In an interview, Angelina said later (then 10yo) about this song: "It means love! Desperate love. It's very special, it's almost voodoo! The original is very nice, and when I scream it is a desperate cry that everyone should love each other."
@jeffstumpf9129
@jeffstumpf9129 3 жыл бұрын
Right there in that quote, Angelina’s childish naïveté reveals itself when she says, “... everyone should love each other”. Yes, in the Christian sense, we should. But, that's not what the song is about. At 8 years old she didn't know about the selfish, hateful, hurtful, and manipulative people out there. Thank God, for that. But by being an Empath, the Narcissists will be seeking her out. Sometimes personal barriers are good for our health.

@@jeffstumpf9129 I read comments and see some reactors saying she shouldn't be singing this song and a few other songs because she hasn't "experienced" these emotions. Yet, like you said, she can interpret the meaning in a more naive way and still project those emotions through a different lens. She obviously feels these emotions just by the way she delivers the song.
@way2deep100
@way2deep100 3 жыл бұрын
@@frankphillips5660 Presumably those same reactors would say she shouldn't have given her shoes away because she hadn't experienced never having shoes. While others may have felt for the little girl and yet walked on by, Angelina felt LIKE the girl for long enough to not want her to feel that way any longer. Maybe it was important to her to feel for the rest of the day like the girl had felt her whole life (I almost typed 'walk in her shoes'). Empaths feel what the rest of us have trouble imagining.

What not so many people knows, is that when Angelina was in pre school age, her mother -on Angelinas demand, took her to the jazz saxophonist Bodhild Niska´s record shop and jazz café, "bare jass" in Oslo - To listen to records of the old masters, or to "lunch concerts" on the small stage in Bodils jazz café. Bodil told that they could be there 3-4 times a week. with Angelina at the age of 5-6 years old listening to the old masters, sometimes for hours. Sadly Bodils jazz café didn´t survive covid lock down. I miss it

Her being able to make the sounds she needed to make the songs believable was what it took to convince her mother she was ready to audition for AGT, which she wanted to do earlier but her mother would not allow it, but once she crossed that threshold her mother had no other plausible arguments against her auditioning for the show, which she won in a landslide which justifies the decision. What blows my mind is how driven and passionate Angelina was at a very early age, we’re talking about a 6 year old who was willing to do what she had to do to realize her dream of being a superstar!

You mentioned her great ears. Connected to a brain that's learned to use whatever vocal talents she possesses. She can connect those soooo well. That's the amazing thing, in my mind. Well... with her 30-40 years of singing experience, this is bound to happen, right? ha ha... You used the word "mimic" and that's the right concept but her ability to add in a musicality far beyond Jay Hawkins' best efforts is beyond mimickry. That's why I argue that she's somehow connected ear to brain to all other parts so well.

Don't forget that she started listening to all the jazz greats since before she turned TWO and not just listening .. she wanted to sing with them .. sound like them .. and she was serious from t the start she was serious about it enough to do it hours a day .. getting her grandmother Meri to play a song over and over and over until she could figure out how to truly sound like Ella .. or Etta .. any and all of the classics .. she loved them all. So she taught herself to adjust her vocal chords and all that goes along with singing .. how to hold her mouth and open the throat and where the tongue goes etc .. until she could sound like them .. and all this was done with passion and unbelievable focus, like few have as adults .. she taught herself to sing in so many ways out of delight and joy. And now we have Angelina .. our beautiful and insanely talented young lady .. who learned passionately from the inside out. Truly truly truly amazing!

This also speaks to the process of the Internet being able to bring us talent unrestricted by producers and record labels that want to mold talent into something that it’s not. The singing competitions, KZbin, twitch, and many other avenues give true talent place to exist for the masses. This will change everything. Being able to see the arc of an artist to the course their lives is very different now.

