I have loved this song since I first heard it in a folk club / pub in about 1968. Luke Kelly did a wonderful version - the sort of rendition where you think no-one else need ever bother to do it again. It's been done. I picked up a copy of Sineád's 'Rememberings' for a Dublin to Charlotte flight last week and found that she had recorded it. Rest in Peace Sineád - I am so glad you gave us this. Sineád you left the world a much more beautiful place than you found it.

I thank her for taking the traditional Irish song and reimagining it as a love song sung to a woman, by a woman. It's always transformative when a celeb comes out as lgbt, she as having said she's 'bisexual'. Like that concern, she's very brave, especially in light of how disliked she is in the US, to have come out about having the bipoliar illness. (She tore-up a picture of the Pope on Saturday Night live, a TV show here in the US, in the last 80s, and it desptroyed her career in "The States".) I'm surprised she apparently lives here ( in the US). I don't have that ilness, which is as legit an illness as cancer or aids, a chemical-brain-disease, and having nothing to do with how one was raised or poorly copes with life. , but i think anytime someone speaks abut it, and in such a slefless and potentionally career-harming way, they deserve credt for doing so. I hope she's well, and if not, has a caring set f family and friends to help her along. My positive thoughts and prayers go out to her. #SaintPatricksDay #HappySt.PatricksDay #lgbtq #ItGetsBetter #SineadOConnor

Maybe she just didnt interfere with the words?A pathetic practice common nowadays ,for instance when a man sings "I dont know how to love him" from "Jesus Christ Superstar" he changes it to "her"...just sing the bloody song....

Remember this is a Scottish folk song. However, there is a great cross over between Scottish & Irish music. In the Scottish version the glass of brandy is replaced by a cask & the drinking of it results in seldom thinking as opposed to always thinking. Still, this lassie can hold a tune.

Hello, I am a sound engineer and music theorist (with co-responding uTube channel here). I wanted to give some technical notes on this video. What she did for this take was perform live with her band--except that they all played EXACTLY to the melody and instrumentation of the studio recording itself. Then they removed the audio. So, it looks like she is singing it live, but for the sake of the music video, they over-dubbed the studio release to show-off, and of course SHARE the finished recording. // Could this be her Death Song? It's in E-major. A key and note I've always associated with consciousness, awareness. It's triangular; The Light of Christ. She finally loved herself, and then she died. Sinead O'Connor is Peggy Gordon.

O Peggy Gordon, You are my darling Come sit you down upon my knee And tell to me the very reason Why I am slighted so by thee I am so deep in love that I can't deny it My heart lies smothered in my breast But it's not for you to let the whole world know it A troubled mind can find no rest I leaned myself on a cask of brandy It was my fancy, I do declare For when I'm drinking, I'm always thinking Wishing Peggy Gordon was here I wished I was in a lonesome valley Where womankind cannot be found And the pretty little birds do change their voices And every moment a different sound I wish I was away in Ingo Far away across the briny sea Sailing over deepest waters Where love nor care never trouble me

It's one of those songs that, once you get it into your head, you just can't get it out. Songs of that type, go all the way from sonic torture to sublimely ethereal. Luckily, this one is on the latter end of that spectrum. And Sinéad teases every drop of ether out of it. My only beef is, she took out one verse (looking around, it seems about an even split between performers who do 3 verses and those who do all 4). But at the slow pace she keeps, it would have stretched from 5½ minutes to almost 7. Which would have been fine with me. PS. With the many performances of this song on here, conspicuously absent are the ones by the Clancy Brothers, and by Schooner Fare. Do they prohibit their recordings from going on KZbin? Pity if they do.
