This song is SO incredible and one of the best songs ever written. The tight harmonies and passionate lyrics create amazing melodic intricacies that very few songs ever find. The rich timbre of Ken's voice, Drew's harmony and the driving beat during the bridge is total and complete musical genius. I have been a Hazel Nut for over 20 years and every time I hear this song, I fall in love with this extraordinary band all over again. I could listen to this song every day several times and never, ever get tired of it. Absolute musical bliss.

Saw these guys in 2001 ~pre 9/11. They were amazing. They have beautiful lyrics, beautiful voices, Ken has beautiful eyes, and they were all gracious at the meet and greet. I don't know if back then they were considered "Southern Rock, Folk Rock, Jangle Pop", and Alternative. I don't quite understand any of those titles other than Alternative. Might be in some of their other music that sounds folksy, or extremely southern. I've always wondered if 9/11 kind of changed what we listened to at the time, because these guys had a lot of hits out when I got to see them. They should have been huge, but I feel they were truly underrated. So glad to see that they're still around. Thanks for the memories, fellas. :)

I’ve dug this song out so many times over the years. This tune speaks to me like very few songs do. Pretending to be happy for the love of your life marrying another dude is hard, in fact it’s not possible. Human nature tells us to be selfish and want her for yourself. Feelings like this cant be hidden and don’t just go away. “Toast to the future, but that’d be a lie” is a line that perfectly sums up the feeling. You just gotta let it burn.
@Wyopainter8 ай бұрын
Was fortunate enough to see these guys in Casper, Wy in Nov. It was really cool to see how they interacted with their fans. Pictures, singing with fans for cell phone videos and just really involved. It's what it's all about ! Now being in Wyoming its not your 90s crowd or a big crowd. But they still rocked it ! Thank you coming !!!

As highly nostalgic as this song is for me (having loved this song for years and years), this is the first time I've actually seen the music video. I know that the song wasn't exactly the happiest in the world, but to see the wedding/atmosphere in the video be dark and melancholic as opposed to happy and optimistic that the world usually shows us... Dang. I never knew. Awesome stuff. Best band ever.

this song is about a guy who is still in love with his ex-girlfriend, he never thought he would be so deeply in love with her but he is. its her wedding day with someone new hence when he says i never thought it would hurt just to hear i do. and he talks about her love life being complete while his his empty that is also why he says he will smile and go because on the outside he will be happy but on the inside he is hurting. he knows he has lost the girl of his dreams to another man

To me its more about a female friend you had for a long time and at some point you both knew something was there but you never made the move for whatever reason (to busy working, moving to college, didn't want to be tied down, etc). In the case of this song he was focuses on his band (while I'm still gone for the quest for my song). Eventually she moved on and after time and reflection you realize you loved her and she was incredibly special to you then only to find out shes married or getting married now. It's a song about if you truly love something you let them go, and if they are happy you don't let you own personal sadness obstruct it. The reason I am so sure its not about an actual ex is there are lines in the song that that allude to it just being a friendship. eg: "I wasn't looking for a life time with you", "I never thought it would hurt just to hear I do and I do". Then in the second verse it just alludes to time passing a friends growing part as their lives diverge.
@gelgabate8443 жыл бұрын
@@hgbugalou I agree. That line "where will I be when I stop wondering why" it says one thing and that is regret for letting the time pass. However, what can one do when the other one had already moved on and settled down?

Well I'm on a champagne high Where will I be when I stop wondering why On a champagne high I'd toast to the future but that'd be a lie On a champagne high, high Spring turned to summer But then winter turned to mean The distance seemed right At the time it was best - to leave And to leave behind What I once thought was fine And so real - to me And while I'm still gone On the quest for my song I'm at your - celebration And for the million hours that we were Well I'll smile and remember it all Then I'll turn and go While your story's completed mine is a long way from done. Well I'm on a champagne high Where will I be when I stop wondering why On a champagne high I'd toast to the future but that'd be a lie On a champagne high, high Your wagons been hitched to a star Well now he'll be your thing that's new Yeah what little I have you can borrow 'Cause I'm old and I'm blue And for the million hours that we were Well I'll smile and remember it all Then I'll turn and go While your story's completed mine is a long way from done. @allthingsdie777 I think they like their down-to earth status, with a solid, steady fan base. That way they can live normal lives. unlike commercial musicians that rise to stardom and fizzle out, they built their success on a sturdy foundation, and their fans are extremely loyal. their songs are timeless, with 10-15 year old songs still going strong. They'll never have problems getting work or selling albums. And they will always be gaining new fans.