_"She's fearless."_ I think this is one of the reasons why Angelina is so good now at the age of 15. Many people are afraid and restrictive about everything. They say to themselves: I can't do this, I can't do that, nobody can top the original, or my voice is not good enough, I'm not talented enough, I'm not ready for the stage yet, what would others think of me, I'll do it later,... But Angelina on the other hand made progress at the speed of light, why, because she was fearless, she tackled everything, she tried many different songs in many different styles, she didn't care what others think of her, she isn't afraid of mistakes, she never thought she wasn't ready yet, she always did what she loved to do, she didn't wait for a 100 takes, she left it at 1-2 takes (quote from her former guitarist), she performed on stage since she was like 7 years old, ... and now look at her, she performs like a pro at the age of 15 already, because she's got all that experience. Basically she's a seasoned artist as a child already!, just as you mentioned. And moreover, she proved that age doesn't matter when it comes to being able to move people with your singing.
@wajj1842
@wajj1842 3 жыл бұрын
Very well said! You nailed it. By not being afraid, she was able to make massive strides at a very young age. And as you said, "now look at her". Better than most of the big names that are twice her age. Boggles my mind to think of what she will be as a grown woman. Mainly because I have trouble imagining how she could be better than she is now.
@yiuqwfj
@yiuqwfj 3 жыл бұрын
@@wajj1842 She's perfect as she is of course, but at times she sounds like the child/teenager that she is obiously. Her voice will get fuller and more powerful from this point on, it can only get better as she matures, unless she exerts her vocal chords too much and damages them permanently like Miley Cyrus did. Let's hope not. Well, Miley did a lot of "belting" on stage, unlike Angelina, so it's unlikely that Angelina will overstrain her vocals. On the other hand you'll never know what she will come up next 😄 Maybe she'll do heavier and louder stuff in the future.

@@yiuqwfj I'm not pleased with her TikTok performances, but I understand her need to reach a wider and younger audience. And she's not here to live up to my expectations, nor should she be. When she does a studio production or a music video, they continue to be very classy and professional. Already having a wonderful lower register at such a young age, it will be very interesting to see how that develops as she matures.
@yiuqwfj
@yiuqwfj 3 жыл бұрын
@@wajj1842 Anyhow, her voice is unique and that makes a promising artist. Her TikTok recordings are not meant to be taken seriously, especially since they are only short snippets of songs and not professional recordings. But let me ask you just one question: Despite her TikTok performances not being complete and high-quality and all, have you ever seen better a cappella performances from other artists (without autotune)? The fact that she CAN pull it off is actually a reason for me to be very proud of our Angelina! I don't think there are many others who can emulate that deed. Now, if you accompany Angelina's a cappella singing with an instrument or backing track you'll realize that she's often perfectly in tune! It amazes me every time! Examples: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHitnKSmhKl6q6s (I'm a fool to want you) kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqjWnXSgib95gdE (When we were young) kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2TSnalsg7eFa8k (Mercy) Secondly, her posts are this girl's way to stay in touch with us, her fans, and greet us. I don't need a perfect recording. She already did many home recordings when she was a little child and shared them with us. You might know of her indoor performance of "My funny Valentine" for instance, the sound quality is bad, but it's extremely touching. Her TikTok posts make me happy, because I can see that she's doing fine. I would look at it from this side. Well that's what I think.

It brings me so much joy. It's like musical theater. My very favorite EVER of this cover. Thank you so much for your very interesting reaction to our Princess Angelina. Josh, sir, here is a story about this special video, put together from interviews of the band members and a little bit of assumption: Angelinas parents had rented the studio including the band. As you know, at that point in time AJ was already a superstar in Scandinavia, and also declared by all Norwegians their National Treasure. I have to assume, that her dad rented the studio, because he has an other name. She came in, rearranged the song and gave that to the studio boss as her "wishes", as you saw, first he was not so sure, but after reading he smiled with respect. The band members thought it to be a joke for the little girl. Here I have to assume again, because she introduced herself to all musicians and shook hands, I assume, she used her real name (Angelina Jordan Astar), not her stage name (Angelina Jordan). BUT according to the band members, 30 seconds into the song, it occurred to them who they were working with. As she never bossed them around, only asked them, if this, or that, please? and her "wishes" made uncanny sense, these guys nicknamed her THE BOSS, it is sticking to her to this day. Musicians around the world, who works or had worked with her call her respectfully the boss. At Republic Records, she is THE BOSS of her production in the same charming, disarming way. She even directs her music videos, sketching the storyboards and so on. Sir, You and yours, please stay save and sound, German greetings.

Die gleiche Typen shimpfen inzwischen auf die amerikanische Musikindustrie,"What you hear on your Radio day by day, is absolutly crap, shallow crap, man I tell you".Sinngemäss habe ich das von verschiedenen Reactors hehört.

I first found out about Angelina through this song over a year ago and I have been a huge fan ever since. Sometimes people describe a singer's voice as a musical instrument. Angelina's voice is not A musical instrument, it is a collection of musical instruments! As you pointed out, her ability to create different tones and sounds is incredible, and to do it with such control especially at the age of 9 ... all you can say, which was the first word you said when the song was done is WOW!!

