This is about Scott Borchetta of Big Machine Records, her music label, she had been with him since she was a teenager. The jewels she gave him were her albums that went gold, some platinum, and one Diamond. He sold her albums out from her, her stolen lullabies.

This song is about how she feels about the man who discovered her and signed her to his record label, Big Machine Records, when she was a teenager and who subsequently sold her masters. Where this relationship comes into play is all of the internal references to her music that she made while under this label which were her first 6 albums. Taylor has a history of internal references in her music, in Getaway Car she references Love Story, this is something that happens all the time in her music. I didn't have it in myself to go with grace - referencing State of Grace from Red album (#4) And you're the hero flying around, saving face - referencing Superman from Speak Now album (#3) And if I'm dead to you why are you at the wake? - referencing Reputation album (#6) (in the death of her reputation...) Cursing my name, wishing I stayed - referencing All You Had To Do Was Stay from 1989 album (#5) or Stay Stay Stay from Red album (4) Look at how my tears ricochet - referencing Tear Drops On My Guitar from Taylor Swift Debut (#1) You Know I didn't want to have to haunt you - referencing Haunted from Speak Now album (#3) Cause when I'd fight you used to tell me I was brave - possibly referencing Fearless from Fearless album (#2) (I'm less confident about this reference lol) And you're tossing out blame - referencing Don't Blame Me from Reputation album (#6) I'm sure there are other references in this song, but this should start you off and show how intricate her songwriting is! Also, for similarities in this version, you should know the studio version of the song has a lot more production.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with musicians to use the same styles and techniques for different songs, whether it be for themselves or others. It makes sense, you write what you know. Same with Taylor, even throughout all the different genres, you can always see similarities and patterns, but as long as it’s different enough, and they grow as an artist, like our Queen does, I think it’s just fine.

@@markabusireactions hey… you’re just being human. Glad you’re learning her catalog. It’s enormous and spans a lot of genres. In Folklore, there’s a love triangle in “Betty”, “Cardigan” and “August”. Each song is from one of their perspectives. It’s really great if you understand they’re all connected. The main characters names, Betty, James and Inez are the names of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds’ children. (They’re all very good friends in real life).

To speak to you hearing similar melody structures in your head, if you're more listening to the sound of a song on first listen I'm going to suggest 1 of 2 things as a big watcher of musical reactors- 1) Taylor's not for you! I truly don't say that meanly. By her own words she is first & foremost a songwriter, a storyteller. She wrote poetry until she learned 4 chords on her guitar. For her the music is almost always the vehicle she uses to carry her storytelling & wants all of her songs to still be good with all but one instrument removed. Also, it seems like you might be a bit hung up on the narrative that she just wtites about "breakups with boys" for teen girls. Which she often did-when she was a teen girl. She's a hopeless romantic who writes about all facets of Love. She's also written about cancer, mental illness, losing a friend to suicide, dealing with trauma, bullying, being betrayed, growing up, losing a 4 year old child, WWII soldiers, the frontline medical workers at the height of the pandemic, con artists, equality (and lack thereof), kids being terrified to go to school in the US because of school shootings, hiding from paparazzi, how to feel "clean" after you've been traumatized, forgiving when it's really hard & painful, how much she loves her family, the Salem Witch Trials & their relevancy today...should i keep going? My point is anything can be heard in a certain way if you believe going into it that you already know what it's about. The other side of that is, don't most artists write about love & heartbreak A LOT? But no one brings that up about 5SOS, Harry Styles, Kpop, male dominant metal or punk bands, Ed Sheeran, damn-Leonard Cohen! Hallelujah is a really long song about a really bad breakup he went thru & to him it wasn't religious at all! I just mean going forward, maybe let Taylor tell you what the song is about rather then the media or (and i LOVE when reactors do this!) Do a little research BEFORE listening to the song on what she wrote it about & how many of her fans relate to it. It can only allow you to hear the song without a wrong assumption going in. There's a reason people like Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl, Elton John, her friend Ed, Bonnie Raitt, Madonna, Dolly Parton, Imogen Heap, Ryan Tedder, Liz Rose, Nathan Chapman, Jack Antonoff, Andrew Lloyd Webber & even Kevin Costner site Taylor as a songwriting/storytelling savant! She's never sold herself as some Whitney Houston-esque vocalist (although she will knock you out when she wants to, especially live!) or with musical abilities like Pink Floyd, Zepplin or Queen. She's a masterful storyteller, so if that's not your thing or you've slightly dismissed her already in your mind, why waste your time? However, if you want to actually GET why she's literally the biggest music artist in history, why there is no color, age or gender to her massive fan base then i have a second suggestion, but it'll be uncomfortable for you at first! Interested? Ok?! First, whether on your Patreon or by yourself watch the Miss Americana Documentary. We SWIFTIES ADORE watching this with new people! Just trust me! Then, moving forward with reactions, understand what the album is about & specifically the song. Then I would suggest you watch the song through twice! Here's why- it seems like for you initially your hearing all the music, all the instrumentation, the production and the vocals all together as one Sonic sound, so just listen to it that way first and don't worry about the lyrics so much! Then relisten in the same reaction while reading the lyrics you're listening to so you can get a full in-depth understanding of the lyrics that she wrote the story she's telling about, within the musical bed that it's laying on! To me that just seems like what you might enjoy better rather than trying to dissect the Sonic sound of a song on top of trying to understand and dissect her lyricism! Of course you can obviously just tell me to go f*** myself and that's absolutely fine as it's your channel!😁 Do whatever you want, but maybe this will help a little bit with the Swifties that might be in your comment section bitching at you because you're not understanding the lyrics and you're instead comparing certain sounds to a different song! I hope that helps a little bit, maybe, kind of, somewhat, in some way?! If not it's fine, you do you babe & you did a great job!

