Hello! I'm Andy - a semi-professional singer-songwriter from the UK, based in Germany. I'm a solo artist as well as vocalist of a rock band. I also teach English Language at university level, and this semester, due to covid-19 restrictions forcing an online semester on us, I did a special online version of my course "The Language of Songwriting."
Alongside a bunch of songwriting challenges, part of the final project included the option of making a reaction/review video to a song that my students particularly enjoy, discussing what elements of the song(writing) are special to them. I never give out tasks I'm not willing to do myself, so I recorded one of my own (Ghost Love Score by Nightwish, also on my channel). I put it on KZbin for fun to see whether there was interest in this kind of video, and I was really pleasantly surprised at the positive responses! So I've gone ahead and made some more!
In contrast to the many wonderful reactors out there, I'm reviewing a song I already know well. My reactions, therefore, are not as spontaneous or sensational as those of professional reactors ;-) Would you like more? Yes, each competitor had his guardian who announced him and looked after him throughout the competition. "I am singer" is a competition for professional singers, often with many years of achievements, it is not a talent competition. Only Dimash was completely unknown, invited as a wild card, the only non-Chinese, the youngest in the history of the competition. That's why he was asked to open the season and perform first (the more famous and titled singers, the later they performed). Dimash performed and sang SOS. Shocked everyone and became a night sensation in china. The song had 600 million views, and when he woke up in the morning, he had bodyguards. After SOS, everyone was impressed, and after the second episode - Opera2, they loved it. Dimash took first place in 3 episodes - SOS, Opera 2 and Adagio, and finally 2nd place, for the very famous Chinese singer Sandy Lam (10:07) status in China such as B. Streisand. It is said that he did not choose Opera 2 himself, but he was asked to show his vocal abilities. The judges were an audience of 500 people who voted after each episode. All Dimash's songs are pearls (except maybe Uptown Funk, which is not my favorite ..) As Fawzia mentioned, the hosts are called "music partners" and they are singers or tv personalities who help the contestants navigate the "zillion" moving parts of the show (interviews, documentaries, rehearsals, etc.) Dimash partner, A Lai, is a kazhak artist who have made a career in China, and therefore is not only his music partner but his main role is translator.

The contest lasts 14 weeks, but Dimash has only 13 performances because he had already made it into the semi finals by week 11. 1. S.O.S. (French) 2. Opera 2 (Russian) 3. The Show Must Go On (English) 4. Autumn Strong (Mandarin) 5. Uptown Funk (English) 6. Adagio (English) 7. Daididau (Kazakh) 8. Daybreak (Mandarin) 9. All By Myself (English) 10. Unforgettable Day (Mandarin/Kazakh) 11. Bye week - He had already made it into the semis 12. Confessa/Diva Dance (Mandarin/Italian/Alien) (Semi-finals) 13. Michael Jackson Tribute medley (English) (Finals) 14. Give Me Love (Makhabbat ber maghan) (Kazakh) The last performance was part of the 2017 Biennial Concert and not part of the competition. It was broadcast live and is an original song written for Dimash.

So I had written a long (for me) comment here, mentioning other great performers in the 2017 Singer program and giving a couple of links - and it seems to have completely vanished! 😡 So to recap: Terry Lin, who became a good friend and father-figure for Dimash during the competition. Teresa Carpio, a Filipino/Chinese vocalist in her sixties (extremely good, check out her cover of “Yesterday, When I Was Young”). Sandy Lam, the eventual winner, gave several excellent performances. Tia Ray, another good friend who, along with Jam Hsaio of the Lion band, performed with Dimash several times outside of the competition. And I recommended watching the extended clip of “Opera 2” where Dimash realizes his father is there, simply for their absolutely heartwarming reunion. Thank you from a Florida Dear. And if my first comment miraculously reappears, I apologize for the repetition.

He modulated this 3 times more than the original, half a step each times and the last one is Eb6. What’s more impressive he used mixed voice with chest support instead of going to the easier head voice for that range. And still be able to control it slow and steady (just slightly faster at the last note).

The gentleman who pumped his fist in the air at the end is his father, Kanat. There are 6 to 7 contestants in each episode each one has their own manager/interpreter/host. Dimash got first place in episode 1 (SOS), episode 2 (Opera 2) and episode 6 (Adagio). There are 14 episodes and Dimash performed in each one except episode 11 as he was already in semifinals. Someone has given the list of all the performances with different languages he sang in (6 languages)

