all worked out with the firm you work with so i surely wouldn’t mind a recommendation.

I love your simple method for budgeting. I think if we return it how things were when we first started living an adult life, at least for me it was simple because that was 1970 and we had nothing. I would ride my bike to pay bills with cash I’d get from the savings and loan, which is where everything we earned went. We manage to complete our lives as we get older. Now that I’m older, I’m all about making things simple. I’m in shock at the grocery store! At this moment I’m cooking a boiled dinner! Thanks for being transparent for us. You’re so far from poor! I am shocked at what is happening with those who were impacted by Hurricane Helene, especially those in the Blue Ridge Mountain areas of North Carolina and Tennessee! I can't imagine the devastation they have experienced - they must be in shock. I'm thankful for those who have volunteered time, money, and supplies to help those in need! Our government officials should be ashamed of themselves for their lack of support considering the billions of dollars spent spent on non-Americans. I agree with you - something needs to change! Write down every way I save, investigate more ways, write down real & anticipated savings…it’s actually fun & takes some of the fear in these challenging days. You are so right about the country needing a change! I enjoy your videos, they're refreshingly open & authentic; however, I would just like to say that you shouldn't be ignoring your revenue (income) earned through your KZbin channel. You may well be putting that income into a high yield savings account at an FDIC-regulated bank in the U.S., but it's still effectively income; you're just immediately transferring (expending) that income into a savings fund. Also, are you reporting it as other income to the IRS on your 1040 tax return? But as to your question, I believe "poor" is a state of mind or, rather, state of being. So I completely agree with you that you are rich. :)

I’m very frugal so when the unexpected happens I won’t freak out about the expenses. Or if I’ve felt compelled to spoil a stray cat.😂 We are very lucky my husband is a rare bird with a pension and our health insurance is paid for through his employer after retirement. 🥰

"rich" and "poor" are relative words....I feel rich too, even though I do not have a lot left at the end of the month. I do what I like, I like what I do and that makes me RICH! Thanks for sharing your numbers!!

Very inspiring and kudo's to you!! Did you actually say your homeowner's insurance was $1.09 a month or did you actually mean to say $109 a month?? I live on the Texas coast and my just renewed policy on my 1000 sq.ft. home shot up to $2827 a year!!

It’s $109.00 per month. I misspoke. Silly me! Thank you for being here.

I’ve found having goal like you’re talking about is a good thing, for me it makes me feel like I’m working toward something! Also, when I retired 2 years ago, I decided to make some of my hobbies ‘paper and pencil’ hobbies..things I can do on notebook paper with pen or pencil…so those are writing stuff like family stories, drawing things like birds…I figured paper and pencil is cheap and I enjoy those hobbies…..my expensive hobby is music..I’m learning piano but have a collection of piano lesson books I’ve collected over the years. Health, yes, that’s a priority and am trying to work on that one…..also living on Social Security…much more than you get…but I am raising a 7 year old grandson and have a developmentally disabled adult child living on my Social Security too. Going to have a big expense real soon as the plumbing in our house has become an issue..might require replacing some pipes and one of the bathrooms….im dreading that…Hope I can afford that! But despite that I feel lucky…I live in a beautiful area with lots to do here….and I get to watch videos made by lovely people such as yourself.

Thank you Sally! You are very kind. You obviously are a strong person with huge responsibilities, yet you are also taking care of yourself in ways that inspire yourself and others. Many blessings and peace be with you and yours.

If you haven’t you should be able to get SSI for your disabled child and SS for your grandson( my grandmother raised her niece and the niece was getting a SS check for many years because neither parent was raising her but that was in New York)if his parents are not around, of course it depends on the state you live in and don’t get discouraged if they reject you several times that happens a lot, if you can get a lawyer or see if you can get free or low cost legal help that usually helps you get the benefits.

Am a new viewer to your channel 🙂 Really appreciate toward the end of the video you noting according to your standards you are not 'poor'.🙂 Don't feel poor either, because I simply note that all my needs are met. And yes, having an emergency fund is important. Especially being on social security now. NEEDS and WANTS are two separate things and many people's wants are not needs. And it's often the wants that get people into debt.

Hi Robin. I'm new to your channel. I am one that you helped by sharing. I've been married over 40 years and most of those years a homemaker. We have used a budget most of those years. We raised three sons on a low budget by the world's standards. But as you say, little is much when God is in it. I agree, the simpler the better. I'm a plain cook. BTW you said 1.09 cents for homeowners insurance? Dod you mean $109.00 per month? Just saying....😊
@simplefoodsimplelife96322 ай бұрын
Thank you Lilli! Yes I did mean $109.00 per month. Silly me. I did correct it in a pinned comment. Thank you for sharing with us. I appreciate it!

This is SOOOO helpful!! May I ask what state you live in? I’m in Seattle and my water sewer and garbage for 2 months averages between $525.00 and $725.00!! Also my home owners insurance is $165.00 a month (so taxes and insurance are $825.00 a month) I’m 63 and am working toward paying off my home in 4 years. I do have renters to help with all these expenses. I would love to know what you eat for $200.00 a month… I am working on being a better shopper and planner so that would be helpful. Thank you!! ❤ Sara in Seattle

I live in Iowa. I cook for myself which saves money. I’ve always been a home cook. My shopping consists of pantry, fresh and freezer items that are on sale or a particularly good deal. I enjoy food preservation and keep a working pantry. Thank you for asking.

By the way Brian Kemp the governor of Georgia said President Biden called all the governors right after the flood started and offered them whatever federal aid they needed. Poor families, whole towns destroyed, much bigger loss than what money can replace.
@CRE-w3x3 ай бұрын
Words are cheap, unfortunately federal aid isn't coming thru like it should. Governor Kemp also sought federal relief aid for 90 counties and 11 was given. He went back again and 30 more were given... 41 out of 90 counties affected.

I enjoyed the vid (first time viewer).Very interesting to hear your budget which I must say is very much in line with my own, save a couple differences. My monthly budget is $1360 and I do still have a very small monthly mortgage. I cant set a certain % for my savings but I am actually able to save more than 20% most months. I don't have separate savings...I lump all together but I do have a goal I work to achieve as a total end result. Im currently doing some work on my house so my savings fluctuates but I never let it get below a certain balance before building back for the next project. I honestly don't feel poor save for maybe a month or two after a large expenditure but the joy of a completed project is plenty to keep me happy. I look forward to your future vids.

Great job with your budget! Where do you find internet for $54/month?!!! My area there are only 2 providers and they both are over $100/month Just for internet. It's crazy! I also budget and update actuals every month around the first. I have a goal of taking at least one trip somewhere before I get too, too old. Other than that, my goals are similar to yours - maintain my health and home as long as I possibly can.

Thank you Deb! I may talk about the internet cost in a future video. I appreciate the question. We don’t have much choice in providers.