So, you’re admitting I’m a babe. That’ll do me fine. As for all the rest of that… I actually said the lyrics for the chorus were very good, and I said that they could correspond to any relationship. @@markabusireactions Thanks for that laugh Mark🤣. Some things really don't come across with tone in comments which I'm sure is irritating for us both. I enjoy you as a reactor, I've just seen good reactors get frustrated or worse try to change who they are to keep the Taylor subs & that's sad! I wasn't being mean or vicicous, I honestly think some people, like my late fiance, enjoyed it more just experiencing the whole song as a combination of instrumentation & production (or lack thereof in stripped back versions) combined with all the vocals, melodies etc, then going back to sort of dissect the lyrics that Tay is known for. I hate seeing good reactors get burnt out because of pushy Swifties (which by your comments you've been getting a lot already!) It may have sounded like I was reading you the riot act when I really wasn't, so I apologize for that. There just wasn't an easy way to explain all the things I've seen reactors do, assume, or change about themselves to keep the Swiftie momentum going & so many get burnt out in the end! You seem to notice really minute things within all parts of a song (and I know how much it sucks to have to 'copyright pause" so much) but either trying to react as though you WANT to bother Swifties but are unbothered by us or are actively trying to not enjoy any of the song just imho doesn't do you justice in new & interesting things you could add to the conversation that other TS reactors can't! I personally would love to know more about what you're hearing Sonically that is similar between songs instead of you feeling defensive for hearing those similarities at all because Swifties have been jerks in the comments! You can't please everyone, & I've noticed most of us are fine if you don't really care for a song but gave it a chance & the more we learn about how you like to hear music & what draws you in to a song helps us give you suggestions for things that you'll enjoy more!