That is his Dad in the audience at the end. Dimash did not know that he was there and didn't see him until the end and he was very happy. Dimash has done a D8 in his performance of 'Unforgettable Day' in Gakku. (this is off the piano) He also has an impressive baritone. Week (Episode) 1 SOS in French. Week & Episode 2 Opera 2 Russian. Week 3 The Show Must Go On in English. Week 4 Late Autumn in Mandarin (Chinese) (On Gloria Wu's channel title is Autumn Strong). So you Know, The Non English songs have back story and or Performance with subtitles On Gloria Wu channel with slight change to help avoid copyright problems. Week 5 Uptown Funk in English. Week 6 Adagio in English. Week 7 Daididau in Kazakh. Week 8 Daybreak in Mandarin. Week 9 All By Myself in English. Week 10 Unforgettable Day in Russian or Kazakh. (He composed it as a teenager) Week 11 he didn't perform. Week 12 Confessa (1st verse in Mandarin for the audience, then switched to Italian) plus Diva Dance from the movie the 5th Element. Week 13 Tribute to Michael Jackson duet with Laure Shang in English. MJ was one of Dimash's idols and now Laure works at the record company Dimash signed with after the competition. Week and Episode 14 Give Me Love.

So sorry you have to receive the unkind comments from "pretend dears." People who Dimash calls his Dears are those who not only follow him and love him/his music, but want to use him as an example of how to react with others. So we know that there are people who try to cause a problem. We will love them, too, but they can still hurt when they are uncharitable. Peace from a Maryland Dear.

Well said - what I love about this fandom is that really the absolute majority of people are people embracing others, are willing to learn, are curious, friendly and tolerant the same way as Dimash is himself. Sadly there always will be some people who are not. Still it is amazing such behavior is (maybe vocal) but an exception to the rule especially considering how big, multicultural and how wide the age range of the fandom is.

Thank you! I talked about this at the end of my SOS review a little - I always find the mark of a true fan not only to help make others aware of their artist of choice, but also to reflect well upon the fandom of that artist. The best service one can be to Dimash (or anyone else) is with kindness and not aggression. And my experience with most fellow Dears thus far has been exactly that. Tastes in art of any kind are very personal and different and it is alright not to like something but it does not mean you have have the right to be rude - don't like it simply don't listen.

The hosts are called “music partners” and are singers who were on the roster but did not get selected as contestants. So they get partnered with the contestants and introduce them. They probably do more than just introduce them but I’m not sure how much they are involved with the rest of the work.

Hi Andy, I’ve just come across your Chanel & am impressed with your reaction style & music knowledge. I’m rather fussy as to whom I subscribe to, & I like your style & have immediately subscribed to your Chanel . There are too many cowboys out there with little music knowledge & I feel they just pander to us, the viewers. All I’m after is an honest critique. Yes, Dimas is certainly extraordinary. What a voice. However, I draw your attention to a young Soprano singer by the name of Amira Willighagen who won Holland’s Got Talent at the age of nine, without even a single singing lesson. She taught herself by watching uTube videos featuring the likes of Pavarotti & mimicking mouth movements and breathing techniques. This started as a 7 year old. Just amazing for one so young. This is a rather long post, but please humour me. Since her win, Amira engaged a vocal coach & has since performed in some 20 countries and sung in at least five languages. She is a tie Soprano with a powerful voice & a beautiful range & even in her top register, she does so effortlessly and without straining, unlike other wannabe young opera singers who do their voices & careers harm by attempting to reach those higher notes & trying to sound older than their age. Not so with this GEM. This is only a snippet of Amira’s journey as there is so much more to tell. Anyway, the following are a few performances for your reaction consideration in age order. ... Ave Maria by Gomez at the Canisius Church at age 11. This performance shows at an early age what a magnificent talent this young lady is, with her powerful lice & superb voice control. ... Nella Fantasia at age 12 . I recommend the concert performance. ... Gabriella’s Song at age 14. Again the concert performance. ... Sound of Music medley at age 15. Amira sings about one octave above the original by Julie Andrews and nails it. As a singer & musician, I thought you might be interested in this amazing young soprano with the voice of an angel. The original lyrics and composition is from Vitas a russian singer... He only sings the first operatic "level" (the history is about when the wind blows in a snow storm) , Dimash sings 3 more levels...

Andy - you're doing great, don't listen to the "Grouchy Dears", just block them and move on. They are probably the same few that complain on other reactors videos. I guess they have nothing better to do with their day. This song was in the second episode and he placed first for that week (along with placing first for his performance of SOS). Yes, each singer has their own host to introduce them and take care of them. The high quality of this show with it's wonderful backup band and singers, the wonderful production and how they were all so kind and supportive of each other makes it SO different from the shows in the West. I have watched all the English subtitled shows a couple times through and have enjoyed it immensely.

This was week 2 of The Singer. Week 3 is "The Show Must Go On" by Queen, and week 4 is his first time singing in Mandarin: "Autumn Strong." In other words, he was singing French, Russian, English, and Mandarin to launch his competition. If you add "Eng Sub" after Dimash + song title in the search box, you can usually find a version with English subtitles. You can search Lion Band + Singer 2017 and see what that group performed in competition with Dimash. Their lead singer appeared in Singer 2020 as a soloist.
