What Happened To My Body During My 48 Hour Fast

After hearing about all of the great benefits associated with fasting, I decided I wanted to put it to the test by doing my own 48 hour fast. This is the story of what happened to my body in what turned out to be the 52 hours that I gave up food.
I decided to begin my fast on a Tuesday afternoon, right after lunch. I woke up in the morning, and documented where I was at. When it came to my weight, in all honesty I was slightly bloated at this point. I was retaining more water than normal because I had a higher than normal salt intake on Sunday, but my weight was 195.2 pounds.
My blood pressure was 122/76 and my Ketones tested at zero.
I decided to skip breakfast to try and deplete my glycogen stores to prepare for my fast, this was so my body could start producing ketones faster, but more on that in a bit. I decided to still eat lunch, because it was taco tuesday and I really didn’t want to miss that. I finished lunch at 11:32AM and the fast was officially underway.
Through this experiment, I continued to exercise, obviously on this first night I didn’t really notice any difference in my performance at this point. Just slightly hungry throughout the night.
Around midnight, 12 hours into the fast, this is when some of the magic of fasting starts to happen. After fasting for 12 hours, Growth Hormone kicks in. Growth Hormone is what helps you to burn fat, build muscle and slows down the aging process. When you start fasting, your body can see a 1300% increase in the production of growth hormone. This is great, because after you reach 30 years of age, your body produces less and less growth hormone. So fasting helps you to produce more.
A few hours later (13 to 15 hours into the fast), the body realizes no food is coming in and begins to make a change from burning sugar for fuel, to burning fat for fuel. This is when the body starts to produce Ketones, the mechanism that your body uses to burn fat as a fuel source. For those wanting to lose fat, this is the stage you want to be in. The more ketones you have in your system, the more healing takes place in your cells and in your brain.
Right around the time I wake up (17 hours into the fast) my body is entering into the Autophagy phase, this is the self healing phase and you can think of it as a detox phase. Your cells realize that your blood sugars going down, and begins to look for energy within itself by eating the toxins within it. Autophagy will max out at about 72 hours, and will continue from there. This is when your body starts to detoxify itself. Also the ketone production in the body is increasing.
My weight for this first morning of the fast was 192 pounds and my ketone levels are at 4.0.
As lunch time rolls around, I hit the 24 hour mark of this fast. I keep going through periods where I'm incredibly hungry, but they pass after a short bit. Now is the time to hold strong, because this is when a lot of the magic really begins to take place.
At the 24 hour period of a fast, intestinal stem cells start to regenerate. This is great for fixing issues like leaky gut.
Your body also starts to create more of a protein called BDNF. BDNF is great for the brain, it will repair damaged neurons and can help with issues like memory loss, lack of focus and depression.
Your Serotonin levels also go up, this is the chemical that makes you happy! Inflammation in the body also starts to decrease and your blood pressure begins to go down.
So at 24 hours into a fast, a whole lot is beginning to happen, this is just from one day of not eating.
As the next morning rolls around I’m hitting the 36 to 48 hour point of the fast, my weights down to 188.8 and my ketone production is now a 16, this is as high as my testing strips measure and best of all, more benefits are kicking in.
Now that my body really notices that I am not getting any new sugars and begins searching for stored sugars within the fat my body stored years ago, this is why my ketones are so high now.
Also the neuron repair in the brain is really ramping up. This can cause some dizziness as well as tiredness. I noticed that I had a slight, dull headache for most of the day, but it wasn’t terrible, I also feel like going to bed earlier than normal.
So technically I hit the 48 hour mark while I was at work, so I couldn’t weigh myself to find my results, so I held off eating for a little longer, but this is great because white blood cells in my body are starting to get recycled and regenerated, this causes a boost in your immune system.
Stem Cell production is also really high now which is helping repair various issues within the body.
I weighed in at 188.4 pounds and definitely saw my waistline shrink in size.
I saw my BMI go from 27.9 to 27
My body fat go from 23.2 % to 21.7%
My subcutaneous fat as well as my visceral fat also dropped and my metabolic age lowered.
My blood pressure also improved, going from 122 /76 to 117 over 76.