Ok, so while not a criticism of new Taylor reactors, i have to say I'm getting a bit annoyed with people reacting to her previous music and saying it sounds like a more current version of someone else's songs. Meaning, when you finally hear it & are reminded of another song 1) There are only so many chords, notes & melodies & well, there's "nothing new under the sun" 2) it's very often that the Taylor song being reacted to came out BEFORE the song it's being compared to & 3) Taylor is a SONGWRITER! She's not an instrumentalist, composer or arranger! She's never claimed to be! From her own mouth she's said, ad nauseum, that every one of her songs were written so they could be stripped back down to the LYRICS & a single instrument & still have impact! If people are looking for master composition, they should head to the local symphony orchestra! Having said that, while on paper, Billie's album with When the Partys Over WAS released in 2018 it, & WTPO didn't start to receive widespread notice, awards & major airplay until early summer 2020. Folklore was surprise dropped in July of 2020 (and by that point Jack had been working with Taylor for over 5 years & Lana around 2 so his sound is going to be recognized in both of their works). Although the full song MTR was recorded in 2020, there are many lyrics that are clearly things she had either written or had the ideas for back to 2017, when Taylor had fulfilled her 13 year, 6 album deal with Scott Borcheta-label owner & like a 2nd father to Taylor-with the recording of Reputation. Prior to but very seriously addressed during the end of this deal, was Taylor wanting desperately to buy her own masters. Scott infamously counteroffered, starting in 2017, till 2019, that Taylor could re-sign with his label & "EARN" back the right to buy one of her old albums with every new album recorded, therefore never actually being able to fully own her work! Since her catelog made up around 80% of Big Machines net worth, & Taylor knew Scott wanted to sell the label, she made the decision to choose her future instead of her past, signing with UMG & releasing the Lover Album in 2019. In that part of the story alone you can clearly see the building blocks of the majority of MTR ("Even on my worst day/did i deserve babe/all the Hell you gave me? Cuz i loved you/i swear i loved you till my dying day" "And you're the hero flying around saving face/and if I'm dead to you why are you at the wake/cursing my name/WISHING I STAYED/ look at how my tears richochet/" "you know i didn't want to have to haunt you, but what a ghostly scene/YOUR WEAR THE SAME JEWELS THAT I GAVE YOU AS YOUR BURY ME" "I didn't have it in myself to go with grace cuz when I'd fight you used to tell me I was brave" (all of the Kanye/Kimye issues, proving she wrote her music, the sexual assault trial, even fighting Scott over being in charge of her business & switching genres, etc) "I can go anywhere i want/anywhere i want JUST NOT HOME (The label built on her back as the first & biggest artist they had & the must successful indie artist in history!) And when you can't sleep at night you hear my STOLEN LULLABIES!" "You had to kill me but it killed you just the same/cursing my name wishing i stayed" (her leaving the label because he killed them both with greed) "you turned into your worst fears, tossing out blame, drunk on this pain, crossing out the good years" is what Scott chose to do to her,for money, & Scooter swept in last minute so two men could try to bring the most powerful woman in music to her knees for daring to stand up to the industry (little did they know!) which Scooter now says he would have handled things with Taylor VERY differently! (Shocking.) Taylor had the song about Rebecca Harkness in her back pocket for SEVEN YEARS before fully creating the song. So lyrically, what Taylor is writing about rarely has to do with other people's music. Sonically, MTR from the album version was compared most to Clean & I Know Places from 1989 (when she heavily started writing with Jack but before he started writing with Lana) with the haunting tone similar to Don't Blame Me from Rep & even Haunted from Speak Now. This live version, may invoke, with Jack on Piano, compositions by Lana & Billie, but don't you think it's more likely that some of THEIR work was more likely influenced by Taylor then vice versa? It's a bit like saying a song by Michael Jackson sounds like a song by The Weeknd or that a live MJ performance is a lot like BTS! Please give respect where it's due mon amí! Taylor has been writing music for over 20 years (just for herself & then for others between the ages of 13-15 when she was on a SONGWRITERS deal in Nashville, then writing, performing & recording her own music for the last 17 while still writing for other artists-you should look up hit songs Taylor has written for others!) My point is Taylor doesn't need to"copy" others & if she feels like something of hers sounds too similar to another song or sound she'll say that it inspired her or has actually put artists with zero input on her work down as co-writers to give them credit. It comes down to this (& again if anyone read this far into my rant, you're my hero!) a club DJ can hear two songs that could blend into each other where no one else hears that until it's done with one listen, so for each person, every song for different reasons can make you think of another, but for the love of God, please stop disrespecting artists, 4 or 5 bars of instrumentals & barely any lyrics into their song by quickly & suspiciously, saying it sounds like so & so's song! You're doing yourself wrong by not truly listening to THIS song & THIS meaning & THIS feeling as a whole. Show her a bit more respect than that! It's her art & legacy! PS- Taylor is ridiculously well read & well educated & in the world of Heroes & Villians throughout history she actually is right that the HERO's greatest Nemesis is someone that he used to love & trust. That IS historically factual which isn't the same as the canon for MODERN DAY HEROES from the 20th & 21st century. Sorry friend! I'm not trying to be mean! Considering the source, Taylor, who wrote "Is it romantic how all my elegies eulogize me?" on this same album, it's safe to say she was speaking historically-she usually is!😉

The superhero thing might be referring to shows like Smallville-I’m her age, and that show was huge when we were just the right age to watch it. 😂 It was surprisingly good for being so bad, if that makes sense? It certainly felt like it had a heart that a lot of more recent movies are lacking. Not because movies used to be better, but because the style these days isn’t sincerity and meaning what you say. It’s more wink-and-a-nudge ‘don’t worry, we know this is ridiculous, too’ which appeals less to me personally. There’s also Professor X and Magneto… Spiderman and Green Goblin in some continuities… You could even lump Gandalf and Saruman in there if the istari count as superhumans. 😂Oh, you could even count the first Iton Man movie, since his mentor betrayed him. …Actually, I think this trope was most prevalent specifically in movies when I was in high school or so. Huh. I’ll go watch the actual reaction now. I just got distracted thinking about all the superhero movies and shows I watched that totally did have that trope, hahaha.

@@markabusireactionsI loved that show, haha. I rented the whole series from Blockbuster one summer and marathoned it with my sisters. You had some nice insightful comments in this video, btw. I like reactors who do research, but I also enjoy seeing interpretations by people who don’t know the standard fan explanations. Songs can mean more than one thing. I mean, “Getaway Car” is about a fictional narrative, a metaphorical retelling of a true story, AND it’s an extended metaphor all at once. I don’t think the sound will be your style, probably? But the metaphor is that a ‘getaway car’ is a short term relationship used as an excuse to ‘escape’ a longterm relationship you can’t seem to disentangle yourself from otherwise. And that’s just the meanings I know about. I mean…sometimes fans have an idea of the ‘right’ interpretation of a song, but that’s just not how art works. Viewers and listeners bring themselves to art. Also, Taylor has specifically said (Reputation Tour movie, the speech before the acoustic set, as I recall) that she likes when fans make new meaning from her songs… Anyhow, I don’t think you need to pay mind to anybody hassling you about how you interpret the songs.
