Mix hasn't fallen off. He has a real estate portfolio in the Seattle area that's in the tens of millions. He owns a studio that many Seattle area musicians use and he's the second generation of hip hop that learned from the mistakes of the first and current. To own your own art. He chooses to stay in Seattle and is a well know charitable and humble guy there.

The point is to own the publishing. The last time I checked, Michael Jackson's estate STILL owns the rights to the Beatles song catalog, 30 years later. Yes, they have the rights to every song and they give permission for it to be used in commercials, movies etc... And when it's played on radio etc... they get paid. And since Michael Jackson died 2009, his estate has earned 600 million dollars in revenue from the publishing! It doesn't matter if Sir Mix-A-Lot is worth 1 million or 1 billion, as long as he owns his music, he'll continue to get paid.

Rick Rubin created the "boom bap" sound in hip hop that became popular during the Golden Age. It's why I push back on Lord Jamar saying that whites are guests in hip hop. Guests don't lay the foundation of the house or renovate the house. They come in and chill or enjoy what'd already built. Rubin is an integral part of the classic hip hop sound. And he helped to bring in rock audiences, which one could argue saved hip hop from falling into obscurity and helped it to leave New York. Before Rick Rubin, rap music was basically an extension of disco, where the MCs rapped in sing-song cadences over live instrumentation. Rubin brought in the 808s ("boom") and the hard, clapping snares ("bap").

Uh, people?! Baby got back is a legendary track that did not not fizzle out and disappear even in 2014. Though he has dropped other classics that actually proceeded it, that one track has been extremely lucrative in royalty checks for him for over 20 years. Don't compare him to any hip hop artist who has not done that yet. You'd be surprised to see whose poppin' now but will never have 1/10 of what Sir-mix-a lot has made (and still counting).

The song "Posse On Broadway" by Sir Mix Alot had 808's way before Kanye had "808's and Heart breaks". Jim Jones sampled that beat so you know Sir Mix Alot got paid from that also.

WTF....Posse on Broadway was actually LATE with the 808's...by the time that song had came out in 1988 the 808 craze was dead....808's was 1984-1987 listen to Beastie Boys-License to Ill, Whoudini, Run DMC those old NY rap albums from 84-87 were HEAVY 808 .....Sir Mixx A Lot was from Seattle so they were kinda slow and late.....by the time Posse on Broadway came out NYC had moved on to sampling old funk drums like James Brown

For those folks saying that Mix is a one hit wonder, that shows that you must be part of the pop crowd that ironically has kept this song relevant for over 20 years. Mix has a few hits before Baby Got Back blew up. Posse On Broadway and Square Dance Rap are classics. Swass (released 2 years before Baby got back) went platinum. Nicki sampling Baby Got Back just means that he's gonna see a nice jump in his royalties from it because of the stannish nature of her fans and the overkill from it getting played on pop stations 10 times a day lol

I'll admit Baby Got Back is the only song by him that I know. But I never thought he was a one hit wonder. I've just never listened to his other music. And I recognize that the trashy rappers in today's time such as Nikki or Cardi B are nowhere near on the level of rappers like Sir-Mix-A-Lot or even Missy Elliott. Anybody who thinks Mix A Lot ain't got guap is surely sleeping. Dude has been paid and still is. Owning his publishing is super smart. Baby Got Back gets played so much on theatrical trailers, commercials, whatever that you know dude's been eating good off of it. All it takes is that one ubiquitous hit and you will be set for life if your paperwork is straight. Pharrell's "Happy" is gonna be one of those songs. Of course you hear it in commercials now but I guarantee that joint is gonna be played like that for years to come. If Pharrell retires now, I bet he will be eating off of Happy for the rest of his life. Not even counting other hits he's been a part of.

The best thing a young artist can do is get a two drop deal and then get that one hit to make it big and then tour like hell and start a label and go solo after getting raped for a year or so by the label.

