Sisi led a really troubling life, with reoccurring tragedy, the biggest being the loss of her only son. But also her death was a big tragedy. Come and find out more about her life!
No other empress is as famous as Sisi. After marrying Emperor Franz Joseph, Sisi moved to the capital city of Vienna, the residence of the imperial family. Many places are living reminders of the tragic monarch.
Above all, of course, the two residences where visitors can walk so wonderfully in Sisi's footsteps: Schönbrunn Palace and the Imperial Palace. When the keen traveler Sisi was in Vienna, she lived here with her husband, the children and a giant royal household. Schönbrunn Palace Park is also home to the Imperial Coach Collection; an area of the exhibition is dedicated specially to the Austrian empress.

For the first 15 years of her life, my grandmother was a subject of Austria-Hungary (both of my parents are Austro-Hungarian) and I remember my grandmother telling me how beautiful Sisi was, and how she was loved. Even though my grandmother immigrated to the USA at age 16, to her dying day, she remained a royalist.

Yes my family as well, before the commis divided that part of Europe. Actually, I'm from Transilvania. I met someone like that in Hungary a few years back who left Hungary at age 17 and never really took to America and told us she wanted to re-establish back in her native Hungary. She seemed the unhappy where-ever u are type : ))

@Ber P. Unpopular in Austria maybe, but Hungarians loved her as she loved the country (even if, according to some sources, it was only out of an act of rebellion against her aunt) and did much for it by influencing her husband, leading to the Austro-Hungarian Compromise.

I feel for Sisi. She had a hard life, on the outside was beautiful and literally dripping with diamonds at times. But so broken on the inside. All royals had to give up so much and could never appear weak or human like must of been so hard. I can relate on the loss of a child. Even with other children a mother is always heartbroken. I feel a strong connection to her. May god rest her beautiful soul.

Maybe Sisi's inner lack of peace had it roots from Bavarian royal family's (Wittelsbach) madness? Who knows. It was really pity! And still, Austrian and Hungarian people really loved Sisi. Eljen, Erszebet! Sisi made short career in politics too, supporting her husband. She even learned Hungarian language, to keep a speech in Budapest Parliament. Count Andrassy was her friend in higher level there. And one thing too, it is really hard to any mother to lose her own child by suicide, as Sisi lost her son in Mayerling tragedy. And finally, when Emperor Franz Joseph heard that her wife was stabbed to death, he mourned: - Fate didn't save me from this too...

I agree that Sisi loved her husband. She used to write him long affectionate letters even after 40 years of a troubled marriage. Only she didn't share his physical passion. Perhaps Sisi was asexual or perhaps she was deeply hurt that she was so cared for only because of her good looks. It seems that Franz Joseph never tried to understand her... But still, he also cared for her and loved her in his naive way. No need to judge them, no one is perfect.

@Lisa Mathis Introverts fall in love as well as extroverts.But she never had any liaison, all her good looks and low morals among royals given. Looks like she wasn't even in love with anyone after her failed teenage love with Franz Joseph. We will never know whether she was really asexual, or she was just too depressed and unlucky.

We only had like 3 or 4 hobbies in common, didn’t share the same type of friends either…I don’t think she loved him though. I did love my ex…despite the differences and yes he asked me out first, as shy as I am I would’ve never and have never asked someone out.

Applying 20th-21st century standards of morality, physical and mental health, fitness, diet, nutrition, exercise, etc. on 19th century people is the road to anachronistic nowhere. Not to mention standards of physical beauty, especially for women. She lived a much better life on the whole than 99.99% of all the other humans on earth at that time, male or female. She died a tragic and senseless death. Give the woman a break. RIP.

@@GFSLombardo I'm applying 21st century standards to 21st century reporting. Anorexia is a terrible mental disorder and the way she is described today is sickening. I'm also not shaming her--I myself have suffered from anorexia and I know it is an illness, not a choice.
@sheilatuano9633
@sheilatuano9633 5 жыл бұрын
Photoshoplilli , perhaps, it was the vogue of her time and never realized it was anorexia. The social pressure placed on her must have made it necessary that she has to maintain that kind of looks because she knows it is part and parcel of being a public figure. Having been taught the rigors of being an empress, she might have realized the advantage of "catching the attention" for political advantage which unfortunately includes her physical appearance as a woman....

