She wrote this song about everything that happened between her and Scott Borchetta (the owner of her previous label, Big Machine Records). While every lyrics relates back to a feeling or moment between them, I'm just gonna pull a few and give you guys some insight :) Hope it helps! "I didn't have it in myself to go with grace" is in regards to all the public blow ups they've since had once she found out Scott sold her masters to Scooter Braun. She wasn't prepared to take it silently and went for the kill in the media. "Cause when I'd fight, you used to tell me I was brave." Scott was Taylor's biggest cheerleader, having signed her when she was 14 and being one of the first people on his new label. He watched her grow up. He was like family to her. "Cursing my name, wishing I'd stayed." The contradiction of her knowing that he is publicly throwing punches her way, but deep down he always wanted her to stay with the label but was pissed off when she decided to move so that she could own the masters to her future work (something that he wasn't willing to offer her if she stayed with Big Machine). "And I still talk to you, when I'm screaming at the sky." A vulnerable lyric, IMO, and I think it shows that while Taylor wishes she could just hate Scott and move on, a part of her was just deeply hurt by the betrayal she felt when he sold her music to her worst enemy. "And when you can't sleep at night, you hear my stolen lullabies." This lyric cemented the idea of it being about Scott, because she feels like he never gave her a real chance to own her music and thus, stole them from her and he should feel guilty about that/it should keep him up at night. I remember in an interview she said that she had many conversations with Scott over the years (sometimes in tears) about her problems with Scooter, but Scott had 330 reasons to forget those problems. (referencing the $330m sale Scott got for selling off his label, 80% of revenue that Taylor accounted for BTW)

This is not for Scotter Braun but for Scott Brochetta's betrayal to Taylor Swift. Because even after all those years they've helped ech other rise, it has always been just a "business" to Scott.
@anabergespolo86314 жыл бұрын
The official story Taylor has given to this song is that it's about a ghost (a dead woman) haunting the man who was obssesed with her in life who is at her wake lamenting she is gone (and in the lyrics it's heavely implied he killed her, so heavy domectic violence themes there). BUT, as many people have correctly pointed out, this seems like a story she uses as a metaphor to talk about how Scott Borchetta, a man she loved like a father and was with her growing her musical career for 13 years (ages 15-28) betrayed her and "killed" her by not letting her buy her catalogue and sold it instead to a man Taylor hates and with whom there is very little chance of buying her songs from, all because of money. The lyrics are pretty clear, "I didn't have it in myself to go with grace" about her decision to go public with all of this. "And if I'm on fire, you'll be made of ashes, too" about how maybe she lost her old records, but she has killed Scott's reputation and has made him lose all her future music which will be very lucrative. "'Cause I loved you, I swear I loved you, 'Til my dying day" About how he really viewed Scott as a father figure until she saw his true colours when he sold her masters to Scooter, that's the dying day. "Cursing my name, wishing I stayed" Yeah Scott is mad but wishes above all he still had her in his label. "You wear the same jewels that I gave you, As you bury me" The jewels represent her music that she gave him and how he was wearing it as he was at her metaphorical wake. "Cause when I'd fight, you used to tell me I was brave" Taylor had to fight Scott A LOT on many artistic decisions. He even forced her 3rd album to be named something different than what it was in the end (she wanted Enchanted, it was named Speak Now) but on the times Taylor fought and won it turned out to be a huge win. Biggest example of this is Taylor going pop, Scott tried to change her mind in any way he could and when she didn't budge tried to convince her to do a few country songs for 1989, make the CDs pictures more country looking for the old fans, even tried to have 1989 as a finished product labelled as country when we all know it's her most pop album so her country fans thought it was like her old stuff and would buy it. Taylor had to fight him every step of the way and ended up making the most awarded pop album in history. "And I can go anywhere I want, Anywhere I want, just not home" Obviously she is super famous so any label will have her, she can go anywhere except to the label who had her since she was 15 until she was 28, which is home. "And when you can't sleep at night (You hear my stolen lullabies)" Pretty obvious at this point that the stolen lullabies are her stolen songs, right? "You had to kill me, but it killed you just the same" Like yeah he may have managed to make bank selling her songs but now his reputation in the industry is destroyed and his career looking forward isn't looking that great. "You turned into your worst fears" Scott was just starting his label when he signed Taylor, he wasn't super rich or super known back then, she was literally one of the first artists he signed and the only superstar he ever discovered. She MADE him. Pretty sure this refers to fame and money changing Scott into someone who would sell out a friend over a couple of million, since Taylor has said in the past that when she was starting out he helped her and supported her a lot, and with fame and riches he changed and turned into his worst fears, one of those rich executives that care more about money than music. "And you're tossing out blame, drunk on this pain, Crossing out the good years" When all this came to light Scott tried to blame Taylor any way he could, and crossed out the good years they shared. So yeah. I don't doubt the story she gave us being true but I am 1000% sure she took this woman ghost's story and used it as a metaphor to talk about her own story

