We recently visited Historical Fort of Maharashtra,Sindhudurg
Sindhudurg Fort, a remarkable 17th-century sea fort located near Malvan, Maharashtra. Constructed by the visionary Maratha king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, between 1664 and 1667, this fort stands as a testament to his naval foresight and architectural prowess.
Strategically positioned on Kurte Island in the Arabian Sea, Sindhudurg Fort was built to safeguard the Maratha empire from foreign invasions and to strengthen the coastline. The fort encompasses approximately 48 acres, featuring a 3-kilometer-long rampart with 42 bastions, and walls that are 30 feet high and 12 feet thick. Notably, the main entrance is ingeniously concealed, making it difficult to locate from the outside.
Visitors can reach the fort via a 15-minute boat ride from Malvan Jetty, with services operating between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. The fort houses several intriguing features, including three sweet water reservoirs, a temple, and imprints believed to be the hand and footprint of Shivaji Maharaj. Exploring the fort offers breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea and a deep dive into Maratha history.
