Hi there, Liron here! And in today's vid I want to show you how I simplify the background.
Being able to do this involves a variety of skills - visual language, perception, sensitivity to colors, values etc...
But it can be learned! The more you paint, the more of a visual language you develop. Practice, practice practice!

I love how you edited down the background and put the focus on the boats. The dark and shadows make the boats really pop. This painting turned out really nice!

That's nice Liron. So well simplified, as buildings are always incredibly complex. Your background is very believable!! You know, whenever you do your first washes, I always think THIS time he's messed up! The colours always look so strong and unlikely. You NEVER do! Lesson learned -again. Question: How should we know when a reference photo is NOT good to use? I have the feeling I use wrong pictures.