For anyone stumbling upon this in 2019 keep in mind that SMA did the right thing by owning is publishing rights, but that's not the full equation. A little known fact is that Macklemore (also Seattle-based, btw) went mainstream owning almost every right to their music. Nearly everyone big owns publishing rights if they wrote the song, that's cool, but when you own the music (masters) you collect ALL of the income. Publishing, royalites, merchandising, tours, .etc. Record companies don't allow this, this is where they make the majority of their money. Well, let me correct that, royalties are where they USED to make the majority of their money. Now you have something called 360 deals (like Wayne, Nikki & Drake signed) which give them royalties, publishing, touring and merchandise. Never, ever sign a 360 deal. You're getting screwed. You may get away with owning publishing, but you will lose the one massive income producing vehicle you have (touring). Touring is where musicians make their money. How would you like knowing you dropped a platinum album (downloads + physical sales) where you knew you weren't ever going to make a cent after costs anyway and then find out your worldwide tour that raked in $100m just netted you $5m after costs? That's what happens when you sign 360 deals, you walk away with very little. The YoungMoney team is doing OK, don't get me wrong, but wouldn't you say Drake's generated at least $500m in revenue throughout his career between tours, album sales, merchandising, residuals (publishing royalties) and licensing? Easy. Do you think he's worth even $50m? No. That's the problem. So people, take a page from Mix and Macklemore and own everything. Partner only with the people that can help you get radio (that's what Macklemore did) and make kick ass music and tour. Then you'll really be rich.

The term one hit wonder is usually referring to the pop charts and he only had one pop/crossover hit. Now I grew up listening to Swass and Seminar in the late 80s, so I know Mix-a-Lot already had his hip-hop cred well established before Baby Got Back... But considering the way the term is almost always used, he qualifies as a one hit wonder. As an example from a different genre, the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden has only had one top ten hit in their home country and none in America... they would be considered one hit wonders when looking at the British singles charts... But they've been together for almost 40 years, sold over 100 million albums and still sell out arenas and stadiums around the world. Are they 'one hit wonders'? Well sure, but they are also still remarkably successful and wealthy. Hit singles aren't the only measure of success.

Mix's shit was always clean sounding. He definately was a pioneer as far being diversified at getting paper.Never came off as some ghetto ass rapper spitting nonsense. Always had intelligent, witty lyrics. And as i remember, was one of the first cats rockin foriegn whips with exotic wheels. I laugh at people making broke comments about this man. He Has classic bonafied hip-hop hits under his belt. Im not a nicki fan but im glad to see mix get his paper.

I have been a Mix-a-lot fan since a friend gave me Seminar in High School. I was a "rap show" DJ on a college radio station in 1991 when Mack Daddy came out. I only added the song "Mack Daddy" to my playlist until I heard a buzz about "Baby Got Back" from other students. It was funny to be ahead of the curve and miss it.

I appreciate how Mix references the influence Kraftwerk had on his music. Kraftwerk influenced most of early hip hop from the East Coast to the West Coast and everywhere in between. Mix's early recordings were Techno Hop joints (think Egyptian Lover, Unknown DJ, Rodney O and other West Coast pioneers), but before Baby Got Back blew up, California and the whole southern US blacked out over Square Dance Rap

As a kid, I thought the "Baby Got Back" song was silly. I mean it's a song about butts, that's really weird. As a teenager, I still thought the song was funny, but I did not want to listen to it in polite company. Nowadays, I still see humor in it, but I've found myself connecting to it more and more. As an Animator drawing attractive anime girls, I discovered my favorite type are the "Thicc" types. In other words, "itty bitty waist, round thing in your face." On a similar note, it seems more and more western folks on websites, such as Twitter, are confused as to what "Thicc" and "Curvy" means. A lot of them believe this means fat or chubby, and that's just not true. This song perfectly describes them as having not fat, but "big healthy butts". Combined with the small waist description and the upfront message of "I like big butts" the song is a perfect tool to use when describing the appearance and appeal of Thicc and Curvy women.