Said it over and over Angelina was born to sing...period. And all that comes along with that fact she gives to us. My favorite singer was meant to sing to the world and she felt that at a very young age. We are watching that dream become a reality before our eyes. Angelina is very special and quite the phenom. Thumbs up Josh.

Angelina is such a remarkable person, not just because she sings like a goddess of music (if there is such a thing...well there is now); any visit with her is a very special treat, replacing all that nasty rhetoric that seems so abundant in the media of late, with her warm tones from old classics. She rejuvenates my every day and I truly feel blessed every time I get to hear her lovely voice. She keeps me digging for new and different ways to express my love and appreciation for how she sings, what she represents, a single word, love.

If there ever was a reason to believe in something greater than us, or in reincarnation, Angelina Jordan is definitely it. She truly has the rare ability to connect with us, from her soul to ours, through her music, so we not only hear her magical voice, but also, feel it too. **Really enjoyed your reaction & commentary**

Great reaction! This is absolutely one of her best recordings! How she can make a show out of a cover, just with her voice, is a mystery to me! She is maybe the most versatile singer out there, in many ways! A chameleon, as you said. Maybe it is too soon for you, but being a classical singer I suspect you to like "Song for A" very much, because of her clear melancholic voice, which sounds very professional!

I like that fact that you call it her version. I've heard nina Simone, Bette Midler, Annie Lennox and the original and thsi version is not a cover ( I am unsure what cover as most singers do not write their own material). It is uniquely Ms. Jordan and unmatched. She does that with most songs I have heard.

If this impressed you, take a look at her version of "I Who Have Nothing", possibly her first studio session at only 6 years old. She is just a fidgety and unsure child - but obviously with firm ideas! Her reaction when she has cleared the first passage is priceless: An excited skip and a wonky-toothed grin "Hey - I can do this. This is FUN!"

Big smile on my face a the 5 minute mark: "This guy has done so much preparation, and he thinks he's ready... hahaha." Good comment on AJ's ear for music, but more than that, she was faithful to the song's *meaning* unlike Annie Lennox and Nina Simone, who just used it as a platform for their vocal talents. Hello, Josh. Thank you for continuing your journey of discovering Angelina. Yes, she was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you have continued your journey of discovering Angelina, you will have come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured. She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener. In this video, did you notice:Angelina finishing some notes and handing them to the music director, who smiled as he read them? They were her wishes (instructions) to the band how she wished therm to play the music. Then there was a brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, a well known and respected Iranian artist, who is also Angelina's maternal grandmother and the person who encouraged Angelina in her love of music, especially jazz. O course, you recognised that there was a picture of Hawkins on the candle she was holding. And the fact that during the last time she sang "because you're mine" she rose on to her toes. Lastly, did you notice how the "performing" Angelina, singing at a level of maturity far beyond her years, suddenly became a 9-year-old child almost instantaneously once she finished singing. From the time I first heard Angelina, way back at her first audition on Norway's Got Talent, she has amazed me. Great reaction! For me her version (I believe she was the first to ever record this song) of "I'm still holding out for you" (There is a whole story about this song and nobody really knows why it wasn't release but it is probably a copyright issue). She was 10 when she recorded that track and it is absolutely mind blowing. It is one if not the her most professional (or polished) release from her early career. The video a a fan made video so just a juxtaposition of photos and video excerpts from other content from her.

Thank you very much for your reaction and analysis of this performance. 2 videos at the the age of 9 that you definitely should react to. Your are probably familiar with why Angelina sings with no shoes when doing that in public. Angelina wrote a book about that encounter with the shoeless orphan girl that was published when she was 9 years old. In the first video kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5SmfXePZaiGkJo she was interviewed about that book by TV host Anne Lindmo and in the second video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYHJfq2Dmqd_mNE she performed a short clip of Unchained Melody. These 2 videos not only give us a glimpse of Angelina Jordan the artist but also give us a glimpse of Angelina Jordan the loving, caring, and compassionate human being from a very young age. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Angelina said this is a song about "desperate love." How can she know these things! You are so right about her being fearless, a fearless explorer of her own voice. How many times she must have listened to Screamin' Jay. And look at the band she has behind her! I love the way she builds it up to a climax in the middle and then back down again. In that ending, you notice she really doesn't need any instrumentation at all to hide behind, to prop her up. You might take a look at her cover Etta James' I Rather Go Blind or Lana Del Rey Born to Die. For chronology, next you should do her 10 year old I Feel Good, either one of the versions, but I like the one in the round with a huge audience. Be well.
