Your work is amazing 🤩! But, as a Spanish speaker, I have to say our /a/ is not a spread /ɐ/ as in "bUs", but the difference is in that the jaw drops more. I've listened from more fronted /a/ to more back /ɑ/ As and people will perfectly understand cause there's no other vowel with which it can be mistaken. In unstressed position it sounds like /ɐ/ as in "bUs" or even like schwa /ə/ as in "About."

The Spanish O is between the English OH and AW, just like its E which is between AY and EH. By the way, I would add two more vowels, the E in "Línea" and the O in "Coacción" which seem to be more raised, like closer to I and U respectively, so they'd be 7 vowels.

Hi, thanks for video. Some good information. One thing I would suggest is a little slower on the pronounciation and also taking a little more time in between them. The concepts you talk about are some what difficult, in that they're not that familiar. This may just be me, but I found it difficult to keep up and properly pronounce and follow before you began the next example.

/u/ is a unrounded [w] and there's no long vowel so no [i:] and short vowels becoming long before voiced consonants.

What about the \ou\ strong-weak diphthong, as in estadounidense?

*****: Thank you, Gabriel. I believe there's no pronunciation rule that says that it is not pronounced as a diphthong. The diphthong \ou\ DOES exist in Spanish, but only in directly (or nearly so) adopted foreign words and in words created from combinations such as this. So one might say that \ou\ doesn't "naturally" occur in Spanish, but it does exist and it is pronounced as a diphthong when it occurs. See, e.g., www.enla.net/diptongo-ou/.

That's not a real diphthong... since it's /ou/ rather than /ow/...
@Mirador1
@Mirador1 3 жыл бұрын
@@Emile.gorgonZola They are equivalent, since /ou/ is actually [o̞u̯], and [u̯] is the same as [w], just like [i̯] is the same as [j].
