I remember crawling on the ground working on school bus exhausts in my first couple years getting into my apprenticeships for automotive tech. Doing exactly the same things you’re doing here. I can attest that those expanders do work. I have used them before, the manual ones like that and also a hydraulic one on and exhaust machine at the shop I worked at back in 2007-2008. The joy you’re getting out of this is great. Vehicle fixing and modification can bring so much excitement. Keep up the great work Jeremy!

That's almost how I took the exhaust off my 76 Corvette when I had to change the differential cover (which holds the leaf spring in place) because 2 of 4 ears were broken off. Except, no sawsall, just a standard hacksaw and a great deal of time and energy. When I had everything reassembled and got ready to drive to a muffler shop to weld it back together, I cut both ends out of 4 soda cans and cut it (once each). Used 2 radiator hose clamps each and it was so quiet, the muffler shop thought I was joking.....until they saw my soft drink cans.

Yeah, I wish I could have used a lift. My dad has one in his shop but he stores his 56 t-bird on it so it doesn't get mice inside. Almost more hassle to go out there and shuffle things around for a relatively small job like this. But if it was drive-up accessible....I would certainly have just gone there for sure. Maybe later this summer I'll head out there to weld it up properly👍

Those glass packs will sound awesome and if others think it's too loud oh well. btw those band clamps are the only clamps I use and they work absolutely great especially if you run a full stainless exhaust. they dont crimp the pipe like normal exhaust clamps do so makes it possible to take your exhaust apart without having to cut anything. hell I had a 87 Oldsmobile Cutless that I put a built Buick 455 in (roughly 600hp) and only thing I had on the exhaust was 2 high flow cats just so I could pass emissions when inspection was due. obviously I had to throw mufflers on for inspection but once car passed and was stickered those mufflers came right back off. ya it was a bit loud but I didn't care because it just sounded absolutely amazing especially going though tunnels. actually was actually rather deafening going though tunnels when you opened it up but again I didn't care because it sounded soo mean. only concern was getting pulled over for how loud it was but fortunately that never happened. was a daily driver for 3 yrs starting in my senior yr of high-school but unfortunately I lost car due to rear end blowing up on me causing me to go into wall at my local drag strip. to this day 20yrs later I still miss that car and plan on finding and building another one day.

Worried that glass packs are too loud, glass packs are very cheap for a reason, they're not used to quiet exhausts but make them louder. Basically they just don't work and that's a good thing. They used to be considered illegal by most DMVs when I was young and doing my own wrenching in the sixties and early seventies on my junkers.
@Enigma-Sapiens
@Enigma-Sapiens 2 жыл бұрын
That tailpipe expander works better if you lube it and the bolt in it. I do that and use an impact wrench on mine and it works ok. Those old mufflers were likely restricting your exhaust flow when they started to come apart.

2hrs! you are not going to steal any Cats like that LOL! I like the sounds of the turbo style mufflers over glass packs, they are quiet at idle except for a low rumble, and not so loud as annoy you at higher RPMs, less drone noise too. I would weld those in though, you really didn't have enough pipe inside for those clamps to hold very well. but nice job otherwise, I would just do it at my work on my hoist.

@thechillhacker

Lol I'm sorry - I shouldn't laugh, but this is why I just pull the bed any time I need to work on anything in the back. So much easier to access everything. No creeper, no lift needed. Maybe chock the front wheels and use a farm jack and a couple big stands to get the ass end up in the air. Makes not only stuff like this easier, but lets you inspect and repair any other problem areas easily, like those famous rotting crossmembers that the GMT trucks love to have. Thanks for the information though! While I do need to redo the muffler on my truck, the 65 olds is what I am really researching. Doing her up from the ground up pretty much and want to maximize that 425's flow. Of course, no bed removal option on her, and no lift so I'll have to get creative with the High-lift, the tractor, or something else to put her face down-ass up... 2 Live Coupe?

Where did the glass packs come from

I hope they work out for you. I would think that on an unmodified engine, they should be fine. I tried them... twice... on a heavily modded 440 Magnum back in the 80's, and literally blew the damn things apart both times. I also found that, before I killed them, I was quickly earning the ire of the entire neighbourhood... they were just TOO damn loud. I ended up going to a pair of Hush Thrush mufflers for the remainder of the time I had that car, and those worked out just fine. Not even sure if Thrush is still around these days. Keep us up to speed on how they work out...

Will do. I guess the one good thing I have is that no houses are too close to me. I knew a guy that lived near me once who had them and left for work at 5 every morning. It wasn't long before the neighbors (not me I didn't care) complained enough that the town bylaw officers set up a decibel meter and ticketed him and made him take them out. I think these are actually quieter than my broken muffler was. 👍

As long as they’re not too loud. A nice low rumble is good. They sound good. Anything super loud is annoying. We call them “look at me” mufflers as most guys driving them are trying to get some attention and they just look... silly. There is something to be said for that low rumble - quiet, understated and powerful.
