The aquarelle is far more richer than the actual picture. Your ship is well demonstrated as a vivacious functional Ketch , on the contrary the picture looks like a plastic model and sombre . For someone who wasn’t going to explain the process, I’m so grateful you "didn’t "because I learned so much better this way. Keep those lips going kid your your the best. Ontario Canada.

I can imagine, talking your way through a tutorial like this painting would take a lot of concentration away from detail that needs your full mental thinking. You've done well to explain how to create it.

I like puns. So the overboard one WAS funny. And when you said you don't have a lot of time but have a vacuum I really thought you were going to say you need to clean your house. Ha ha. This is a really good demo of learning to observe the reference and paint what you see. Inspiring for sure and I will be looking for a similar reference and give it a whirl.

Since I was a child I always admired old ship paintings. Now that I have time (as a senior adult) to pursue learning to paint, I’m looking forward to trying this! (I think this is a clipper ship?)

I like what you said in the beginning. Sometimes you don't need to have an agenda in mind when you're painting. Just enjoy watercolor for what it is. When I was going through school, watercolor helped me relax and destress. I didn't have to be anything, or anyone. I didn't have to be Joseph Zbukvic, Jane Blundell, Jean Haines, or Alvaro Castagnet. I just had to enjoy a living, , unruly art medium.

I love this painting and want to try to paint a ship with sails. As for using the white gel pen, I saw in a video that someone did an ocean/sky scene without boats. They used gold ink and a nib pen to create the highlights on the water. I thought it was pretty neat as it looked like reflections of the sun dancing on the tops of the waves. The artist's name is Kalliopi Lyviaki and the title of the video is: Easy Watercolor Misty Ocean. To see the gold highlights just skip to the end.

Aside from the ketch’s main large sail is supposed to be larger. Yours is much smaller. That is known as the first sail one then the sail above is two. Next mast the large sail is three and the last four.

It really helps to demystify...you were so right saying after the first wash less experienced artists (like me!!!) think now where do I go? I'd love to have a go at something like this. One question I have about the gel pen at the end is do you know what longevity they have or stability of the colour over time? I thought your painting came together beautifully at the end.

One simple question that has nothing to do with the watercolor itself, what type of board are you using to draw/paint and where did you get it? Anything special about it or just a piece of plywood?
