It’s really awesome that you aren’t afraid to speak the truth ❤ far too often people are concerned with being politically correct and not offending anyone, and ultimately their refusal to be real about things hurts more than helps. Just like anorexia and heroin abuse should not be glorified, obesity should not either.

Thank you!! I was hesitant to watch this video thinking it was going to be another "fat positive" push. Thank you for your honesty. A few years ago I started medication for fertility. I gained a lot of weight. My life changed for the worse! I also have an autoimmune condition and the weight gain pushed me almost to my de@th!. Currently down more than 50lbs and much healthier. I hate this is being pushed on our young people. Your organs will not last if you're overweight! I should add, that while I lost weight, being FAT for the time that I was. Did permanent damage to my body and my organs. I now take heart medication. I suffered a pre-heart attack and was on the verge of a stroke in June of this year. I wish someone had told me the truth sooner. I was 5'5 250. For 6 years it hurt my body. Imagine being bigger for longer.

Hi Fumi!! Please do a follow up discussion about what’s going on behind the weight. We need to spend more time on why there is an obesity crisis. Please include mental health, history of abuse, trauma and the food industry allowing toxic chemicals to be legal ingredients in our grocery stores and restaurants. So often we make obesity the responsibility of the person, but fail to protect vulnerable individuals and children. Weight is so much more deeper than simply discipline and saying no to sweets.

great topic. my family tries to shop at stores that allow local farmers to bring organic veggies. I've grown tomato plants, herbs, etc. But the food industry does allow, more than we realize, bad ingredients in our foods. Like there is a such thing as food grade lye. We are truly unaware of what's really in food and I feel this is why there is so much cancer going on. I've known to many people just get cancer. I sure its food related

I truly believe this video was done out of concern and came from a good place. However it has missed the mark. We have no idea about the young beauty queen’s health status. She could have a condition or she could be on a health journey right now. We just don’t know. As someone who has been overweight my entire adult life, I can tell you, it is indeed a battle. I don’t know Miss Alabama personally. What I can tell you, is what I have experienced. If I showed you pictures of me as a younger person, you may not even have thought I was obese or that I looked overweight. Most people didn’t know what I weighed at all. But when I had to step on a scale and the scale did not say what was deemed acceptable, I was constantly told I needed to lose weight. It didn’t help that I loved dance and modeling (two industries that were the harshest on those who were not the status quo). So, I carried on, dancing and modeling but always believing that I was less than because I couldn’t look like the other girls no matter how hard I tried. I was always on a weight loss program. But I was “curvy” before being curvy was a thing. Instead, I was never allowed to take ballet pointe classes because I was “a bit too heavy” and pulled aside at my modeling course to be given yet another diet plan. As time went on I let go of those dreams, and focused on other things, but the weight kept creeping up. When I was getting married, I went on birth control and gained 30 pounds in 3 months. Again, my weight became a discussion of “the concerned”. Years later when I had my daughters, I was at my highest weight ever. No matter what I tried, I could never keep the weight off for long before it creeped back up. Then, one day, I saw an advertisement for a pageant for plus sized women. I entered, competed and won! I cannot tell you what that did for my confidence at that time. I went on to do so many things that I had only dreamed of doing. Why? Because I had the audacity to put myself out there despite my size, despite of what people thought of me and despite of what I thought of myself. Im not going to lie, Im still a work in progress. There have been times that I have forgotten that crown as it were. I have gained and lost weight many times over the years. But it has given me empathy for others who are battling too. I will never judge someone else's journey; I know what that feels like. Like I said, I don’t know Miss Alabama, I’m a middle aged black women from an island so I’m sure we are very different lol. But what I do know is that everyone has a story. Good on her for having the audacity to compete despite the naysayers (I’m sure there were and will be many). Im sure this will be a catalyst for even greater things for her and IF it includes changing her dress size, Im sure she will be successful at that too. Always with love ❤.

Only if you are good friends, you can ask if their weight affects them and if they feel like it keeps them from doing anything they want to do. If they say yes, you can offer to start working out with them and meal prepping together!! DO NOT start talking about weight if you are not willing to fully commit to helping them. If you aren't willing to help then it's not your business and don't worry about it. So many "friends" talk about helping but then only want to go out to eat to hang out and don't want to themselves work out. Its easy to put expectations on others you wouldn't do yourself. If she is fine with her size then respect her boundaries and don't worry about it!

Fumi, The topic of obesity needs urgent attention, as it is a major cause of many chronic diseases. At a healthcare conference I attended, I learned that the rate of type 2 diabetes in America has not decreased since 1980; instead, it continues to rise due to our eating habits. Parents must improve their children's nutrition, as many kids today are struggling with high blood pressure. Poor eating habits are the primary issue contributing to obesity, as we tend to become what we eat. I've witnessed individuals who underwent gastrectomy or gastric sleeve surgeries gain back the weight they lost. We need to do better.