Sisi of Austria was a really remarkable woman, you get a feeling that her beauty shone from the inside out, and that's, in my opinion, why she holds such a grip on the imagination. I would recommend watching a 2009 movie in two parts called Sisi, starring Cristiana Capotondi in the lead role, for a nice dramatisation of the empress's life in the Habsburg court.

If I remember correctly though is that during the audio tour they said that because people found her so beautiful, she was so focused on her health. And she barely ate. I think she was anorexic. That for me made it all extremely sad, her beauty. That she felt like she had to live up to what everyone thought of her. And thank you for that movie suggestion, never heard of it! I do still love the old trilogy.

Elisabeth was assassinated on the 10th of September 1898. She was 60 years old, not 61 years. I think Elisabeth was in love with Frans Josef in the first years of her marriage. But because of her mother in law Sophie (she was called the true empress because of the influence she had on her son Frans Josef) and because of the affairs he had she wasn't in love with him anymore. She traveled a lot and was sometimes away for a few years. At later age she arranged a mistress for him Katharina Schratt. Katharina Schratt was called 'the uncrowned empress of Austria'. Elisabeth could now travel arround without feeling of guilt.

There is a false statement in this video about Sissi's teeth. The docent in the video says she had good teeth. Not true. In fact her autobiography states that her teeth were very bad and were painful to her. This is why she was never photographed or painted showing her teeth. I don't believe the woman who claimed to be an expert on her was one at all because she would have known this.

Elle se fichait royalement de son peuple, laissait le pauvre empereur François Joseph constamment seul en se promenant dans le monde entier. Elle n'a rien d'admirable, en ce qui me concerne. Wouldn’t the speaker mean Sissi led a “troubled” life ? She kept saying “troubling”, didn’t sound right.

Fairies don't exist, Prince Charming is not a prince and is rarely charming, witches aren't necessarily evil and is not desirable to be a princess. Knights in shining armor don't exist, and if you meet one, be weary because he probably spends too much time polishing said armor to care about anything else, sadly.

Sisi's troubles began the day she was married and placed under the thumb of her new mother-in-law, while her new momma's-boy husband did nothing to protect Sisi.

He had no other choice he believed his mother was doing good and he didn’t realize until he was too late, he wasn’t with his mother or Sisi 24/7, and he obviously knew is mother more he didn’t know Sisi as much so of course he would trust his mother more than her.

Personal belongings cannot give you an insight into someones personality and to make a statement like this is not only arrogant, but treats the audience as fools.

Personal belonging give you a great insight into people! Have you never loved someone? You notice all the things they keep around them… those items give away so much of who that person is.

When Sissi was stabbed her body died of course but her spirit travelled into another body, my body to be exact! I am still a free spirit, love my long hair although not as long as it was then! I have a book about that life of mine written by author, Joan Haslip. I know what I am saying sounds crazy, but when I was doubting this truth, I was visited by an Angel in my dream who said "You are Empress Elizabeth "! I was afraid to doubt it after this experience. Having read the book, I can relate to a lot of what was written as I have had the same life tests in this life! 😁

Why do people who are not Austrian have to get involved with our culture, heritage and society. It would be better for such people to concentrate on their own culture, heritage and society, like that of Africa.

Why do they wash their hair every 2 weeks.. the scalp becomes too sticky and itchy even after 3 days..
@ladythalia227
@ladythalia227 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, that has to do with how often we wash our hair nowadays. The more you wash it the more grease the scalp produces. If you leave it alone it will self clean. Obviously not as clean as ours today but cleaner than our would be if we suddenly stopped washing it

That’s only for people with either straight hair or looser waves. With some other hair types they need the natural hair oil