This is about her previous record label, she signed with the guy who started it when she was 14, before he had any other artists or even an office. The existence of the label is completely founded on her success (the jewels she gave him). They butted heads throughout the years about how her career should go but ultimately she viewed him as a father figure and basically family. Then when her contract was up, they couldn’t agree to terms because she wanted to buy her previous masters and own future ones and he wouldn’t allow it. (She could go anywhere she wants just not home) Then once she moved on to a different label, he still owned her masters (the stolen lullabies) which he sold along with the whole label which she helped build to Scooter Braun who she hates. Now she is in a battle with Scooter/the label president about use of her masters, they block each other from using her old music (her tears are ricocheting because she’s hurt and betrayed but they’re ending up hurt financially)

I think of "ricochet" as in bouncing back. Her tears ricocheted back at the other person and now the other person is crying. I do know the song is about Scooter or whatever, but I like the interpretation its about losing a loved one. Either literally, like a family member passed away and now the other person is dealing with it badly-perhaps feeling resentful or maybe regretting not mending the relationship beforehand. I did see someone say it could be seen as a divorce.

the song is talking about the betrayel of her label as she says : " you wear the same jewels as you bury me " meaning the money she made for the label and all the success then he buried her ( betrayed her) and also when she says " when you can't sleep at night you'll hear my stolen lullabies " meaning what you stole from me will haunt you in ur sleep .. And finally " if am on fire you'll be made of ashes too " cause they were working together so if she was over so was he " look at how my tears ricochet" all the hurt and pain the label did to her will affect them just the same ...

She takes the point of view of the dead person. She uses the metaphor of death/funeral to talk about a broken relationship, and probably the song was inspired by all the things that happened between her and her past record label, specifically Scott Borchetta, who was a sort of mentor/father figure for her until he sold the label and her masters to a man she despises, Scooter Braun.
@moonlightkayla49034 жыл бұрын
taylor wrote this song all alone and it’s the first song she wrote so to me that means she wrote it without folklore in mind. it’s about her relationship with her former label and the man who runs that label, Scott Borchetta, as others have stated. when she says “you had to kill me but it killed you just the same” i think it means he attempted to harm her career by selling the masters of her music to scooter braun, however that also killed him because it tarnished his reputation since she went public about how Scott Borchetta refused to allow her to buy her masters. They spent many great years together seeing as he signed her at an early age but all those great years are crossed out now by how he backstabbed her.

I love the lyricism here almost intentionally pertaining to a wedding and a funeral. She opens with ”We gather here“ and usually at the start of a wedding ceremony they say We gather here today. And I feel like that’s Also said at a funeral. She switches it up in the second verse saying we gather stones. And then talks about a diamond ring. Again relating to a wedding it could be a wedding ring. Then later she says ”I swear I loved you, til my dying day“ that seems like she’s talking about the wedding vow Til death do us part. So many wedding correlations.

The songs on this album can be interpreted in so many ways and that's what I love about it. Her writing in this album is different but similair to her older albums like her debut album, fearless, Speak Now, red even 1989. But rep and lover were more from her perspective. Like even the song lover. Even cruel summer, even the man. Although great songs people want to connect with their own percpectives.. Not Taylors. And she's done a STELLA job with this album by turning her real life into fictional stories. Creating characters and now everyone can relate. This song for example to me is about her label manager who found her, Scott Borchetta. Its about him and the label she bascially CREATED. That was her "home". When her contract ended, she went to republic records/universal music. And in her caption she wrote it's her new home. She was with big machine since she was 14. She made SCOTTS dream come true by having his own record label. And he made her dreams come true. They seemed like they had such a close family like relationship. Knew her family and all. It was a very public feud between them. And scooter braun, a manager he sold all her music to, plus the label. She sings "and when you can't sleep at night you hear my stolen lullabies".

