Over the past few centuries, weapons technology has progressed by leaps and bounds, and recently developed equipment that is only a few years old runs the risk of becoming obsolete.
In this modern age of near constant innovation, the shield, a piece of technology with its origins in the distant past, has been given a new purpose even in the twenty-first century.

Well, realistically for them, who's going to counter it? The riot police can confidently March in a Phalanx because they're safe in the knowledge the mob won't be coordinated or disciplined enough to outflank them and exploit the biggest weakness of a Phalanx. While mounted police are almost 100% sure they aren't going to go up against spear warbands or Pikemen lol

Makes sense why we went back to Roman style gear & tactics for riot policing. When it comes to massed formations meant to both protect the members of the formation & to disrupt & defeat opponents using melee & primitive projectile weapons, the Roman wrote the book on it

It's not just the shield tactics that are mimicking the past. The only difference was that instead of the cheek pieces, it had the clear face guard.

Sounds about right to me. Imagine you're in a battle and you knock your opponent down. In an MMA match, you may wait for them to get up, as is sporting. But in an actual battle, what was the point of knocking them down? They'll get back up again and renew their attack, with vigor born of anger. Knock them down and hit them a few times, and you've likely subdued them. Sun Tzu talked about winning not just the battle. But all battles that would come after. All I can say is, when I'm in _my_ backyard swinging around a machete and shield for the shoulder workout and cardio that it is, I also bash my imaginary opponent with the butt of my shield when down. Probably a poor decision in the fight. Yes, it could work to a degree, but it would be sub optimal at best, and if the rioters are undisciplined, it could be catastrophic should some turn to run away. These guys are just civilians after all, they generally have no training or real combat experience. To better utilize them, they have to stop trying to fight a losing battle and make use of superior numbers and mobility to swarm and enclose the officers. Ever shifting movements are less susceptible to failure from panicking troops because they can back out at their own will to calm down without leaving a hole to be exploited

Fun Fact you can disolve plastic riot shields with canned expanding insulation foam. It disolves there shields and makes them even more flamable than they were before at the same time incase they are being ultra violent. Tell your friends. The liquid acrilic makes the hardened acrylic on the riot shields melt the same way and turns them to mush.
@silverjohn6037
@silverjohn6037 Жыл бұрын
Over time it will dissolve. Anyone playing silly games might not be allowed that kind of time. Especially, if you have someone using Molotov's, the police would be justified in using lethal force. In other words don't give silly advice that will get some kid shot so you can sound clever on the internet. I have spoken

@@silverjohn6037 its not silly advise. Police murder people in cold blood ots a matter of time before there are justified riots again and out of control pigs need a counter balance. And it does work fast even on riot shields. Its a cheap cpunter to the over militarization of the police.

For starters a chemical reaction like that isn't gonna happen very quickly. They're definitely not flammable either, they're designed specifically to counter the threat of incidinary devices like molotovs. Shields like this are in use because they work. You should be telling your friends to not fight with the police.

Just to give some detail, full metal shields were not used in combat unless maybe it was super thin and small, those were more decorative pieces usually made of more expensive metal for kings or nobles to show off in their homes to show how rich they were, like a gold plated ak-47 in modern day. An actual useful combat shield would have been made of wood with sometimes leather rims with the intended purpose of getting the enemy's melee weapon stuck in it to force disarm the opponent. some shields that were metal plated like the jousting knight's shield are special and purpose made for the sport not necessarily in live battles, metal rimmed shields are largely myth, not much evidence of them being used in battlefields those found were more modern recreations or depictions, basically museum props.

There were however some shields made from metal, like the buckler which was very small and mostly intended as a deflecting tool for one-handed weapons in duels, it was also light and so could be used as a punching weapon in a pinch.

You just do what the cops apparently do and just study ancient battle tactics, then utilize those with modern and improvised tactics and weapons, altho in order for whatever plan you put together to work you first need to try and get everyone who participates in riots to be on the same page as you and be willing to follow through on your plans, you and these rioters would then need to train for years or at least months in martial arts and fighting with each other in formations and chosen weapons (getting jack would also be a requirement) y'all would also have to find a few ways to communicate and ways for y'all to identify each other, (brightly colored armor sets with a symbol should probably help with identification) and finally, y'all will have to establish a strict militaristic hierchy so that people will know who's supposed to give orders and stuff.

The local riot police core organize training days from time to time they ask reenactment groups and other groups that can fight as 1 unit in melee combat. Than they put us in a mock street and we fight with the police as training it is good fun. Especially because there are rules that keeps it training. Especially the last training round of the second to last are the most fun. Then they allow us to grab shield protective gear and batans ourself and it us fully armed against riot police fully armed. They use allot of roman like tactics except they dont stab but swing because their weapons are all blunt force. The wedge is one they dont use that often in training as it is only effective against a lose formation.

A very large brawl broke out at a hospital in Kawaguchi, Japan, last night, due to a fight between a group of Kurds. I was very surprised to hear about the situation through a tweet from a Kawaguchi City Council member. It is very sad, but the time has come again in Japan when ordinary citizens need to know about shields to protect themselves.
