This was a great video! I’m 33 & also have ADHD (doctor diagnosed lol) & I’m starting a college course for 911 dispatch this January. What you said made SO much sense to me. I can’t wait to get dug in to a hyper focus on this! The main issue I’ve had at jobs in the past has been that I feel like it’s just not important, so I always start off all star & then taper out because it feels like there’s no purpose to what I’m doing. This made me so much more excited for my future career! Thank you ✌🏻

Im a 911 operator in my town. Its mentally exhausting and one better have thick skin because you take alot of abuse from callers. Evening tour was rough but now that I have enough seniority, I'm finally on day tour. During the covid we worked really short and couldn't get any days approved. You are spot on about everything.

The ADD aspect of this sounds great to me. I love multi-tasking. Seeing you smiling and getting excited when talking about the multi-tasking is super relatable. I think it's the reason I've been in the restaurant/bar industry for so long. I got a job offer in the last couple of weeks and am looking forward to starting training. I'm hoping that the multi-tasking of this job will be really stimulating and make the job engaging and fun for me, even as I have some hesitation about the emotional weight of some of the work.

I know this is an old video, but I am in the process of applying and interviewing for a police dispatcher job. I was fired from my job in insurance earlier this year. I have ADHD as well and I was actually concerned that I would set myself up for failure. BUT I have always succeeded when I worked in super chaotic environments. My job in insurance wasn’t so much chaotic as it was overwhelming due to being overloaded with work that you didn’t have enough time to complete and it would build up bigger every day. Thank you for this video!

As a former fire rescue dispatcher in Miami, FL this was definitely on point. I'd like to add memory and good retention is critical!! The hardest part of the job for me was that and the trainers who, like you said, couldn't handle stress well. I had one call me names and put her hands on me. Crazy! I will say though, it is CRUCIAL to have a relationship with God. Idk how ppl do it without Him tbh. I cried and prayed sooooo much while I worked there. My relationship with God was/is my lifeline. I'm a little nervous because I'm going through the process again with a much smaller city but this time its police and fire all together. I'm still praying and trusting God that if its His will this is where I'll stay♥️

@doodlegoose22622 жыл бұрын
Ok first, you don’t need 20/20 vision to be a dispatcher. Yes, there’s a lot of training, you’re in a life saving career, and training is on going. It can take someone several months before they are on their own, and in my state you’re not on your own until you pass state certification . But training does not stop there, there are constant update to protocols, you have to keep up your certifications. So yes a lot of time is spent training. As to your seniority and days off, it might be that way at your department but it’s not the same at every department so that’s not pertinent information. Our dispatchers swap shifts all the damn time. Duh working holidays, 911 is 24/7/365, yeah you’re going to have to work at least some holidays. There’s no shift biding in our department. It’s 2 days on 2 off, and every other weekend is a 3 day weekend off. Now bigger cities will likely be different. The job is not for everyone, you have to be able to shrug things off and not take them personally. There can be toxic dispatchers but every job has toxic people. You are obviously dealing with people all the time with problems and if you can’t keep your cool even if you’re being cussed out and insulted then it’s not a job for you.

I'm about to interview with dispatch. I'm pretty sure I'll get the job, as I've been in the Sheriff's department for 5 years on the detention side, I know all the dispatchers and the supervisors, as well as the sheriff, undersheriff, captains, and sgts (on both patrol and detention side). I feel compelled to switch to dispatch because I want to expand my law enforcement and emergency response skills, as well as genuinely help people that don't hate me for wearing a uniform (not all inmates, but many), to be able to work in one of the most important positions within the emergency response spectrum. I'll also be happy not to put a moon suit on and clean feces and blood off cell walls, floors, and ceilings. I also know I'm really good at working under pressure and in emergency situations. I already do shift work. I've got great communication skills. Most of all, I'm already certified in CJIN and use in a detention capacity, so I've got some good experience.

You have to rely on 3rd person information verbally wholly, AND you have to hang up, recover and help the next citizen often immediately. You will definitely learn!!! Let me know how it’s going!!

I know I'm a little late, I was a former CO as well, did it for 3 years. The experience, deescalating techniques, schedule and multitasking skill gained can directly transfer to dispatching. If you were in the control picket or central control, that is invaluable experience. The thing that I'd note is agencies aren't look for someone to cross dispatching off their personal conquer list. Due to the money agencies invest in training new hires, they want to at least get 3-4 years out of you ideally. I've been dispatching for almost 6 years now and love it.

I have been a Call center agent ( shoutout to those that have) for a telephone company . I have worked on holidays. Worked LONG HOURS taking calls. In my case, shift picking is based on what team performs the best. Like sports draft, they get first pick. You can get the rest. If your team's performance sucked, YOU GET THE CRAPPY SCHEDULE THAT NOBODY WANTS. NO QUESTIONS OR VIOLENT REACTIONS. The STRESS of 911 is FAR MORE than my previous job. I DO AUX (CALL AUXILLIARY OR THE THING YOU PRESS ON YOUR DIALER TO BLOCK INCOMING CALL and makes it appear you're busy) just because I was PISSED at the attitude of the customer before. WITH THIS ONE? I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO HANDLE IT. Having let's say a domestic violence call where you were not able to save the victim ( same with suicide), that was a HARD call. I might actually QUIT just having one of those calls. My conscience could not bear it FOR MY LIFETIME ( mind you I am an Atheist). Salute to you 911 dispatchers. My hat's off to you. New Found respect. This is mentally traumatic at most. P.S. preach on the you learn to work under pressure. I mean I received calls from CUSSING CUSTOMERS one of them I laughed at the customer and got scolded by supervisor. I am still hot headed though and uncalm but YOU CANNOT PISS ME just by CUSSING. I AM USED TO IT.

I have a question, I was fired from a sheriff's department (contractor job) had my clearance pulled due to misconduct, would that affect me getting hired? I do intend on being honest. I've never been in trouble, clean record.
@LauraBryant5 жыл бұрын
I am not sure. Depends on the misconduct. However, the Law Enforcement community is small and they talk. Be sure you are being honest and straight forward. They look for integrity

Hi! I'm looking to move to the DFW area and apply to become a 9-11 dispatcher as a precursor to applying to a local police department. It would mean that I'd be in dispatch for less than a year if I were to get hired. I realize you might not know and I realize you might not want to share if you did, but is this kind of move to apply to a PD frowned upon? Did you ever meet someone who did that?

Do you get to sort of mess around with the monitors before you actually take calls? Is it part of training? I’d like to get a feel of the environment and understanding of the system of course before I take calls.

Do you prefer working nights or days?
@LauraBryant6 жыл бұрын
Girl it depends on how I feel that day!! lol... OK... You have different times of day that are "prone" to the same types of calls. For example: during the day people don't typically break into buildings and rob people... it happens during the day some... but a lot of those things happen at night. I enjoyed the "excitement" of working at 3-11...it seemed to make the time go faster. I will do a video on it!! Thanks for asking and thanks for watching!

hey! my sister has been in training for a dispatcher. okay so her trainer is a like a bit special and wants everything perfect. so she’s not able to use the headphones or earphones the trainer doesn’t let her she makes her hear the call on a radio and she could like not hear well and the trainer is like ‘wow you didn’t hear that’ i did. and last friday the trainer told her that dispatching isn’t for her that she needs more help with dispatching and she needs more hearing skills. and i wanted to ask you when you were in training did the same thing happen to you also my sister worked for a city for dispatching.
