Something that I’ve noticed lately is my singing is so boring, I’ve finally gotten to the point where I have a decently good tone quality, however when you see me singing you’re like alright he sounds good nothing special. Something that I realized is that I was so focused on technique and sounding good I forgot the whole reason I was singing which is to tell a story. So something that really helped me was your advice on the monologue, not keeping a dead pan expression and to really tell it like a story.

I used to sing in a band, and I would have moments where I could see in the eyes of the people watching that they were taken in by my singing. Then other times my singing was very one dimensional and uninspiring. I was never able to really nail it down, the good stuff from the chaff. That zone can be elusive and I guess thats what seperates the amateur's from the pros. This video is very insightful with great advice toward undoing a flat, one dimensional delivery. She is so correct. You ARE telling a story! Tell it with all the emotional nuance of real life through pitch and vocal expression. That is THE zone to seek, along with a trained voice. I actaully sing better at 58 than I did in my 30's, because I'm conveying a story, and that is where my mind is.

I just became aware of this problem on my studies. I'm so concerned about the tone and techniques that i forget the storytelling. I'm practicing the song "lasciatemi morire". I play it technically good, but i forgot how sad the song is and this isn't clear on my performance .

When I don’t feel a song I usually struggle to convey it’s overall emotion. I’m not common to sounding non-emotional when singing so when it happens it’s quite noticeable.

This is exactly what it makes so hard for me to record a song. All those sides of a voice, I never know which to pick or I go overboard with one. Like; I need to sound sad, this line is sad, but then it sounds so fake I'm like; no I have to remain authentic, but then I might sing a sad line in a bit too happy way, etc. etc.

I have naturally good voice but I seem to be unable to sing with emotions, even though while singing I really feel like I am doing it. It feels terrible and makes me very unmotivated.

Maybe it is lack of connection to the song(s). There are many themes in songs these days that I cannot relate to at all: breakups, heartache, cheating, illicit romance, one-night stands, war, cars, drugs. Even songs in first-person which sing "I" throughout. My preference is to sing songs written in third-person such as songs about nature, songs about the meaning of life, or about beautiful places. Those, I can connect with.
