Hi Bruno, That's an interesting question, I have to admit I wasn't quite sure either. It is well described on wikipedia (NL): Horses had tails docked for cosmetic and practical reasons. This was already done in antiquity and from the 16th and 17th centuries tail docking was common. The tail was cut off with a cleaver, after which the wound was burned with a burning iron. In the mid-18th century, and into the 20th century, docked tails were fashionable on horses. It was then that the first scissors were also developed. Tail docking in draft horses was done for practical reasons. While working in the fields, the horse wags its tail to scare flies away. When swinging, it regularly happened that the reins used to guide the horse got under the tail, making the horse uncontrollable. With a short tail one did not have this problem. However, the horse was much less able to defend itself against fly nuisance. Since 2001 it has been prohibited by law in the Netherlands and Belgium to dock tails on horses.