This is a public service announcement. So true. My mother talks about why doesn't this generation care about how they look and their health. Glad you didn't feel uncomfortable talking about it. I'm on the opposite end. I have to try to keep weight on. I almost died as a teen and one issue that my doctors had was I was extremely skinny. I was almost 60 pounds at 17. I wasn't a major eater either. I survived by living in the ICU for a couple of months. And I drink a high dosage formula to help me keep on weight. So if you are way below or way over what's normal weight for your age, it is very harmful to your life. It's good to not neglect your health and even your mental health. Great video Fumi.

Since she is only 24, it is possible she has been on the heavier side her whole life. As a result, she is not aware of how much better she will feel if she loses some of the weight because this is all she knows. Also, being so young, youth may be protecting her from some of the more serious health problems that are associated with obesity and that take time to develop. So, like most 20-somethings, she is not thinking about the health ramifications that may occur when she is 'old'. To a 24-year-old, even 35 seems far off into the future.

The sooner we realise that attacking or shaming people for their weight is actually contributing to the issue, the better. I would love to know the family’s relationship with food because to be in your early twenties, and be the size she’s become could mean she doesn’t know what a balance meal is. It’s starts from an early age, exposure to different textures and flavours. It takes (I think) 14 attempts to encourage a child to eat something that’s been introduced to them. There are some parents that find it easier to give up and just give their child what they want. Only for the child to grow up to be a picky eater.

Sister Fumi, I hear what you are saying about the health benefits of losing weight. I started my health journey after having a serious talk with my late older sister who was hospitalized 25 years ago. I had gotten down 60 pounds before she passed away and continued to lose over 100 pounds. However a work injury has caused me to not be able to exercise like I did and the medication for the brain injury caused me to pick up 40 of what I had lost . It has taken years of finding correct meds and getting back out my blues to lose 30 of the 40 I picked up. So I am 80 away from my goal weight. My doctor says 50.😄but I'm an over achiever.❤😂 My only concern with your statement was saying a women like my self or Sarah want a Denzel but he wants a Hallie Berry. There is a lid for every pot.Because my self esteem used to be low I never took handsome men with great godly character serious when they tried to date me. I even tried to run my new fiance off as a friend then as a boyfriend listening to women say why would a handsome man want a big girl like you?

Obesity is certainly not healthy and shouldn’t be celebrated. I also think content glorifying gluttony should be banned. However, I don’t feel it’s right to dedicate content focusing on an individual scolding them because they are obese. What if she was severely underweight and won? Would there also be this strong of a dialogue about how dangerous it is to deprive your body of the calories and nutrients it needs to survive? Are obese people to supposed to hide in shame and be shunned until they are an acceptable weight? Also, this pageant wasn’t the more widely known “Miss America” or Miss USA where the physical fitness of a contestant is considered. The *National American Miss* focuses on confidence, communication, and inner beauty. Does her being obese negate her other attributes that qualified her for the title? Personally, I think this was disrespectful to the young lady and her accomplishment. She’s already received many hateful messages.

She won because the pageant didn't want to get sued and/or canceled. Just saying.

I wish there would be an inbetween in these spaces. Things are super different now from the 80s and 90s which I appreciate, but wow. What about a winner who’s thick and curvy? Something like an off-season bodybuilder (off season meanjng they have the fat on them still, no veins coming out)? Before bodybuilding went to extremes in the 90s, bodybuilders had modeling careers, like Cory Everson. Or even just thicker and curvier…. Different body types…. It’s like they either have to be skinny, or this opposite extreme. There are MANY in-betweens that go ignored and not represented.

If you’ve always been slim but all of a sudden you put on weight without trying, please go and check your thyroid. I went from hypothyroidism with an under active thyroid and put on so much weight I could hardly run , then I went to hyperthyroidism and an overactive thyroid and lost so much weight I nearly died. I’m well now but it could’ve been worse if I didn’t get it checked🙏🏽❤

"Let's face the elephant in the room...no pun intended". I HOLLERED!!! LOL But yes auntie, thank you for keeping it REAL! As someone who has reversed their diabetes (and I was not obese by any stretch) these people celebrating being big won't be there to chip in and pay for the blood pressure meds, the doctor visits, the glucose monitors and monitor sticks, and deal with the silent ravages that obesity can bring. Especially here in the U.S. where half the population is BIG, the madness has to stop-celebrate HEALTH!

Im at 190, so I try to at least dance since I'm not an athletic person but I love video games like Just Dance and dance central. I want to try and at least stay healthy. The only time I would buy junk food is if I go to the movies or i leave the house like going into the city

I'm starting to wonder if by today's standards they gave the crown to her in order to prove something or avoid potential lawsuit being that people could draw the conclusion that or she was discriminated against because of her weight. But as far as I know these type of competitions and modeling industries for example had specific requirements in regards to weight and clothing size and height so that's just the nature of the industry. I also think and agree that it just sends out the wrong message. Frankly it IS BOTH vanity and most importantly health reasons not to become heavy, overweight, or obese.
