"1776" was a successful Broadway musical that earned the 1969 Tony Award for Best Musical. It's success would lead its way to Hollywood when Columbia Pictures under the supervision of Jack Warner adapted the critically acclaimed musical for the big screen with much of the original Broadway cast. Released in 1972.

Hamilton is a great musical in its own right but honestly wish more young people saw 1776. Haven't heard of a major touring company doing it in a long time and most people under 25 probably have never seen the motion picture. Should be required viewing at around 5th grade.

Saw it in 5th grade in 2009 and it was incredible. Appreciate both cause they tell the same timeline in their own unique way amd style. 1776 is on top tho.

I remember looking at the album cover in "73, not knowing a thing about it, and wondering what they, composer and librettist, could do with material to make it so successful. So I started to listen...pleasantly surprised with the opening drum line and opening theme band arrangement, them totally smitten and hooked with "Sit Down John". I thought it so creative and unexpectedly funny. I was thinking it all might be something pendantic and honestly boring, but this was anything but...one of my favorite musicals.

This is among a handful of musical I enjoy. The movie plays very fast and loose with the history but I know better than to expect accuracy when watching a movie and is going to invent drama where might not existed in reality. I am just finishing up the John Adams biography by David McCullough and it is true that Adams wanted to included the abolition of slavery (which he and his wife dispised and they never own slaves themselves) in the Declaration of Independence but was voted down and the focus should remain on the seperation from England. In later years Adams and Thomas Jefferson became less friendly. In one section Jefferson gave two families of slaves as a wedding gift. Wasn't that nice of him. Our future Presidents, ladies and gentlemen.

GREG FREEMAN The history is actuallly very accurate, if you read the orginal script. In it, they explain what was accurate, what they THOUGHT was accurate, and what they had to fudge to make the narrative work.
@Delicoms
@Delicoms 8 жыл бұрын
I believe that was Sam Adams and I can't find anywhere saying it was Jefferson that did that. Can you link a source to me? Anyway, John and Thomas repaired their friendship towards the end and their major disagreements were not on slavery but on government policies.