@@ilovecats4208 weļl not really but i am at 222 now i really need to get it around 175 but i get lazy then fall of the plan and this covid is making me really depressed it needs to go away so hopefully we can go back to normal life sometime soon at this time i question myself will things ever go back to normal as media is sometime so toxic and spreading negativity
@ilovecats4208
@ilovecats4208 3 жыл бұрын
@@aliwarraich5332 oh I'm so sorry, but I can definitely relate. I struggle with severe depression myself and this past year I gained 35lbs. I know you didn't ask for my advice but try to stay away from watching the news and reading newspapers, especially about covid. It can be very mentally draining. If I watch too much of that stuff I get angry. The media tends to use scare tactics and definitely can make depression worse. That's the same thing that happened to my neighbour. You're at about the starting weight my Dad was when he started losing weight, but he's also 74 years old! He's down to 190-195 now. He uses an app called "Lose It" that tracks your calories and tells you how much you need every day to lose weight. It's free so if you want you could give it a try! But it's much slower weight loss than using Cole's strategy. Like I said, I understand depression. I'm diagnosed with severe depression, anxiety and ptsd and get benefits for these reasons as I can't work. This last week I only took one shower, after 7 days. I'm an introvert so I enjoy being alone; but it's getting to the point where I'm just shutting myself away in my apartment. Lately I've even stopped reading, playing guitar and painting 😞 it's very hard. I wrote this in hopes to let you know that you're not alone in your struggles and feelings and there's someone out here who understands. My advice again is try to watch much less news, especially about covid and try to find other things to occupy your time, even if it's just video games or something! That's something I do sometimes. Good luck on your weight loss; you can do it! And if you want to get back into fasting my advice in my first comment still stands. Or try the "Lose It" app. Take care and I hope things get better for you soon. This won't last forever, there's even a circle k near me that doesn't require masks. It's all finally starting to calm down, really. It will be a slow process, and things will probably never be exactly how they were pre-covid, but everything will work out and we'll acclimate to the new changes. Sending you good thoughts and love ☺️💙🖤💙

@@mrdfk9410 Absolutely. I've maintained my target weight, no problem. I realized that our relationship with food is damaged, and that time-restricted eating is the key to healthy weight management & metabolic fuction. Fewer meals=fewer insulin spikes. Leptin (resistance) and ghrelin hormones can be reset. I also learned that I can still exercise and be active when fasting. Not being a reactive slave to your stomach, and inducing good forms of stress are good things. I remember back to my first 3 day fast, and how I thought it was such a big deal. It's so easy for me now that I don't even think about it.

I started intermittent fasting 3 weeks ago (generally 16/8), increased my exercise by walking 5kms every evening and changed my diet when I did eat (no bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, alcohol or sugary treats). Effectively, I have cut my calorie intake significantly while focussing on eating much more healthily - plenty of fresh fruit, salads and vegetables with a varying menu that also includes nuts, eggs, salmon, chicken, lean pork or venison steaks. So far, I have lost 8lbs. This is modest but I am a small man and not significantly overweight (currently 132 lbs). I am trying to lose the 14lbs I put on during COVID lockdowns and manage my blood pressure (for which I continue to take medication). My eating window is usually between 8am and 4pm. I find that by 8pm I am feeling hungry but this passes in 2 to 3 hours. By the next morning I feel fine and don’t feel hungry. It actually seems that the longer I go the easier it feels to cope, although I have not yet fasted for more than 23 hours. However, I do tire much more easily and I am concerned about getting enough of the right foods. But after 3 weeks I am more than half way to my target. Thereafter the challenge will be maintaining it.

Wonderful video my friend, very informative. I've been fasting now for about 2 months and the good news like anything else it can turn into a habit and your body adjusts and gets used to it. We have been so badly conditioned to think eating 2-3 times a day is healthy but who came up with these rules I ask? We as a species eat way too much. Out ancestors only ate when they caught pray and that may have been once a week or every two weeks. They did just fine.

Looking good man and great information as usual! I did Keto last year for 40 days and saw similar changes. The pee strips were a great motivator for me because I could absolutely see the results of the diet change. I did end up loosing 22 lbs although my goal was to loose 15. I found the Keto diet took a lot of meal planning and that was a pain so I think I’ll try your fasting plan this year! Thanks, DC

I’ve been interested in Keto too, but just like you said it takes a lot of planning, so I haven’t tried it yet. 22 pounds is pretty solid though!

I think fast starts only after our digestion. That's the moment in which our bodies don't receive nutrients. So if you finish eating at 1 pm, your fasting starts at 16. At least (it depends of what you ate, quality and quantity).

Im doing Keto. Im still struggling. I always fix cauliflower mash or cauli rice. I also use a lot of cream cheese and butter to keep my fat levels up. Im struggling with the bread but im looking at low carb tortillas that are like 10 percent a piece.

Hi, thank you for this educational video! I'd also like to try to fast for 48 hours. How often do you think it should be done? I've just tried a 24 fast and it felt great!🙂

I'd like to learn more about the fasting, can you recommend some literature I can have a look at? Love your videos, curious what happens after the fast? Will all the benefits be reversed? How often will you be doing this in the future? Thank you
@SimpleManChannel

Thanks! You will gain some of the weigh back because you will have food in your digestive system. As long as you don't over eat once you are done, you should keep a lot of your results. Fledge Fitness has a great channel about fasting, I would check him out.

A couple of questions though: 🤔 On an average, how long does natural human growth hormone produced by the body last in the body after one session of HIIT cardio?? Also, after doing an extensive fast, such as 48 - 72 hours, one must re introduce food in a slow and gentle way by eating certain types of food. Otherwise, it can shock the digestive system. What do you recommend eating after these extensive fasts? 🤔

I did a 72 hour fast once I didn’t have a scale or anything but man food taste so good after lol. I have been doing periodic fasts for years but mostly intermittent fasting since last year. I should do it more to keep my weight consistent but it helps me lose weight when ever I gain weight.
