Siskel and Ebert gave both the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Home Alone a thumbs down in 1990?

In 1990 Siskel and Ebert gave the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie two thumbs down. This really doesn’t surprise me, since Turtlamania was almost defined by a generational chasm between adults and children….however, their reasons for rejecting the film were baffling….almost completely ignorant of the film itself. In doing my research I was amused and surprised to find they also btoh rejected Home Alone, the most famous and popular movie to come out that same year. Their reasons for rejecting that movie, however, were just as baffling. What’s going on here? I think I have an idea.

i started a similar series called SISKEL AND EBERT WERE WRONG, but only did one episode which was on SLEEPERS. TMNT was meant to be the follow up but i never got it out, and now im not because this one NAILED IT!!! You deserve more subs this was great, SUBBED

I had sorta “aged out” by time the Turtles came about (I’m 48 now) I would’ve been 15-16 in 1990… so the movie and franchise never really resonate with me.

I watch the video once to enjoy it (and I do) Then I watch it a second time later trying to make a good comment, and I find little jokes and visual gags that I missed the first time. Great work as always! I kept getting confused though in this video as I think you are talking about Ninja Turtles, then i find out you switched over to Home Alone. Then when I think you are talking about home Alone, I got confused when Ebert was talking about Dark Sewers (I didn't remember dark sewers in Home Alone) Then I found out the topic switched back to Ninja Turtles again. Kind of confusing there.

Fun video. Yeah I have to agree that Siskel clearly didn't watch the movie. It almost sounds like he's describing the second one at times but it definitely wasn't the first one. And Ebert and the whole it looked like the video game? What the heck is he talking about? And how do they not at least mention Jim Henson's involvement? Strange and poor job fellas.

There are movies that some reviews are clearly not meant to be the target audience. Take a 10 to 12 year old back in the day and see how they feel

90s hating on Ninja Turtles whilst not understanding it because kids liked it was the cool thing for years even the gaming magazines did it. Like Sega Power magazine who rated the Megadrive one 2/5 calling ot unimagative yet gave games like Pit Fighter and Rastan Saga 2 3/5. But this is same peopple who only rated gunstar heros a 74% aka the we dint really play the game and just gave it a score to not upset companys rating. Proof of this was they called it a platform game when theres only one part with platforming in whole game and said it only had 4 levels.

Righteous work, dude! I really loved the first TMNT movie. I still remember the moment Raph yelled "Damn" at the first of the movie and during the fight with Casey Jones. My Dad shifted uncomfortably in his seat...eyeing an exit strategy if things got worse. (As you probably remember, in the late 80's/early 90's, parents were just learning how to deal with cartoons and animatronics that used salty language...blurring the line for what is meant for a child/adult...like Bart or Raph. Obviously tame for today's parents and standards. Later, brotha!

This was the opening of another negative reviewer in 1990 for Entertainment Weekly. She sounds insufferable lol.
