TRUE... I actually find el dorado as an EXO anthem talking about their journey together to el dorado (a golden city that no one has ever seen but they believe exists) representation of their success, it's unsure but they have faith that it will happen.

To be honest, not all art has to have a definite meaning or depth to it. Sometimes, you want to just relax and listen to some lighthearted music without overthinking things and sometimes you want songs with depth and I think Exo discography balances this for me and that is why I can't get over their immense talent.

As you know, El Dorado is a mythical city made of gold. The Spanish conquerors started the rumor of the city, after learning of the Indian king El Dorado who, according to the legend, was covered in gold. So what you saw as part of the background in this performance, was in the beginning the golden gates of the city were there and as the performance went on the gates opened to reveal the mountain and SM's depiction of what they think the city might look like. That is why EXO was all in gold outfits, and I think the lights they danced around were to represent objects they had to navigate through in their search for the city. Finding the city is thought to possibly help to reveal something they need or clues to help them locate the Tree of Life, etc. At the end when they make the X with the light sticks it's to represent the X in EXO, but it's also to represent the X you would find on a treasure map that marks where the treasure would be. In the end X marks the spot and EXO is the treasure. LOL Legends have it that it's a magical city that can only be found by those who it wants to find it and some stories say it could have something to do with aliens or otherworldly beings. That's why this song works so well for EXO because EXO's origin story is that they are aliens from Planet Exo who came to Earth with superpowers in order to protect the mythical Tree of Life. That's why in this song some of the English lines are "Sail, sail, sail ... got to go, go, go" ... "got to find, find, find ... El Dorado," etc. In real life, explorers and Indiana Jones-type treasure hunters are always searching for the lost city of El Dorado thinking if they ever find it, it will be the key to riches and gold. There have been several fictional movies made about the search for El Dorado and there even have been TV programs and documentaries, etc. about real life explorers who have searched for the city thinking they can prove it was a real place and, at least in part, the stories could be true. I think in reality El Dorado was a Mayan city that was located on or near a gold minefield and so the city and Inca people who lived there were rich with golden objects made from the tribe's gold. So treasure hunters and explores are looking to find the city's location in the hopes of finding the hidden treasure left behind by its ancient inhabitants, etc. EXO's "EL Dorado" performance is also what has been said, inspired Disney to ask SM and EXO to produce the song and MV for "Lightsaber." Fun fact: Disney has also done adaptations of the El Dorado story over the years with movies and TV shows, etc. This was only one song out of a 4 or 5 song set in a concert where they probably performed 20 to 30 songs for 3+ hours straight. So, if you think this performance was epic, just wait until you see the full concert. :D And yes, this was 100% live. As you know, one thing SM is known for is its vocal powerhouses and that all of its artists are amazing singers and dancers. The company focuses heavily on producing some of the best vocalists in the industry. So much so, that even the company's rappers are amazing vocalists. And they are known for the fact that their groups sing live. SM artist train from day one so that they are able to sing live while performing extremely complex choreography and still sound flawless. That is why SM is one of the biggest and most influential entertainment companies in Korea and around the world.

The pictures for the lyric video is from their EXODUS album which EL DORADO is in, and each member pretty much travelled to a different country for their teasers and photoshoot. I still think to this day the preparation and teasers for this album is the best they have done. And there were loads of riddles we had to solve to be able to see each member’s teaser

el dorado is so painful to watch during a pandemic bc it always makes me desperately wish i were there in the audience, taking it all in... i think exols like el dorado so much not only bc of the vocals and general talent of EXO but bc of the amazing stage design, pyrotechnics and props, the flags, and the sound design (it's a little hard to notice, but they added extra choral backing that wasn't in the original track for this performance!). they really put on an impressive performance all-around.
