Original Track • Sinead O'Connor - Noth...
We say goodbye to Sinéad with this beautiful masterpiece,
Shuhada' Sadaqat (born Sinéad Marie Bernadette O'Connor; 8 December 1966 - July 2023), known professionally as Sinéad O'Connor, was an Irish singer, songwriter and political activist. Her debut studio album, The Lion and the Cobra, was released in 1987 and charted internationally. Her second studio album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got (1990), became her biggest success, selling over seven million copies worldwide. Its lead single, "Nothing Compares 2 U", was named the number-one world single in 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards.
O'Connor released ten studio albums. Am I Not Your Girl? (1992) and Universal Mother (1994) were certified gold in the UK, Faith and Courage (2000) was certified gold in Australia, and Throw Down Your Arms (2005) went gold in Ireland. Her work included songs for films, collaborations with many other artists, and appearances at charity fundraising concerts. Her 2021 memoir Rememberings was a bestseller.[
In 1999, O'Connor was ordained as a priest by the Irish Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church, an Independent Catholic sect that is not recognised by the Roman Catholic Church. She consistently spoke out on issues related to child abuse (including her 1992 Saturday Night Live protest against the continued cover-up of Catholic Church child abuse), human rights, racism, organised religion, and women's rights. Throughout her music career, she spoke about her spiritual journey, activism, socio-political views, as well as her trauma and mental health struggles. In 2017, O'Connor changed her name to Magda Davitt. After converting to Islam in 2018 she changed it to Shuhada' Sadaqat, but continued to record and perform under her birth name.

A beautiful soul gone too soon, immensely talented, incredibly intelligent, greatly cherished, independent, loyal, and extremely passionate. One of Ireland's daughters, I loved everything about her, sorry, I love everything about her, the way she was soft-spoken with a loud message that was misunderstood by millions. She struggled greatly with the trauma she endured and the poor mental health that arose from those tragedies. A mother to four, she was strong, fearless, and one of a kind. I watched the posted (below) live version of Nothing Compares 2U years ago but rewatched it again after she passed. I cried at the loss of this beautiful woman and remembered the raw emotion and her astonishing range. RIP, Sinead, you were loved and always will be.❤💔❤❤

Beautifully said: she was a rebel and she stood up for her believes! For me as a rebellious woman who suffered from a lot of violence in my life she has always been a rolemodel to never be quiet! Her death hit me hard! So maybe the only positive thing I get of this loss to keep on standing tall and proudly! R.I.P. beautiful rebel lady

I think you said it well. She was tough as nails and stood up for her beliefs and it cost her cos this world is bullshit. At the end of her days, after her son died, I think she was done with this shit world. She's still inspiring me though, for what it's worth. Not sure if it's worth much.... but I hope it's worth something. Sending love to you and everyone who thought Sinead was a fuckin hero.

I still so clearly remember being in high school in the 80’s when her first album came out and loving her instantly and passionately. Everyone at my conservative Catholic high school made fun of me for liking “weird” music anyway, but I suffered a full scale attack over her. I didn’t care; she was a brilliant human with a voice that went beyond any ordinary talent; they just couldn’t hear it. They didn’t get it. Fortunately, I was blessed to see her live twice in Cleveland when she toured her first two albums. I miss her terribly now and feel a bit salty toward all the people who are now raving about her when they didn’t know or care about her before, or worse, ridiculed her. I hope she has finally found peace. What a truly tragic loss for this world. Thank you for your lovely review and showing her the respect that she deserves ❤

Prince wrote this song in 1984. Sinead O’Connor did this cover version in 1990. It went to no.1 in the UK charts and no.1 in 17 other countries. She tweaked the script slightly to make it a female version. The part she had tears in (All the flowers that you planted, Mama, in the backyard….) was when she was thinking about her mum in that moment, who died in a car crash in 1985. Three weeks before that accident, Sinead wanted to forgive her Mum for all the abuse she gave her. She had a very difficult life with her mum, and wanted to forgive her, but it was too late. All the other lyrics in this song (written by Prince) wasn’t about her life. She chose this song because she loved it herself.

What a beautiful tribute. I’ve also been struggling to come to terms with her death, such an amazingly talented and courageous artist she has been. So much music she made. A suggestion of another emotionally raw song would be Mother by John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band. The three singers who can truly move me are Sinead, John Lennon and Jeff Buckley ❤

The re-framing of the Pope incident is pretty unfair to the people who were offended. She did not explain anything about it, which should be rule #1 for a protest like that - Let people know what the issue is. The MSM in the US completely avoided any reporting about the child sex abuse scandal that was just breaking in Ireland, so no one knew about it. It came across as just another edgy artist trying to get attention by attacking the Church, and she had only been in the country for 5 minutes when she came out and attacked the national anthem. She was right about the scandal. But she handled it poorly, probably purposefully because she was not comfortable with the level of fame she had risen too. Very well done reaction that was very heart felt!