Taylor said only three songs are about James and Betty (cardigan, august, and betty - ABC). This song is generally believed to be about her former label who sold her masters to a man who didn't help make them despite Taylor begging to own them for years. She switched labels after he told her she could only have her masters if she signed with him for another 5 albums. She could earn her albums back. One new album equals one old album. The problem was Taylor said she had a feeling he would sell the label and her future freedoms could be locked away by the new owner who could prevent her from earning her masters back, so she found a new label. The year after switching labels, her old label was sold just as she predicted. The sad part is Taylor would've paid just as much for her masters as the new owner did, but her label refused to give them to her for whatever reason. The funeral is metaphorical.

The song's about her battle with her old boss (Scott Borchetta, Owner of Big Machine Records) over the ownership of her songs. Scott ended up selling his record label to Scooter Braun for $300+ million, which included all of the songs Taylor ever made, including her 6th album reputation. Scooter Braun is Justin Bieber & Ariana Grande's manager and had tried to sabotage Taylor's career before this. Neither Scott nor Scooter gave Taylor the opportunity to own or buy the songs she wrote. So basically, "my tears ricochet" means that the hurt these guys have caused Taylor, will eventually hit them just the same. Taylor has been outspoken about re-recording all of her past albums later this year, all of which she will own and profit off of. Therefore, her old albums will be worth very little and Scooter will be left with nothing. It's basically a classy "fuck you" song. This whole situation further plays out in another song on folklore called 'Mad Woman', which is about how two men (possibly Scott and Scooter) try to take Taylor down by calling her names and stuff.

This song to me, is about Taylor (being the ghost) and witnessing the person who tormented her life (whether it be a lover or the label who stole everything from her) and watching them cry over her and cure about the place wishing she had stayed despite all the hurt they caused her- maybe even possibly being the cause of her death. That's the brilliance of this record. Taylor telling folk tales such as a ghost showing up at their own funeral and flipping the narrative to be a song about her own battle with her ex-label and a third meaning of a romance gone terribly wrong and watching the lover that scorned you cry at your funeral.

Like her talking about them wearing the same jewels that she provided by all the hits she gave them, while they “bury her” or throw her name in the mud or when she says “if I’m dead to you why are you at the wake! Cursing my name, wishing I stayed” could mean how they constantly still talked about her after she chose not to be with them anymore and how they probably wish she would have stayed.

My interpretation of this song is simple: it's a toxic relationship. But not necessarily a romantic one. Is someone who tried to kill her reputation (She already talked about killing reputations in the REPUTATION album.). So someone is cursing her name, talking shit about her, trying to bury her in the music industry. So the burying part is totally a metaphor. The love triangle is: Betty, Cardigan and August. So she's not interpreting a character now, she's being herself. What happened recently in her life: Scooter Braun bought her masters, tried to steal her "lullabies". He now, owns the publicity and marketing of her older songs, so she cannot release anything on Netflix or KZbin that has any of her older songs before "LOVER". But, even tho he tried to kill her, it killed them just the same. Because, since she opened up and tossed them into the media eyes, there's a sabotage going on. So, trying to kill her rep, they killed their rep, too.

Guys your deep in the forest and getting lost, This is about Taylor and being betrayed by someone she thought considered her the daughter he never had. I think the battleships sinking beneath the waves represent her albums (battleships being big valuable assets). He would not sell them to her and now she has plans to re-record new versions of them so she can essentially own them herself. If she does that, it will devalue the worth of those original albums. Her fans will listen to and buy the new recordings owned by Taylor. And the old masters will be worth much less. So Taylor will be the winner in the end.

Have you guys listened to or reacted to Look What You Made Me Do? I have a theory that this song is the “dead/old Taylor” speaking to the present Taylor.

Okay but i believe in the beginning she is speaking about Calvin, she loved him and they were together for a really long time, but they fell out or love and he spoke badly about her on twitter.

There are no other songs about the love triangle and a lot of these songs aren’t about romance lol.

Am i the only one who hears people talking in the back round i think in farsi maybe

I think she's talking from a dead guy's perspective, and the tears he cried because of the girl are hurting her now that he's gone. (Btw, it was an abusive relationship) Also, there's an entirely other meaning to that song that interpretes it as something she (as Taylor) sings to her former label (which ended in bad blood)

U guys know nothing about Taylor Swift ! Every single Swiftie knew it's about her former music label who sold her album right to scooter
@saakshishetty78994 жыл бұрын
You know some people take time to understand it. I am a huge Swiftie. When I first listened to this song, I thought this is from James' POV unless someone pointed out that it is related to her previous record label.

Sometimes y'all just think too much when it's not that deep. Y'all think about so much that y'all miss the actual point of the songs😂 and don't realize what happens until the end of the song
