You can find friends! I don’t have any friends from before I was 20. You just have to keep trying. My best friends were found through anime society and role playing society. Do what you find fun, join a group of that, keep turning up. It’s so lucky that now there are groups for everything. Talk to people even when it’s hard and you’re anxious or feel you are saying everything wrong - even if you don’t click with most people, there will be someone who does share your interests and worldview. There are a lot of lonely people out there who will relate. I even made a friend for life in group therapy when I had severe mental health issue so honestly even when life’s at it’s worst you can find a friend. I still can only count my close friends on the fingers of one hand but you know it’s quantity not quality. Good luck!

Once you know those and yourself, hold to and voice them while developing friendships. If they cross those boundaries, whether intentionally or unintentionally, you will find good friends and people will consistently respect the boundaries of you and others. Untrustworthy people will consistently try to push past, or go right over those limits. Keep the first, cut out the second and you will find and create a good circle of friends. Just remember to play be the same rules and respect others' boundaries too 👌.

A girl in junior high approached me and offered to be my friend if I “helped” her with schoolwork. Of course I said yes. Unfortunately we got caught when I was giving her the answers during a test. During the conference with my mother, the teacher said I was trying to copy, and socially awkward me said “No I wasn’t! I was giving her the answers. The test was easy!” The teacher asked why, and I said it’s because she is my friend and she asked me to. (BTW, I wasn’t ratting her out. The teacher thought she was letting me copy. We were both already in trouble.) The teacher informed me that she wasn’t really my friend, that she was just using me. I told him I already knew that. He asked why I was willing to do it if I knew she was using me. My response “she is my only friend.” What did I learn from that? Honestly, how to cheat better, and to approach other kids who were struggling and offer to “help” them if they would be my friend. Did those friendships last? No. But it was better than nothing, which is what I usually had.

We need friends to take us out of our comfort zone. I have some friends who are very party people, some grounded friends, a guy friend that is learning Japanese and we shared interests, his wife is also an Engineer like us and she's a dear friend whom I've been teaching to crochet in coffee shops, I also have a nerdy "outcast" friend whom I convince to go out to restaurants and roam the streets of our city, my sister is a whole 'nother type of friend, etc. They're all different, sometimes I do what some friends want, sometimes they do what I come up with. It's a balance and important to learn to help others be happy in their activities by being with them but also making sure you're happy because friends accompany and participate in your desired activities. Keeping in mind that there's no one single person that can be your 100% same likes, dislikes, time, energy, etc. When you find that balance, it's amazing how many friends you actually have because each of them is a part of your life in their own special way 👍🏻

Kind of reminds me of one of my previous relationships. My ex complained one day about always having to pick the restaurant himself whenever we went out to eat and said I should be more assertive. I pointed out that he never wanted to go to the places I suggested. He's like, "That's not true! Just pick a place to eat this time, and we'll go there." I think it’s totally healthy to have friends that push your boundaries. Like for example, all through highschool I was kinda a shut in. My introverted friend also...kinda forces me (well its still my choice but its the same scenario still) I love to go out with a huge group of friends at least 10 people, she likes to only be me and her or her and just 1 of her friends, not even 3, and I respect her so I accepted but it really hurt me every time we go out, I just feel extremely sad, also I speak to literally everyone but she said it makes her angry how people come up and talk to me so for years she thought I was annoying, but now that I've been isolating myself she told me that she just didn't like how many people there were every time we were together, so I guess she also took it upon herself while being friends, hm...I really love my introverted friends but I need more extroverted people in my life srsly, introverts seem to really love me though and even their parents don't recognise them when they're with me, they seem much more sociable apparently, and you can hear them talk for hours and just laugh so much so I guess I'm happy to be a safe space to them; still I also need my own safe space and it is to hang out with the whole world one day ahaha!!
