Sega Genesis games from my Christmas past

Let me take you on a nostalgic journey to Christmases past, where I will discuss all of the very best SEGA Genesis game’s that Santa Clause brought me between the years 1989 and 1995. While this is not an exhaustive list of the best Genesis games ever released to target the holiday sales season, or even my favorite games, or even all of the games I ever got for Christmas…..it’s the best I can do with my old, fading memory. These are the one’s that REALLY stuck with me over the years, for better and for worse. Some are great, like Mickey’s Castle of Illusion, and others…. like Spider-Man or T2 the arcade game…..are a lot less great. But somehow, still extremely memorable.

My older brother got the Genesis in 89 I will never forget the "Rise from your Grave" line from Altered Beast. I never touched my NES after that lol

True! 😂 My copy of Phantasy Star IV was already banged up from the store. I was really disappointed in that comparing it to my copy of Phantasy Star 2. It was such an amazing game, but SEGA treated it like it was a sample or something. I paid like $90 US dollars! Thanks for watching champ! 😎

I also like the look of the Golden Axe! But I really think the new Shinobi game might be great. It’s being developed by Lizard cube, who did the remake of Wonderboy III and Streets of Rage 4. Thanks for watching dude! 😎

Pre-sonic Genesis was such a unique vibe. It was very Sci-fi fantasy oriented with lots of weird Japanese games. Post-Sonic Genesis was definitely more about Sports games and Mortal Kombat with the blood code. That was my impression at the time. It was cool to see the Genesis become more popular, but it was weird that it was basically an entirely new culture at the same time. I never actually owned a Sonic game until I was in my 20s. I think it was an act of rebellions. 😆 Thanks for watching dude 😎

I can't remember the year it was, but my grandma got me the sega genesis sonic bundle and it was probably the happiest Christmas of my life. My grandma is stick kicking it playing video games too, she is in her 80's and playing Baldur's Gate 3.

Her favorite game is definitely Civilization, she has been playing that for years and probably has thousands of hours on it. She also plays Hearthstone quite a bit, usually in wild mode because she is stubborn and won't update her favorite decks.

A most excellent video. We're the exact same age! '91 was all about Sonic 1 and TJ&E for me. '92 was all about The Menacer and that 'bug&cookie' game (one of the six included games). Also Sonic 2. '93 was all about Jurassic Park and Aladdin. And by '94 it was alot of random games, mainly hockey games, because I was in an in-line roller hockey league. I forgot about Jurassic Park! That was relevant for me too. I actually really liked that one. Its extremely hard and wonky but I thought it captured the right mood and you never knew what was going to happen next.

Maximum Carnage was sooo sick! I put that game on layaway at Wal-Mart cause I needed that red SNES launch cartridge! And yeah, an amazing soundtrack. Merry Christmas!!

Merry Christmas dude! 😎 Maximum Carnage seemed like such a big deal at the time. Its funny to see the game treated like it was “just another bad old video game”, when it was actually such a hit. I hindsight its not that good but I loved it!

The only Sega genesis game I remember buying was Golden Axe. We were Super Nintendo kids, but we did have a brief Mortal Kombat phase on the genesis. But I have to admit the genesis has better hardware than SNES, as illustrated by all the new games the genesis is getting these days. You didn't like Aladdin on the genesis? I bought a cart of that not too long ago. I liked it.

I was actually really disappointed by Aladdin on the Genesis as a kid. I really did get it that Christmas and I thought it was decent but not what the critics and game journalists were saying. They made it sound like Mario Brothers level gameplay with next gen graphics. The graphics were very good, but the game was also really hard to follow in places with so much stuff going on, and in terms of gameplay I think its a run of the mill British micro computer game but on the Genesis: lots of sloppy platforming, lots of grabbing collectibles, blazing speed, and ridiculous stuff….like drops of water…..will kill you. No one ever talked about Capcom’s Aladdin game the same way they did the Genesis but I played it at a friends house and it just seemed so much more fun! 😆 Thanks for watching dude! 😎

I was actually planning, and did a lot of the writing for, a huge video comparing the Genesis and the SNES across several Christmas’s……but it was going to be like a 90 minute video and making the Yuji Naka video took way more time than anticipated.
